Should I Upgrade?

OhMyGosh wrote on 5/16/2019, 2:08 PM

I currently have Vegas Pro 14 build 211. Keep getting offers to upgrade to 16, but not sure if it's a stable platform. Money isn't so much of a factor, but when I upgraded to VMSP 16 it won't even run and I don't want to get into that situation again. Any experience or advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cin

What is it that you want to have or do more than in VMS PL 16?

Test the demo version.

Good question j-v. First of all, I don't really have VMSP16 as it literally freezes up every 30 to 60 seconds (it's completely unusable), so I only have VMSP12. I was hoping by going to Pro16 I could do masking, motion tracking, special effects, and more rendering options. Currently I do most of that in After Effects and then import. Yes, I could just stay with Pro 14, but I guess I'm always looking for something better.  :)

Thank you as well Marco, that's a good idea. I wish I would have thought about that before I upgraded to VMSP16! I will take your advice if you don't think it will mess up my upgrade offer. Thank you both. Cin

All those options are available in VMS 16 Pl, see the next screenshot

But if your hardware cannot handle VMS 16 properly it is nonsense to use or try VPro 16

That would depend on if there was a bug in an earlier version, maybe they don't have the newest release of VMS... I'd test Vegas Pro 16 with the demo.

The first official version came out the same day as the first update build 109

I switched from VP13 to VP15 and liked UI changes and better performance. Have found some new plugins (Color Match for example) are quite useful sometimes. I'm still on VP15 as I have not found anything that is really important for me in VP16.

Not sure if you need to upgrade to VP16 (it depend on your needs). There is humble bundle offer where you can get VP15 edit for $25. It would be big step forward from VMS.
Also, I believe, your VMS issues can be fixed.

I am inclined to agree. I've suggested in a MS forum thread of his to try VMS Platinum 15 to see if that would work for him. The system requirements there are lower than in VMSP 16.

The first official version came out the same day as the first update build 109

True, though I've seen someone reporting elsewhere getting build 89 with the Disc version.

I downloaded the trial of VegasPro16 as suggested and have been playing with it for the last hour. Don't want to jinx myself, but it's been running flawless. VMSP16 would have crashed at least a dozen times by now! Not really sure what the difference could be. Is there such a thing as a 'bad download'? Since I paid for it, should I delete it and reinstall VMSP16 to see if that's the problem? Thanks. Cin

Not immediatly needed.
First you can try a full reset following this post: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/
Works the same for VMS.
If it does not help, you can do a reïnstall, but do it carefully after a good uninstall following this faq: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-do-a-clean-uninstall-of-vegas-pro--111205/

Wow j-v, you may be onto something here! I reset it and I've been working with it for ten minutes adding every transition and effect and no crash yet! Although my computer sounds like a vacuum cleaner from the load! I'll keep messing with it today, but it will take quite a while before I will trust it after all the crashes. It was literally unusable. Thank you. Cin

@OhMyGosh wouldn't be the first time that resetting helped when the software was behaving strangely. Keep us posted on this.
