@Steven-Orkin The best way to find the answer this is to download the 17 trial and find out for yourself. Not everyone's experience is the same.

Better to find out for yourself. I have e.g. the (bundled) Ignite Pro 4.1.* available in VP 15, 16, 17, and VMSP 17 (at least).

wwjd wrote on 5/28/2020, 6:44 AM

assume anything that came with vegas will fail, anything outside from vegas, or freeware works fine

vkmast wrote on 5/28/2020, 7:48 AM

No need to assume.

can't assume this. Most bundles only work with the version they're bundled with. so, even though the extras "came with VP" they only work with a specific version.

kinda weird they are even "PLUG-IN"s, isn't it? defeats the purpose

I've come to the conclusion that the 'extras' that are mostly node-locked to the VP version that they ship with are really marketing teasers in the hope that the VP purchaser will like the 3rd party sample package so much that they will buy the full version from the 3rd party. Yes, you'll pay more for the extras with VP, but nowhere near the retail price of the extra that you'd pay by buying it directly from the 3rd party company. Go back 15 years or so and products like mini-dv cameras as well as some software products would be accompanied by a free SE or LE version of a software product like a consumer NLE or other, though, to be fair, there was often an attractive upgrade price to move from the SE/LE version to the full retail version - not something that happens so much today with the extras.

Agreed, but I feel it should be mentioned loudly upfront. I know it won't change, but I have made Vegas purchase decisions in the past wrongly assuming these extras, these PLUGINS worked like any other plugin on Earth: in anything that accepts those types of plugins. I have since learned, having been bitten, to stop doing that. Is PLUGIN extra a "normal PLUGIN"? No. I could even see them locked ONLY to Vegas, but extra time wasted coding them to lock to specfic version?? meh

The plugins from Boris have been the ones that were difficult to transfer. When getting a new version of VP with Boris, it usually wipes out any previous Boris plugin, whether it's the same plugin or not.

I've finally bought Continuum 2020 (I can update to 2021) perpetual for a greatly discounted price so no longer have to worry about it and get many more plugins "forever".

With Sapphire, I still have what came with VP15 working in VP17. I installed VP17 Sapphire first, then reinstall VP15 Sapphire (not installing the entire Sapphire suite) and now have it in VP17. And the thing is, those "old" Sapphire plugins now have Mocha.

The NewBlue FX seem to have no problem going version to version.

@michael-harrison  ... BorisFX recently had a 25% off sale for single products and 50% off for bundles - I believe that the offer has now expired (it's no longer offered on their website). They usually have a similar offer around Black Friday though of course there's no guarantee that this will occur this year.

I should add that the comment that 'many more plugins forever' does seem out of odds with BorisFX's Ts&Cs in that it is a sort of subscription arrangement when you purchase, say, BorisFX's BCC, you get updates for 12 months, but after 12 months, you need to re-subscribe for a cost in order to get any further updates. If you don't re-subscribe, the version you have continues to be useable but without any later updates.

@Dexcon when I purchased Boris Continuum, it is a perpetual license that never expires. Updates are good for me personally up to and including the release of 2021. Pretty good I think.

I have the complete version with every Continuum plugin, not just 3D Objects. Unless there is something really compelling that would require me updating my license to get the updates past 2021, I am quite content to keep what I have for a long time. It's like Vegas. You want the latest version, you have to update it (pay), or just keep what you have and use it forever.

@michael-harrison I emailed BorisFX with a problem I was having. They looked over what I already had, and then offered me a great GREAT deal to upgrade to Continuum complete. It was a "no brainer" for me.

No more juggling BorisFX with previous versions vs newest version offered with an update for later version of Vegas. This version I have works with VP14, 15, 16, and 17.
