Upgrade from Movie Studio Platinum 13.0

TDK wrote on 9/19/2018, 3:01 PM

Hi

I've been using Vegas since the early days of Sony. I've made over 1000 renders over the years and my YouTube channel (Triggerboy62) with over 500 videos has over 2000 subscribers at the moment. Anyway, I'm currently with the 13.0 version since the 14.0 had bugs that I could not come to terms with. Now I'm bombarded with upgrade offers for version 15.0 but also for PRO. I'm clueless. Please help. Should I stick with the Movie Studio or go Pro or stay with version 13.0?

Is there something you miss in Movie Studio 13 and hope to see in Movie Studio 15 or Vegas Pro 16?

vkmast wrote on 9/19/2018, 3:17 PM

You could always use the trial to see if you actually need anything there. Anyway, the upgrade price ain't too bad.

Marco, this may sound stupid but I miss a few things in 13 that was available in earlier versions. For example I cant switch the cursor between "normal" and "fade" without going down to the bottom right of the screen. In previous versions it could be done by using the right mouse button or something. Cant remember exactly how it was but still miss that feature. I also cannot select a bunch of items on the timeline by selecting and area with the mouse cursor. Make a square box and everything that fit into it would be selected. In version 14 I never found out how to properly "disable resample" on the media on the timeline.

It would be great to be able to work with 4K but I guess that is a computer issue. New transitions would be nice and picture in picture as well. Also, a nicer text editor and more useful scrolling options.

vkmast, I will check out the free trial. But is the Pro version worth getting? Now it is offered to me for under 100USD. Or is that some sort of misstake?

I would upgrade to 15, it does have again the tools you missed in 13 (and more) and it works well with 4k (when you're computer is fast enough, if not it can make and work with proxies of your 4k footage).

Don't know if it's a mistake or not, but I have not seen Vegas Pro 16 offered on the Magix Vegas site for under 100 USD. 3POINT mentions good points ( ! ), but don't forget the trials (Movie Studio Platinum and Vegas Pro).

"For example I cant switch the cursor between "normal" and "fade" without going down to the bottom right of the screen. In previous versions it could be done by using the right mouse button or something."

Do mean something different than actually "fade" here? There is no need (no matter which version) to switch the cursor mode just to fade an Event. Crossfades (dissolves) are always done by overlapping Events and fade in/out by dragging the fade-handle of the Events. All done with the regular (right) mouse button.

vkmast wrote on 9/20/2018, 3:53 PM

You may be delighted to know that the "fade" experiment in MSP 13 was abandoned in VMSP 14 and later.

Long time gone since I used version 13. Did it really need to switch the cursor mode to fade Events there? If so, sorry for the misinformation I gave above.

vkmast wrote on 9/20/2018, 4:25 PM

Movie Studio Platinum 13 introduced those fade and trim handles on events. The Fade button on the Editing toolbar below the timeline activated the fade handle.

In my opinion, MS13 had the worst UI ever for MS. For me, MS15 has an almost perfect UI, like VPro16. At the moment it is hard to see a difference between UI of VPro and MS.

Here are current offers. The Pro 15 that was offered to me earlier is no longer available.

VEGAS Pro 16 249USD

VEGAS Pro 16 Edit 199USD

VEGAS Pro 16 Suite 349USD

VEGAS Movie Studio 15 Suite 79,99USD

VEGAS Movie Studio 15 Platinum 49,99USD

There is also a cloud version:

VEGAS PRO 365: 19,99/month 3 month plan or 16,67/month 12 month plan

Maybe the MS15 Suite would be the most natural upgrade for me. I would save up to 357USD according to the website.

I'd tend to agree with that choice.

I have now been using the Movie Studio 15.0 Platinum for a while. I downloaded everything that I got in the offer. Lots of stuff I have never used. Its the best version ever, as far as I can remember anyway, but there is one very annoying feature. It takes a minute to open. It would not be that bad but for my process I need to close and reopen the program all the time. The reason is that I save frames to file and edit them outside in an other program. If I don't close MS then they will not show up in the Explorer window in MS. Any thoughts?

Maybe it depends which option used, but I always save a snapshot to a location and can use it immediatly in te program and outside it in another while VMS is still open and running.

j-v / there are two opitons. Save to file or to clipboard. I save to file and then I take the file and open it in a photo shop program and then I use it again in VMS. But cant find the new remamed file in VMS. Need to close it and then start it again. Then I see the picture. However, I have lots of pictures I edit and need to close and restart the program maybe 20 to 50 per project. Not working for me right now the way the old 13.0 version did. It opened in 5 seconds. Verison 15 takes about a minute.

The problem is that when VMS15 is open and running it cannot open media that was created or uploaded to the computer "after" the project was opened. That means if I save a frame from the timeline as a picture and I open that picture in lets say Paint and edit some graphics in it and save it with a new name in the same location then VMS15 will not show it in the Explorer window and therefore I can not bring it back to the project currently running. So I have to close VMS15 and then reopen it. After I do that I can grab the new picture in the Explorer window and drag it to the timeline.

Therefore you have to use the "refresh" button on the toolbar.

Or alternatively open a Windows Explorer window (outside of VMS15) and drag the file from there to your Media Pane or timeline in VMS. Easy if you are using two monitors but a bit more tricky if you are using just one.
