Track Motion does nothing, after a while

peterh337 wrote on 5/30/2020, 5:11 AM

Hello All,

I am using v16 Pro build 307.

This control on the left

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530218910711.jpg

works initially but at some point stops doing anything. Originally about 10hrs of video was loaded and it was initially working, but now (total video length 35 mins) it has no effect at all. I am just setting a 1.8 deg rotation and then zooming in a little to remove the black corners which result from the rotation

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530378920911.jpg

I think it must be a bug. Is there some other way to apply the same 1.8 degrees to everything on that track?

Many thanks.

Below the workspace in the Track Motion window, check to make sure that there isn't a keyframe node that returns Track Motion to the default setting (.e. 0.0 deg rotation and no zoom).

First update to the last build #424, e.g. using MAGIX Download Center.

peterh337 wrote on 5/30/2020, 5:56 AM

I don't see any keyframes - see the 2nd screenshot above. I have used keyframes but years ago.

Is this a known bug?

peterh337 wrote on 5/30/2020, 6:09 AM

OK; I downloaded the update. REALLY GREAT (NOT). I had the program installed on a laptop also, apparently legally, but Vegas no longer allow two devices, so the online activation forced me to deactivate the laptop one.

Did it fix the bug? NO. And now I have lost my laptop and the ability to edit videos while travelling.

There are great reasons for never upgrading a program which works and this has to be the best example for me of 2020. It's cost me a few hundred $. I've been using Vegas for years and will try installing some earlier version on the laptop. The earlier ones did everything I ever needed. The one problem is the Vegasaur timeline importer which doesn't work backwards AFAIK.

Just checked the laptop and sure enough the v16 program immediately checks on the internet and refuses to run. If I had known Vegas is limiting to 1 installation I would have never done this useless update.

Is there some other way? I have maybe 100 pieces on the timeline. Is there a way to apply track motion to all of them? I think it is Event Pan/Crop but I can' see a way to apply it to multiple selected bits.

Other than Vegas Pro 365 (or VP bought via Steam), 2 installations are allowed. Sometimes, updating to a new build does result in the registration system assuming that a 3rd installation is being attempted - it's happened to me in the past. Just go to My Products on My Account and de-activate the registration for the computer that you are wanting to update VP on, and then start VP again on that computer - it should then activate properly.

From the main FAQ:

"9. How many computers can I use VEGAS Pro on?
You can use VEGAS Pro (14.0 and later) simultaneously on 2 devices. There are 2 ways to deactivate a device so you can activate a different one:

Visit your MAGIX account > My Products > Show More Details > Deactivate. This option can be used only once a month.

From the VEGAS Pro Help menu choose Deactivate the Software on this PC. This option can be used as often as you wish. An internet connection is required."

Note the possible error @Dexcon mentions.

It gets better. The upgraded one hangs with "initialising UI" and the control-shift startup trick doesn't get it out of it.

Looks like I need to copy all the files to the laptop whose v16 has not yet been "upgraded".

What is the recommended procedure for this? Uninstall in Control panel?

I have managed to make the updated program start by rebooting the PC...

Track motion works on track 1 but does not do anything on track 2.

j-v I can't find where this dialogue is. I can select all the bits on track 2 but if I apply the rotation to one of them it doesn't copy to the others and that dialogue doesn't appear.

I am sorry to ask stupid questions. I don't do this professionally; I use the program every few months for editing either ski videos (which don't need rotation) or flying videos (which need a 1.5 to 1.8 degree rotation because the camera mount is slightly off vertical).

Dexcon wrote on 5/30/2020, 7:45 AM

Track Motion needs to be set for each individual track. Setting it on track 1 only affects track 1 - not every other track.

Yes, sure. That's what I am doing - see above screenshots. The track 2 setting worked on track 2 until I was a few hours through the editing, then I noticed all the video was no longer rotated. I have seen this before, in previous versions, but can't remember how I fixed it.

And v16 again doesn't start up. It seems like the updated version starts up only fresh after a reboot. I am running win7-64. Is this no longer supported? If so they ought to check OS version at startup.

Check the minimum specs for VP16 via the 1st comment by jetdv on the following post:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/minimum-requirements-for-vegas-pro-16--113476/

W7 is supported in VP16. If your system meets all the minimum specs, at least that's one avenue that can be eliminated.

A data point on the upgrade: it always says there is a duplicate device. One has to delete one's own computer! Then it accepts the new installation.

I totally uninstalled v16 (and music maker and the other stuff I never use) and did a fresh install from the above upgrade URL. Now it starts up.

As a precaution in case this new version is not backwards compatible on the veg file, I did a Save As under a new veg.

The new install still hangs however, almost every time. It turns out one has to go into Task Manager and delete a leftover process. This shows the old process which needs to be deleted before v16 will load. The 2GB+ process is the one which is trying to start but can't.

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530548931814.jpg

On a later occassion it shows up like this

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530088942114.jpg

and again v16 hangs on start until this one is terminated manually. But not every time!

V16 always leaves behind a bit of itself. This shows 3 of them!

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530548973214.jpg

It doesn't always stop another one loading, which is how you can see 3 of them above. But now it has hung again so I have to clean up.

Buggy software...

Anyway I am back with a running program and would be grateful for any tips on how to apply a 1.8 degree rotation and a sligh zoom-in to about 100 clips on track 2 (I think they called called "clips" - sorry I have never done a course; I have mere used video editors since the original Pinnacle garbage 15 years ago).

This is what my project looks like

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530468952314.jpg

and you can see exactly why I need that rotation :)

I am applying the rotation in track 2 track motion and as you can see it does nothing

Found it: the slider in the keyframe portion has to be moved to the right hand end

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530018984214.jpg

It doesn't explain why it was working fine hours into the editing...

j-v wrote on 5/30/2020, 8:45 AM

Buggy software...

No, nothing wrong with the software but these are buggy Windows settings.
Your Windows taskmanager is not refreshing itself when this is needed.
I can start all my Vegas programs so that they are all working at the same time VVMS 16, VMS Pl 16, both versions of VMS 17, Vegas Pro 16 and Vegas Pro 17. After closing them down right after each other, my Windows taskbar shows nothing of Vegas anymore.

The reality is that v16 hangs unless I delete that process. That process is real enough.

Just now I had one which was 600MB

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20200530248995114.jpg

And there is still something funny about the track motion settings. The sliders are all the way to the left each time I go in, effectively applying the track motion only to the start of the track.

Try resetting the software. Follow the instructions closely.

You did rotate nothing, the rotating you want to achieve you have to do with "Orientating", but the best you can choose is this to do in Pan/Crop on all the events that need this with one click I showed you before by selecting al events and rightclick the first one that is selected

Yes; done that lots of times.

j-v - I have been doing this for years with Vegas. The track motion control on the left used to "just work", for the whole track, as one would expect. It is working fine on track 1 where I am just using x/y translation to move the GPS data further into the corner. No funny business at all. But on the video track, it is doing weird stuff. I am totally confused. On parts of the track it is working, on parts it isn't. It's as if there were loads of keyframes hidden away somewhere, each with its start and end.
