Thumbnails

I am running Vegas HD Platinum V 10 on a Winows XP SP3 computer. I need thumbnails for M2T files in Vegas Explorer. They are present in Project Media, but not in Explorer. I can't easily tell which clips to add to my projects without thumbnails. I can play the M2t files with several players and therefore must have the necessary codec. I tried a registry edit found on the web with no success. I seem to be lacking something in Windows. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements.

Thanks for your suggestion. I installed the latest version of QuickTime, but it niether displays .m2t thumbs nor plays m2t clips.

I can play .m2t files with several players includung Windows Media Player, but they display icons, not thumbs.

Explorer Windows XP needs a piece of code telling it how to make thumbnails for .m2t files. Does anyone know about this?

Yep, I shoot 95% of my stuff with m2t and had the same problem for years. Asked here, and looked all over the internet with no answers. Very frustrating, and incredibly slow editting since you have to play each clip to see what it is!! I wish I could tell you with 100% certainty how I fixed it, but it was a long time ago. I believe the trick was to download the KLite codec pack (free), and then that's when the magic happened and I could finally see thumbnails instead of icons. Let us know if this is the answer, as I know just how difficult it is otherwise. Cin

Don't know about WinXP, but in Win7 at least you can work around this with VMS10 and 11Plat, if you have Tree View selected in Explorer. Right click the highlighted folder there and Explore Current Folder. If you have that in a smaller window on the desktop, you can see your thumbnails and the clip you need without playing it.

I have VMS 11 build 247. I don't see thumbnails for any file types in the Vegas Explorer (JPG, AVI, MOV, etc.). I don't see any View option for thumbnails. I only see:
Tree view
Region View
Summary View
Details
All Files.

Should I be able to see thumbnails in the Explorer Tab window? I only see them in the Project Media Tab.

Before you think about installing any codec packs, do a full system backup first. K-Lite may have unintended consequences for your editing workflow, and it is harder to get rid of than a case of bedbugs.

Barbult,
That is just the way I see it too.
I can't find thumbnails in the Explorer tab window either. But if you right-click there, you'll find the option to Explore Current Folder. Clicking that you'll be able to open the folder to the desktop along with VMS and see the thumbnails. Not the same of course, but at least you don't have to play the clips.

Thanks for your suggestion. I installed the Klite Codec package, but it did not help. I then uninstalled it.

There are a number of references to that package as a potential solution to the problem, but I can play m2t files with VLC and Windows Media player so I must already have the necessary codecs.

What I seem to need is a Windows XP shell extension that tells Windows how to make thumbs for m2t files.

It seems that adding a registry entry is what's needed.
