SPEEDY EDIT with the right mouse button

pierre-k wrote on 11/10/2016, 3:20 PM

Please edit accelerate already in this version of Sony Vegas 14th.

Pushing the right mouse button select samples. Left mouse button samples are moving. This function shall be automatic. It's fast simple and efficient. This feature I discovered in Cockos Reaper, which has the same controls as Vegas. This feature is missing but Vegas.

Please add this feature.

Sorry my English.

Good idea. I also would prefer the right mouse button to do the Selection Edit Tool instead of setting the Loop Region.

There script, which sets it? For stable versions 12 and 13?

Isn't the Selection Edit Tool button on the Toolbar (<v13) / Timeline Toolbar(v13) good/close enough or has it been dropped from MAGIX VEGAS Pro 14?

NickHope wrote on 11/11/2016, 5:36 AM

Selection Edit Tool is still there on the toolbar in VP14 but having the right mouse button do it would be great for saving clicks. Unfortunately I don't think it's scriptable.

Try Cockos Reaper. Work is faster. You do not have to toggle the Menu icon in Tooblar.

Thanks for the suggestion, which will be considered for the future. For now though, remember that you can press the D key to quickly toggle through the tools. I don't have VEGAS Pro on this machine, so I'm going by memory, but I think if you press D twice you get to the Selection Edit tool (someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.) Press it twice more (or press Ctrl+D) to get back to Normal Edit. I know it's not what you're asking for exactly, but it's faster than activating the Selection Edit tool with the mouse.

+1 on a feature like this.

Once in a future version ??? So another year of waiting??? Please add now in Vegas 14 right mouse button, scripting. Anyone can freely choose the function you chce.A in the next version V15 to add my idea. Thanks.

Please add now in Vegas 14

Ha; I really do appreciate your passion, pierre-k! Believe me, there are about a milliion things I'd like to do "right now." It's my job to prioritize those million things and I'm glad to have input like this to help me make difficult decisions.

Lets discuss one more time the future simplifications of some common actions.

Speedy edit is what stics me to Vegas since the Sonic foundry times...

So mine 1-2-3 wishlist for Magix:

1.Right click select button must be 100 times worthy then the right click loop selection.

2.The same neat, but still most wanted feature : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/temporarily-ignore-event-grouping-in-order-to-drag-new-feature-please--103382/#ca640775

3.The one key shortcut to Event Properties.

Thanks.

Here's a case were the robust existing VEGAS Pro behavior limits us. There are simply not a lot of unused key combinations left in VEGAS Pro. Let me address two issues you're asking about:

  1. Use the right mouse button to drag across and select multiple events
    1. Right-mouse-drag is already taken. When you drag an event with the right mouse button, you get a context menu upon button release. We'd have to kill the existing functionality to do what you're asking for, which naturally would irritate all the users who utilize the current function
    2. What you can already do is hold the Shift key as you drag across multiple events (with the left button.) If you hold the Shift key and drag across one event, it appears that nothing happens, but you've actually initiated a multiple-event selection. Keep holding the Shift key and continue to drag out of the event you started with and into any other events on the timeline. Every event you drag over is added to the selection. So, it's not using the right mouse button as you asked for, but it does do exactly what you want--you just need to hold a modifier to do it.
  2. Hold the Shift key to temporarily overide grouping as you move an event
    1. As discussed in the second sub-bullet point above, Shift+drag is already assigned to the multiple event selection function, so it can't be used for this
    2. One thought is to do what we currently do if you first press and hold the Shift key, then click and drag, but to do what you want if you start dragging first and then press and hold the Shift key. But that's the procedure we use for temporarily ignoring snapping, so that's not available to us either
    3. Thus we would have to find a different key combination (maybe Shift+Ctrl), but
      1. That's already used for making a time selection (if you first hold the key combination and then do the drag), so we'd have to do it only if you start the drag and then press the key modifier combination
      2. If we assign this start the drag and then press the modifier, that might work (we have to research it more to be sure), but then the group override for moving is different than the existing group override for edge trimming which is not the end of the world, but does harm app consistency a bit

So, I guess the point to all of this is that, sure, these things seem "easy," and we probably seem silly or like we must not care about what you want because we haven't implemented these "simple things" yet. But the reality of the code and the way VEGAS is already stuffed with all of this amazing functionality makes the implementation trickier than you probably think it is at first blush. It's not that we don't want to do exactly what you're asking for, but sometimes we can't do it without breaking existing functionality. And doing that, I guarantee, will make other users scream at us for "ruining" their favorite feature.

Hopefully you can see that in VEGAS, no changes are as simple as they seem. We've already squeezed so much out of the keyboard combinations and right mousing that it becomes difficult to find a shortcut that isn't already used. We'll keep trying though because, actually, we do care about what you want!

Thanks a lot, Gary, for so deep insight to the functionality of the tool we are using.

And for the real concern to make Vegas more versatile and neat.

The answer to the pierre-k topic was here -1.2 :)  Its trivial and seems there is no need to kill right click functionality.

The key modifyer to override grouping definitely has to be combined with Split, Delete, Trim start/end to use all its functionality.  Your proposal in 2.2 is very interesting and seems not braking existing paths. I'm also had the idea to make the ignore event grouping button (or assigned to it keyboard combination) reswitchable to normal/press modifyer functionality inside the preferences (maybe only internal).

And really missing Event Properties shortcut (for example Shift+E)   to access media resampling/ playback rate or alpha things.

Thanks for care :)

Thanks Gary

Most intelligent, insightful comment we have had in a long time.  Well done, and keep it up.

  1. Use the right mouse button to drag across and select multiple events
    1. Right-mouse-drag is already taken. When you drag an event with the right mouse button, you get a context menu upon button release...

But not if you click with the right mouse button somewhere on the timeline but not on an event, then drag across the events you want to select, which is how I was thinking it would work. That currently just sets the loop region, same as the left mouse button does. So it seems to me it would be available.

jOn wrote on 11/17/2016, 4:22 AM

It  would be nice to use the right click+hover as Selection tool shortcut.

pierre-k wrote on 7/2/2021, 3:16 AM

Since Version 14, I've wanted this innovation every year. Can we look forward to you applying it in the VP19 version?

thanks for the info.

Right click for selection, that's brilliant & faster! Maybe invert left click as selection & right click for loop region. Win-win situation
