I also started by purchasing Vegas Video 2 and really started using it heavily with Vegas Video 3. I came from Digital Origin EditDV but left it fully for Vegas Video 3 after it changed it's name to Cinestream and went through three owners within one year. But let's look at Vegas and get the ownership correct...

Sonic Foundry

  • Vegas 1.0 (audio only) July - 1999
  • Vegas 2.0 (added video) June - 2000
  • Vegas 3.0 around December - 2001
  • Vegas 4.0 April - 2003 - This version added Scripting as a way to expand Vegas as the developers at that time thought this might be the last Vegas version.

Sony

  • Purchased the product line in the summer of 2003 and did release a final version 4.0 with a name change from "Sonic Foundry" to "Sony".
  • Vegas 5 April - 2004 (NAB)
  • Vegas 6 April 2005 (NAB)
  • Vegas 7 September 2006 (IBC)
  • Vegas 8 September 2007 (IBC) This version added 64-bit support
  • Vegas 9 April 2009 (NAB)
  • Vegas 10 October 2011 (just after IBC) This version added OFX plugin support
  • Vegas 11 September 2011 (IBC)
  • Vegas 12 September 2012 (IBC)
  • Vegas 13 April 2014 (NAB)

Magix

  • Purchased the product line in May of 2016 and did release one final version 13 with a name change from "Sony" to "Magix/Vegas Creative Software"
  • VEGAS Pro 14 September 2016
  • VEGAS Pro 15 August 2017
  • VEGAS Pro 16 August 2018
  • VEGAS Pro 17 August 2019
  • VEGAS Pro 18 August 2020
  • VEGAS Pro 19 August 2021
  • VEGAS Pro 20 August 2022

I do wonder if the intent for VEGAS Pro was to be released yearly to the specific year, like as follows:

  • VEGAS Pro 14 — September 2014
  • VEGAS Pro 15 — August 2015
  • VEGAS Pro 16 — August 2016
  • VEGAS Pro 17 — August 2017
  • VEGAS Pro 18 — August 2018
  • VEGAS Pro 19 — August 2019
  • VEGAS Pro 20 — August 2020

Which means, this year, in 2023 and the last two, they would be up to…

  • VEGAS Pro 21 — August 2021
  • VEGAS Pro 22 — August 2022
  • VEGAS Pro 23 — August 2023

Or, if we go off the possibility of the different update model MAGIX and the VEGAS Team might do, we might be looking at the following:

  • VEGAS Pro 20 (Continuous Development) — August 2021
  • VEGAS Pro 20 (Continuous Development) — August 2022
  • VEGAS Pro 20 (Continuous Development) — August 2023

But they now seem to be up to 2 years behind that. This has just been something I have thought about.

Nevertheless, that means that the VEGAS software product line will have been in production 24 years this year.

I am now also wondering, if MAGIX/VEGAS are going with the continuous development update model, if perhaps they would drop the number from VEGAS Pro and just call it, quite simply…

  • VEGAS Pro — August 2023

With the build number in the bottom left, middle, or right of the splash screen as the software is loading up to open for the user. Who knows what we’ll see. I am yet to purchase VEGAS Pro 20. I’m thinking towards upgrading from my VEGAS Pro 18. I went from VEGAS Pro 15 Edit (which just has VEGAS Pro, as I completely understand, and nothing else), when I bought my first copy of VEGAS Pro for myself, then I upgraded to VEGAS Pro 18, and now I’m seriously considering VEGAS Post 20 this year in 2023, as I know I’d use a lot of the extra software available.

That's due to the former owner of the software. After MAGIX bought the software in May 2016 their VEGAS (Creative Software) dev team has managed to produce/release new numbered versions yearly.

We'll see what happens in the future. Until the VEGAS team (or MAGIX) confirms any new policy it's all speculation.

Just to clarify, despite how it may seem, I am not criticising anyone. It was purely just an observation of mine. 🙂

That’s true. We will have to wait and see.
