timeline view automatic scrolling?

gary-o wrote on 6/14/2020, 2:20 AM

How does one set the view so that it's not the scrubline that scrolls across the screen during playback, but the timeline itself that scrolls (backwards) while the scrubline stays in place?

To clarify the question, I'd like the timeline to autoscroll horizontally while playing, with the scrubline staying in a fixed position.

This way I can then keep the bits that I'm editing more or less at the same place, e.g. in the middle or maybe just a third of the way into the screen, without having to scroll horizontally with the horizontal scrollbar to see what's off the screen on the right...

Is there a way to do this?
Thanks :)

(Currently, I just try to follow the scrubline by scrolling the timeline backwards during playback with the shift-mousewheel function.)

Yes! 😃

(On laptops, you must select NumLock in order for this to work...)

Is there a way to configure a keyboard shortcut for this?

It turns out that I need the numeric keypad for other things, and I don't always want to have NumLock on. Num5 doesn't seem to have any effect either, regardless of whether NumLock is on or not. I could, of course, buy an external numeric keypad if that's the only solution.

What is the action called, so I can search for it in the keyboard shortcut configuration section, and then hopefully assign a different key to it? I looked up various lists of keyboard shorcuts, but this isn't mentioned in any of them.

Thanks

If you want it to do it all of the time, you can change it in the hidden preferences.

Yes. it doesn't do exactly the same thing, it doesn't keep the cursor centered, but it does scroll the timeline when the cursor hits the right side. the numeric . is keeping the cursor centered, it is not a true scroll, it is just a side effect.

gary-o wrote on 6/15/2020, 4:12 AM

what a shame, I changed the setting as directed - but I'm specifically for a way to keep the cursor more on the LEFT side of the screen... even in the center would do. :o

(something to add to feature requests in due course, methinks...)

Now I have the new version (18), I'm hoping to revisit this issue.

Is there a page or forum for feature requests?

I'd still like to have the cursor more or less limited to the left one-third or one-quarter of the screen, so that I can view the upcoming events in the timeline while the preview video is playing.

I've tried . and \ but these don't really work (neither does Smooth Scroll setting). The playback is very juddery and if you don't do it right, you still end up with the cursor on the far (right) side of the screen.

How about a view setting in preferences to fix the cursor area? Or a new feature where you can kind of lock the cursor to a particular position (or area) in the screen and the timeline then scrolls in the background?

:)

You might add your feature requests to a thread such as this one (currently 76 comments long). Or just include something like [Feature request] in your topic title to get it better noticed.
