Preview is lagging/choppy - can't effectively edit videos

I'm using Sony Vegas Platimun 17. Preview is very choppy, even with rendering set to 'best', making editing virtually impossible. Might be my computer isn't up to the task, but I've found different system requirements in different places, so I'm not sure. I'm using a 2020 Lenovo IdeaPad running Windows 10. This is vital to my new career. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Preview has nothing to do with rendering and Vegas is not a video player but a program to edit and export videofiles.

Please note that you are most likely using VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum. (Sony is not involved.)

Please allow me to clarify. I misspoke when I said 'rendering' was set to best. I meant to say preview quality. I am fully aware the purpose of the program is video creation and editing. I was also mistaken when I said Sony. I used Sony Vegas Pro 13 on my old computer, but see the product is now published by Magix. I apologise for any confusion. The problem remains, however, that the preview lags and skips.

If your used hardware meets the needs for this program it depends mostly on the used sourcefiles and the settings in the program, which you did not tell.
