Sony Vegas suddenly can't open files?

Whenever I try to drop/import an mp4 or mp3 into Sony Vegas Studio HD Platinum 11 , it says "None of the files dropped on Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum could be opened". I'v read a few articles saying I need to change the file's format but that just doesn't make sense to me because doesn't Sony Vegas support mp4 and mp3 formats? Furthermore, these clips worked before then suddenly today Sony Vegas can't open them? Are there other solutions to this problem?

What has changed since the files worked?

I downloaded Sound Forge Studio (it came with the "Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Suite". I got the products a long time ago, but only decided to download Sound Forge recently. The program did not work (sorry I forgot what the error message was) so I re-installed it, still did not work so I uninstalled it. Then I downloaded Audacity. That program also does not work. And now surprise surprise, Vegas Movie Studio also does not work. Nothing else really happened. I hope I didn't download a virus from Sound Forge or Audacity, they seem to be trust worthy programs.
Although I would like to point out that everything else on my computer seems to work including Adobe After Effects.
