Trimming clips in MS13

I've just started editing a project in MS13 which I had almost completed in MS11. One of my transitions is a straight cut with a 1 frame overlap and a 13 frame overlap for the audio (used to add a smooth transition of the audio). To do this I have to Ignore Event Grouping and trim each overlapping video portion of the clip back so that there is a 1 frame overlap. This was easy and quick to do in MS11 but I've encountered a problem doing this in MS13 and I wondered if I am missing some setting. After I've trimmed one clip back to the correct position for the 1 frame overlap I attempt to trim the other clip accordingly. As soon as I go to click on the trim handle of the other clip the first clip gets highlighted. The only way I can accomplish the task is to move one of the clips onto another track to trim it then move it back into position. Has anyone else come up against this problem? Has anyone got a solution?
Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks vk.
I've just had a go with the numeric keyboard option and it's OK. It's so OK that I think, once I've got used to the key allocation, it'll be quicker than my method in MS11.
Thanks again. Your help, along with the help given by the other stalwarts of this forum, is greatly appreciated.
