Problematic driver version

KenB wrote on 8/4/2020, 5:38 AM

When I tried VP 18 "Check for Driver Updates", it shows next to my current Intel driver "problematic driver version". So I downloaded and installed the recommended driver (which appeared to be the same Intel version), rebooted, and it made no difference.

While both drivers end in the same last 4 digits they are not the same version number so you haven't yet upgraded.

Go to control panel, device manager, find the Intel card and uninstall the drivers. Then try installing the new driver again.

@RogerS, nup, same result. I think the problem is that my Intel graphics (4600 - I have i7 4th gen CPU) is too old and unsupported, and the latest driver for it is the one I have installed (15.40.45.5126 date 25-Mar-2020). But the supported Intel graphics (HD 530 or later) has a later driver version (27.20.100.8476 date 28-Jul-2020).

But if my Intel GPU is unsupported, I wonder why VP 18 selects it (Intel QSV) as the preferred (Auto) decoder in the Preferences File I/O tab?

Vegas Pro 18.0 (Build 284)
OS: Windows 10 Pro 2004
CPU: Intel Core (4th gen) i7-4790 @ 3.60GHz (HD Graphics 4600 - driver 15.40.46.5144)
Memory: 32GB DDR3
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660 SUPER - driver 452.06
Monitor: 1920x1080x32

In my view you should disable the Intel graphics (I have done this on my PC and only use the 1080Ti card), avoids all sorts of conflict.

Hi Ken, what do you mean same result? That you were unable to install it?

If it doesn't install, I think the issue is you have an OEM driver installed that Intel refuses to install over? I had that issue with my Dell laptop and it took a bit of effort to fully remove the OEM (Dell) driver so that the Intel generic one would install. Perhaps do a search for that with your system.

This is the HD-4600 from Intel and they are recommending the same March 2020 driver that Vegas is:

Your problematic driver according to the screenshot above is older: 20.19.15.5126

Please share a new screenshot of the drivers to confirm what version you're on.

In general Magix has indicated that Intel decoding is the most mature and works with more file types, which is why it defaults to that.

However if you have a known bad driver (though you shouldn't if you can get to the March one) I think the advice to disable makes sense!

@KenB: The main problem here is that the Intel GPU on your machine is not supported by VEGAS.

KenB wrote on 8/4/2020, 8:18 AM

@RogerS, I did install the March 2020 driver. See here two screenshots from the installer process:

My basic problem, as VEGASDerek has confirmed, is that my Intel GPU is not supported.

RogerS wrote on 8/4/2020, 8:43 AM

I'm glad you were able to get the install to work with the newer driver. Too bad the GPU isn't supported by Magix- I hope they can update the language from "problematic driver version" to "unsupported GPU" to reduce confusion (assuming that it doesn't say that already).

The question you raised as to why a problematic one is the default is a good one! Hopefully the criteria for the default will be done more intelligently in the future.

It is "Unsupported driver" in Preferences > Video.

RogerS wrote on 8/4/2020, 9:47 AM

That's not clear though as it implies the problem is the driver, rather than the GPU itself.

Yes... the Intel HD 4600 is a little bit old and not well supported. The driver is using 'OpenCL Neo' with a lot of crashes in VEGAS... so we will give the hint... If it is possible please update. This is one of the reasons every moderator or supporter will asked you "Do you have the latest drivers for your GPU?"

RogerS wrote on 8/5/2020, 2:55 AM

I'm not so familiar with integrated graphics, so I looked it up and the the HD 4600 came out with Haswell in 2013, so it is old. As noted, Vegas Pro specs page lists the min. now as the 530 series which appears to start with Skylake in 2015. That tracks with the NVIDIA 9XX cards which also start circa 2015, so Vegas Pro 18 GPU support seems intended for computers 5 years old or newer.
