Worst case, he may not to contact Sony support and let them know the program has been removed from your machine. Particularly since this is an older version of the program, Sony will likely be fine with it.

it was two years ago but i think i did do the upgrade from the movie studio. i guess maybe i should just buy him his own copy. do they do gift purchases here?

You should be able to give your old copy to him. It's just that he won't be able to use it to upgrade later, since that license has already been used for an upgrade.

Yes, you can transfer that copy to him .. but it will not be eligible for him to qualify for an upgrade to another version since that can only happen once and you used that option already. However it will be a fully functional program as is.
