Printing DVD Covers

Tell me I'm wrong, - but I'm unable to find any feature in DVD Architect Studio v5 that allows me to priint a simple cover (on a paper sleeve, for example) which contains the "contents" that I've just burnt. . .so there can be no mistake as to what I'm giving (eg friends).

There are Win programs on every PC (like WordPad), I'd have thought it would be easy enough to export a suitable file (maybe I select the font and size, etc) and I get to print out a sheet that gives
1) The DVD (or Blue Ray) disc Title as I've previously set, and
2) Contents, same order as the Menu.

Maybe an Option would be to print the % space used and the date. below
A further option would be to add notes/comments to "personalise" the sheet so I can make a note of who has been sent which, etc.

I really don't need "Themes" nor do I want play-along music* (but they are there I believe)....I put the Disc into the player and select the content from the Menu.

But it would be nice to be able to attach a printed sheet.

As a Bonus, perhaps we could have a Runniing sheet that collect all the Discs, so I can know what I was burning last year as well. This need not be printed every time, but would make a useful "index"

Why can't this (text) data be made available to me?

- or does someone know a ruse that achieves this . . . other than doing it with a pen, (which is what I do), but I don't see why this feature shouldn't be included. That's what computers are good at, or - should be.
BTW I sometimes need to print-off away from the Video-Computer, so can I please export the "Word-Pad" file to a flash-memory, or similar.

As a really "techy" bonus, perhpas I can use my Aunt's Ink, and include the file on the DVD itself . . . . in the DVD/BD Menu a Printer-file that says "Print the Menu"
Note to Sony:
- If you do this and want to add "Pictures/Themes" bear in mind that Computer Ink is very expensive....so lets have any graphic at about 20% depth only...making the Text very clear, in black against the pale picture (for example), although I'd prefer plain - as I can add a picture myself...this could be achieved by making the graphic low res. (perhaps?).

* included on the -disc I understand.

Well, DVD Architect is a DVD and BluRay authoring app. Not a print app.

For what it's worth, Photoshop Elements does include templates for creating DVD and CD covers and labels.

Thanks, I'm aware of DVDAS purpose, what I'm suggesting is that for very little effort Sony could provide a file that would be the basis of any printing program But as Wordpad is free, why not use it?

You have a good graphics program, good for you, - but where do you get the list of contents? - do tell, - - - or are you having to type it out? . . . . surely we should expect out computers to do the hard work?

While waiting for that file to happen, you could take advantage of Win7 Snipping Tool.

And burn with the free ImgBurn, it gives you the logs. Many of us use it anyway instead of DVDA burning.

If your DVD has many chapters and these chapters were set by markers from Vegas, you can use something like Vegasaur to export the markers as a list from Vegas.

Personally, I am so glad to get to the end of my video editing that I don't mind an hour or two of something different, like authoring and cover design.

Peter,

Have you created your own template for printing the sleeve (as I have in Paint Shop Pro) or have you acquired a pre-made template from another source? If so, can you say who from please?

For CDs I have two basic designs: for a single disc and for a pair of discs. I haven't created templates - I take the lazy way out and just modify a previous version. The back is the contents only. The whole sleeve is a Word document with a three column table for the two edges and the back. (Column widths 7, 138, 7 mm. Column height 118 mm.) I nest the contents table in the back (middle) column.

For DVDs, the back is usually a photo with overlaid text. I use PhotoPaint because I have had it for many years and is therefore easier for me to use than PhotoShop. I select a photo and trim or resize it to 138x118 mm with 300 DPI resolution. I then resize the paper to 152x118 mm (photo placed centrally) with usually white background for the edge labels. I then add text and print the result.

In the early days of burning CDs and DVDS I did use cover design software, but there were thousands to choose from and I gave up looking for one that suited me.

http://www.acoustica.com/cd-label-maker/

This is very good software for printing direct to disk, making labels, jewel cases, etc. It is very cheap and has set ups for most printers and labels.

I must give it a try.

For label printing I use CD-LabelPrint, which came with my Canon printer. (That printer was not available with disc-printing in the US due to patent held by Epson.)

Been using Acoustica for quite a while as well. Well worth a look. I switched to it from CD-LabelPrint.

By the way (you probably already noticed), I use CD cases for my DVDs. I almost never make DVDs for other people.

Nowadays I rarely make a DVD, since I now make BDs, also in CD jewel case. However, most projects actually end up as BD .ISO files on a hard disc, for playback with my network media player.

Thank you Peter and Dave. Think I might give Acoustica a try sometime.

I've used it for years and find it very good.

I´ve been using "Surething labeler" for covers: http://www.surething.com/
for a long time (hundred of different covers).
It's very handy to work with and I get decent covers printed with a colorlaser.

I don´t do disclabels - I print directly to disc with "CD labelprint" a program that came with my Canon printer.
Its not so sofisticated but very useful.

All of this is interesting and informative as always, here.

However, it seems to me that there is no mechanism for DVDAS to create a tiny wee file that I can use in Wordpad . . . , I just wonder why with DVDAS at v5. no-one has noticed this omission?

Oddly Sony is able to print out the Box its delivered in - yet somehow doesn't think we want something similar.
Come-on Sony, all it needs is the Will - the data is already there.

I liked the option of using the "Sniping tool" but heck, that's pretty crude.
Being a fairly slow person I make a second copy after Burning (just in case) but when I close DVDAS it ask if I want to save...(something) ?. . . so I say "No" - I wonder what it is that I'm missing?
On my C-drive I found dozens of "untitled" files tagged DVDAS . .. could these be the "No" files? . . . . and more importantly, why are they there . . . .taking up space if by being "untitled" it's unlikely I can find anythinig useful.

Come-on Sony, let's have TEXT file for covers and a Master Indexinig:

Here's how..... when the Burn Successful msg appears after Do you want to burn another disc......add "Do you want to save the text contents?" Y/N. if Y: two options
appear: 1) Text only....this will be a "wordpad" file (title/location)
2) Do you want to add this text to a running Index? Y/N. if Y: two further options appear
a) by date (filename/location) - b) by title (filename/Location)

In all cases:-
+ the filename and location are set by the user and ideally will show as a list, so we can be sure we've got the right list. Note that a separate "save" would also make sense, onto a USB flash memory, so it could be given to a Publishing Company.
+ the options are not "exclusive" you can save the text by date (so March burnings follow February - but you can alter the date as might be necessary . . . . as well as the Index - where you can provide a title for a group of files . . . . these might be "Summer-Holiday" for example.

For Vegas Pro, I'd suggest there are further Options, since some of these discs will be Client-specific, so you might (lucky, eh?) be working for Ford and want to keep the factory-visits together e.g. Chicago, Milan, etc.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .All i'm suggestiing is text-files . . . . .

- - - - If I can find it, I'll add "Text, please" to the Product Suggestions - - -

+1 for PeterDuke's Personally, I am so glad to get to the end of my video editing that I don't mind an hour or two of something different, like authoring and cover design.

I do find the Win7 Snipping tool rather useful, the 'sniping tool' is used in connection with eBay I believe and maybe somewhere else.

The patent must have expired (or other legal ruling) because newer model Canons now have direct to disc printing capabilities in the US. After using Epsons to print my dics, I converted to Canon a while back and bought one from Canada just to get the disc printing capability.

harrie, I guess you bring up a good point but I'm never missed this capability in DVDAS.

Here's the template I use to print my JVC (TY) Watershield discs from Photoshop Elements:

Here's the DVD booklet template I use for the inside cover:

I print them two sided on HP Glossy Brochure paper and cut them down to size and insert them on the inside of the DVD case. I use the same paper to print the case (cover) insert.

Downloaded Acoustica as it sounded interesting. Shouldn't be too disappointed I 'spose at the price, but you need shades on to look at most of the designs. Nothing there that you can't knock up pretty quickly in Canon's own software. The promise of Jewel case designs drew me at first, but there doesn't seem to be any for 'King' size jewels, which is what I use.
Former user wrote on 2/17/2013, 6:48 AM
Acoustica has a large number of preset templates, but I don't know about King size jewels. My HP did not have a good software package for printing and acoustica lined up the print perfectly with the direct to DVD printer. It also aligns with the DVD Labels that I buy. I don't use their designs much, but the Text tool works well.

I had a program for printing dvd cover sleeves at one time and I think they are no longer around. The program was simple to use. And I have not been able to find another software program. I just want to be able to print a simple cover sleeve for either a slim dvd case or a full size. and can not find a template or software program. I can find ones for the jewel case but not the full size dvd case?
MSmart wrote on 3/1/2013, 11:17 PM
bab, what photo editing software do you use? Here is a PSD (Photoshop) template that should get you started:

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?szuhshux1m0vb3j

Use the borderless option in your printer settings so the spline markers will line up. The marker on the left may have to be adjusted if you want edge to edge printing.

You should be able to find lots of templates by doing a "dvd case insert" web search.

It really doesn't take too much time to roll your own cover in Word and/or your favourite image editor, as I outlined in my second post above, unless you want a really fancy design.

Sorry, I am a little late to the game on this but here's what I used to do:

I ordered DVD printable inserts on supermediastore.com (where I buy my Taiyo Yuden DVDs) and I used a free progam called "Media Face". This is a real basic one that is good for basic DVD inserts and the inserts supermedia stores sells are properly formated and have perforations that tear off after printing so they fit perfectly in the DVD case sleeves.

These days I am just geting inkjet printable DVDs and printing directly to the labels and putting them in clamshell covers - you can buy 200 clamshells for less than $40 on supermediastore.
