Upgrade price is pillage!!!

aboammar wrote on 4/9/2017, 6:54 PM

I upgraded from Vegas Pro 12 to Vegas Pro 13 Suite for $299.95 (was $149.95 for the Pro version)

Now to upgrade from Vegas Pro 13 Suite to Vegas Pro 14 Suite, I have to pay 349 (or $249.00 for the Pro version)!!

This is just too much, and nothing in Vegas 14 is encouraging me to upgrade except for the support of 4K displays!

Definitely I will skip 14, and will wait for Vegas Pro 15.

Yeah it's way too much, 4k render templates don't have 5.1 audio output that I can find either, what's the point in that?

Well, what I meant for 4K display support is the support for high DPI monitors, not 4K projects or 4K outputs.

It's not pillage, if you're not happy with the price then don't upgrade. As far as I understand, V13 Suite & 14 Suite are the same except new version of Vegas, so just upgrade Vegas & don't get an upgraded license of the other programs if you don't need them.

If you "have" to upgrade like your other thread then that's the cost of "having" to upgrade.

I just tried one of my SN's from Sonic Foundry I upgraded over a decade ago that SF/Sony wouldn't upgrade because I already upgraded it & Magix will let you upgrade those #'s too. That would mean technically I could get 4 copies of Vegas 14 for the upgrade price even though only 1 of my SN's qualified for upgrades via SF/Sony.

Sounds like an awesome deal to me. :)

Are you kidding me?? Magix is charging $100 more than what Sony used to charge for the Pro version upgrade!

This is 100% pillage, and unless you are working for Magix, you will not feel or understand this!

I really do not need the extras (software and plugins) in the Suite version. I also do not need the extremely little new features in Vegas Pro 14 except for the support of high DPI screens! So I am not crazy to pay $249 just to utilize one single feature! I just will change my screen resolution from 4K to FullHD and keep using version 13 until V15 comes.

I tried with an Acid MS 10 S/N and got the same offer. It did not work like this a while back, but it seems they've opened this "loophole" again to "upgrade". The funny thing is still that no upgrade pricing offer to VMSP 14 is available this way even with the legit SMSP 13 S/N. OTOH, I get regularly offers to save $199 and buy Movie Edit Pro, so maybe they want me to abandon MSP altogether.

So, with that logic, there is no such thing as overpricing. You could charge a thousand dollars for a bottle of milk and that's just fine. If I wandered across a desert and came to a milk stand, where a friendly friar sold refreshment, there could be no unfair price for his wares? In my opinion the friar would not be very honest if he took too great an advantage of the situation. You differ, that's fine, maybe you have a different perspective regarding honesty, fairness and economics.

It is true that I am rethinking my choice of editing and audio production software, even though I have stuck with Vegas pro and acid since version 5 I think. This version was really expensive, incredibly buggy and probably not worth sticking the course, whereas before , my loyalty to the product was well deserved.

I think I'm experiencing a bug that is hiding the 4k/5.1 settings, many of the templates have completely blank auio tabs. It's weird and really disappointing. Can anyone point out the templates that DO support it so I can compare mine , a screenshot would be really helpful... thanks :)💩

Hmm I don't think its that... MOST of them have some problem . I only rebuild this whole computer including the OS and I haven't had V14 very long. I don't think I've messed with too many templates.

I'm finding all the bugs pretty tiresome, so that would be another.

In your situation waiting for V15 makes sense. However, with a longer perspective in the business I marvel at how inexpensive editing software is today. Remember when Final Cut Pro cost $999. And, don't ask about Avid's original cost and upgrades. Vegas is still a bargain. The payback for professional users amounts to a couple of days of editing. What's not to like about that? Of course, I realize the economics of my use of the software may not be the same as it is for others.

Price wise, Vegas is not a bargain anymore.. Used to be, but not anymore!

Final Cut Pro nowadays cost less than $300 for the full version! Vegas Pro Suite costs much more, $800. Even the cheapst version, Vegas Pro Edit costs $400 .. that is a $100 more than Final Cut Pro!!

Ah, come on! I remember when gasoline was $0.39 a gallon. The price has kept climbing and climbing, but I still buy it to run my car. I could switch to electric, or buy a bike or walk. However, I choose to use a gasoline powered vehicle and I pay the price asked for the fuel. Suck it up, man; there's no pillage involved, just the cost of doing business and living in the 21st century.

I hate to say it but the programmers have to eat too. I remember when Vegas was less that 100 megs and now it's 430 and still growing.

That's not overcharging, that is fine. If it's worth it to someone they'll pay it. If nobody wants to spend that much $$ on milk then the price will drop or the person selling goes out of business.

Just don't buy the upgrade. No one is forcing you to. Decide "I don't want to pay that much" and don't. My kids got that down pretty well @ 6 & 7.

i think a better analogy would be the cost of electricity relative to petrol price ;-)

after all, doesn't matter what car / nle you drive, they still need a source of power.

meanwhile matrix has lost me as a potential client - 14's been a disappointment and the bugs introduced in the last update should never have made it out the door. i'll have a look at 15, if there is a 15, but i'll be unlikely to buy at the present pricing - especially when resolve is free.

Chuzz wrote on 4/11/2017, 7:55 AM

Price hike but no quality hike... it's bad maths. I really wouldn't mind so much if V14 didn't drive like a car with no steering wheel. That's not something you find out till you start using a program for serious work, when it really counts. I thought it was ok till after the trial ran out and I paid for it. I will see how the next update goes, but it hasn't earned it's money yet, in fact I think Vegas owes ME at this rate🤑. I'm allowed that opinion, or not?

VidMus wrote on 4/11/2017, 11:31 AM

I upgraded and paid for 14. I used and played with it a little while. Now I am using Sony Vegas Pro 13 exclusively. Eventually I will use 14 and then maybe 15. Right now, a snail can move lightening fast compared to the speed of my making changes! I am just an old long fart... ;)

P.S. For me, 14 is an investment for future updates/upgrades.

Yeah...that was my reasoning as well. I tinker with V14 after each update, but return to V13.

At least the latest updates haven't crashed and burned.

I stuck with 13. Vegas Pro 14 seemed like a bad face lift with a few minor new features and plenty of bugs mixed in with each new version. I sure hope they return to the days of actually innovating and offering lots of enticing new features with each major update. They've been living on the Sonic Foundry "glory days" for way too long so I'm curious to see what version 15 brings.
