Possible upgrades?

Tommygun54 wrote on 8/29/2023, 7:25 AM

I currently run Vegas 16 and have no problems on my pc. I attempted to upgrade to Vegas 20 but my system won’t run it (I believe it has to do with my processor [+]. I have found a copy of Vegas 18 Pro suite and was wondering if I will run into the same problems? Does anyone know when the Magix minimum specs changed? I’m at the tipping point and need some GOOD and simple advice! I hope someone can help! - Tom

Recommended minimum specs for Vegas Pro progressively change over releases - but I think that Vegas Pro 19 and 20 had much the same recommended specs.

I have found a copy of Vegas 18 Pro suite

Is this a private sale (e.g. via eBay or other)? Vegas 18 Pro Suite suggests that it is Vegas Pro 18 POST with additonal apps such as Vegas Effects and Vegas Image - usually, POST hasn't been on sale via MAGIX partner websites such as Amazon or Humble Bundle.

With the above in mind, be wary about getting a pirated/cracked version of Vegas Pro which - from reports over the years on the forum - ends up with cracked serial numbers that are repeatedly sold but don't work because that serial number has already been registered.

BTW, what exactly are the specs of your computer?

Minimum specs are basically the same from 18 through 21.

While CPU may be more of a guideline (it'll work but be slow), older GPUs won't be able to do key functions.

Can you elaborate on why 20 wouldn't run? What happened when you installed it?

While the CPU is old it should still install and the GPU is supported.

Thank you for the information.

Intel Core i7-3770K is over 11 years old since its release in Q2 2012. You will be struggling to get any performance improvement with VP 18 (or later) - if any - over that you are now getting in VP16.

If you are happy with with Vegas Pro 16, stick with it. But if you want to move on to a later version, a new modern computer would need to be on your shopping list.

It seems to me that I could be right on the boarder of it working or not. 20 installed but would crash upon trying to create a new project or load a project. Over and over. 16 loads super-fast (by comparison to the same pc in the past but without my processor and ram upgrade). My Pro 16 no longer has ANY plug ins to speak of and I can’t afford a new pc. I’ve got mine going as fast as I can with my budget and limited tech knowledge. I just need some decent VFX plugins like GOOD chromakeying, tracking, masks, and general VFX add-ins! The only way (it seems) to get things like these plug ins is to get new software. Then who knows how long these plug ins will last or if they will work at all! I’m getting SO frustrated at having lost dozens and dozens of plug ins I used to REALLY get on with! I can’t afford the newest pc, the newest software or the EXTRAORDINARILY priced plug ins sold by Boris, New Blue etc etc. It feels like creative handcuffs!

I am running V20 on two computers below with no problems. I only do 1920 x 1080 resolution projects and have crashed only once or twice. Here are the specs of my computers.
i5 4590, 24g memory, Nvidia GEforce GT730 & Intel Graphics 4600, all SSD drives

i5 12600, 16g memory, Nvidia GEforce GT730 & Intel Graphics 770, mix of spinning and NVME drives, Blackmagic Intensity Pro capture card

Both preview at full frame rate at Best Full resolution. Obviously it would be best to use the latest greatest CPUs and GPUs, but I get by fine.

I'm currently running an i5 3rd gen 3570K CPU and run V21 with Sony XAVCS at 4K Best full and it runs all the AI stuff and renders a 1min clip at about 1min 15sec (depending on the FX if any). It will run slow when using neat video to reduce noise but I do not use that much. So the i7 is certainly doable. I intend to build a new PC later this year but this is mainly for gaming not Vegas, although Vegas will benefit.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

Ok, so THAT’S interesting. Hmmm, as clear as a muddy lake! HOO boy! What to do?

Consider the trial of VP 21 and if it works acceptably the Pro Suite has many of the plugins you seem to want to use.

I’m just concerned because “20” failed so miserably that “21” is likely to create ANOTHER series of questions. And the cost is so high. I don’t “do” subscriptions as they always run out when you need them and it’s a waste of funds when one ISN’T using it. Just imho.

RogerS wrote on 8/29/2023, 11:03 AM

20 isn't sold anymore. 21 is not subscription only. If the trial fails stick with what you have and pay for the plugins you need the most? With a license you can use them for years.
