With the limited information, you could first try resetting Vegas back to the default settings, This often fixes things. To reset VP, see this post.

What was the exact error message and when did you get it?

There is no exact error info... a pop up advertising Sony 17. I have 12 and have been happy with it... do not need new bells and whistles.

I have tried to reset Vegas back to default settings... will not work to reset...

I think that the ad ware is the problem and do not know how to turn it off. Help!

That's probably VEGAS Pro 17 from MAGIX though, not any Sony-

And be sure to closely follow the instructions 1 to 5 in the link @rraud gave, when you try to reset.

I would uninstall VP12 using a third-party uninstaller that cleans the left-over registry entries, (Revo Uninstall for instance). Download the latest VP-12 build from the Magix Download Center and re-install. You will need your serial number to download and install.
After the reinstall, in "Options> Preferences> General", uncheck the "Use Net Notify to keep informed about Sony products updates".
