Suggestion: J/L Cut system for VEGAS Pro

alifftudm95 wrote on 8/26/2021, 7:14 AM

I think almost all, (maybe all of them?) NLE use the same method to to make a J/L cut in the timeline, including VEGAS Pro. You need to Un-group them first, drag one of the clip or audio to create L or J shape, regroup them and merge it with other event. The grouping part required extra steps and sometimes you accidently shift the audio from the visuals causing offset/un-sync media. Yes you can argue VEGAS Pro and even some other NLE have a Offset indicator (Red color with minus sign) to tell you the event is slip few millisecond or Frame, but what if the audio ur using is from different recorder?

So I came out with J/L Cut system. If you hover you're mouse at the edge of the event, you either get Trim/Crossfade or Snapping offset. I personally never use the snapping offset function. Maybe what VEGAS Team can do is, 50% bottom section of the event for both Video & Audio will read the mouse cursor as J/L cut function. So editor can pull or push only the video or audio without even need to Ungroup the media.

This will significantly reduce editing mistakes like forgotten to re-group the event, and speed up the editing workflow.

I use J/L cut alot on my tutorial video.

@alifftudm95, hold your Shift key down and then trim the edge of the audio or video event. Holding the Shift key temporarily overrides the grouping and enables you do do exactly what you want to do.

@gary-rebholz

I wish you would do such introductory tutorials for version 19 again, as you did for version 18 - and include such (supposedly long known) tricks.

You see, it is highly necessary......

Many thanks from me for this too!

@vkmast
Of course - but there you see once again how necessary regular refreshers are. 😉

However, my request to @gary-rebholz regarding webinars remains valid - and as you can see, I am not the only one.

vkmast wrote on 8/26/2021, 9:56 AM

Of course, but don't expect to get refreshers for all KB shortcuts in tutorials. As you can see, the forum may be quicker as a refresher. 😎

Solved?? In VP 19 still missing the most simple way to: delete or truncate parts of a grouped V/A event using keyboard instead of switching 2 times "ignore event grouping" shortcut.

Yes, you can move it from the group: Right click+ drag, but you cant delete it without "ignore event grouping" twice.

What if holding Shift you also can be in "temporarily ignore grouped events" mode - it allows you to truncate with the mouse by draging or use Alt+] to truncate it by keyboard.

Thanks,

Marco. wrote on 9/3/2021, 9:47 AM

Deleting only one of a paired/grouped Event is just a matter of an options setting.

alifftudm95 wrote on 9/3/2021, 9:59 AM

Maybe can assign backspace key for deleting one the paired event if possible?

The topic is to make "temporarily ignore grouping" shortcut to work like the modifier button- to allow event editing shortcuts work under "ungrouped" mode.

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/8/2021, 9:06 AM

@jjOn, to temporarily override grouping during a move, click with the left mouse button. Then, before you move your mouse, hold the right mouse button down. Then make your move while holding both buttons.

Heads up that while this is the technique today, it is possible this could change based on some other work we're currently doing. It remains to be seen. But it works in your current build and if it changes it will be replaced by another method (the functionality will not go away).

Sorry; I see I misread your post and you already know this shortcut. Still working on my reading skills...

jetdv wrote on 9/8/2021, 9:32 AM

@gary-rebholz, I wish the shift-drag resize would still snap to the cursor location. Instead, it's just free dragging.

Yelandkeil wrote on 9/8/2021, 9:38 AM

For deleting one of a paired/grouped Event, I usually draw it to a new track and delete that track.

I don't like the EditingTool circle move with key D, I redefine this function-key only for deleting event or track as I right click it.
My personal Key-functions are over VEGAS, Soundforgepro and ACIDpro --

For second monitor preview, my key is: CTRL+WIN;

for RAM-preview I add: ALT-Gr(right side of the spacebar)+M

for AutoRipple I add: ALT-Gr+L

@jetdv for video event it depends on whether the frame-quantize is on or not; for audio event it's always free dragging as a basic function.

@Yelandkeil, not when doing the Shift-Drag to resize an audio event but not the grouped audio event. It's snapping to a frame boundary. It's not snapping to the cursor location. For example, say I want a J cut by adding 15 frames to the video track but leave the audio alone. Put the cursor at the end of the event, press the right arrow 15 times to move the cursor 15 frames (yes, I'm zoomed in so that one arrow is one frame). Now hold down the SHIFT key and resize the video to the new cursor location. It will not snap to the cursor.

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/8/2021, 9:57 AM

@jetdv,

I wish the shift-drag resize would still snap to the cursor location. Instead, it's just free dragging.

Hold the Shift key as you start your trim, as you already know. But what's not obvious is that as soon as you move, the Shift key switches from temporarily ignoring the grouping (which will stay the case during your move) to now overriding snapping. So, hold the Shift key, start your move, and release the Shift key. With the Shift key now released, snapping works as expected.
