Vegas 16 vs 17 - Upgrade now, or hold off?

Liberty610 wrote on 8/20/2019, 4:26 AM

Hey everyone. I've researched the new features in Vegas 17. I currently have Vegas pro 16 and was wondering if the upgrade to 17 is worth it, or if I should hold off. I have wedding videos pending, so the new color grading system in 17 looked promising to use, but I wasn't susure if that was worth dropping $200+ on the upgrade.

Most my footage us 1080p at 60fps with the files being X AVCH S format (50 mbps) from a Sony NX100. I am sure there will be bugs present as well.

This is the system I'll running it on...

If your about to do an important project and VP16 is stable for you then wait. The colour grading can be done with VP16 tools anyway.

VP17 is a worthwhile upgrade and is stable for me but it may not be for you.

It is possible to upgrade and have both Vegas 16 and 17 in your systeme. Take care to continue with projects generated in VP16 in VP17. That can cause troubles.

Yea, I know that if you use a newer version, the save file updates to that version and lanes it hard to go back to a previous version. I'm pretty good about backing up my files for those situations.

I see that Magix is boasting 30 new features for version 17, and I am seeing a discount offer until the 28th. So I'm on the fence about if I should grab the update or not. I'm set-topstill looking Iniinto the new features, but that discounted price is something I don't want to miss out on if it's worth it.

@Liberty610 … if you buy now at the intro pricing, you get the upcoming upgrades which will hopefully solve the early useability problems. OTOH, there's always the prospect of an offer in 3 months time with Black Friday/Cyber Monday … but that's a gamble as to whether it will be better than what you can get today.

See, this is my delema ha. I don't really know what the offers will be down the road. But I also see a new version coming once a year, and I have seen some versions come out that just don't offer much to make it worth the upgrade.

What exactly are the upcoming uprgades you've mentioned? I believe I have Vegas Pro 16 edit. I don't do a lot of special effect stuff, so I went with the edit version that didn't include the borix FX or whatever it weas that came with the higher package. I mostly shoot/edit party events, family gatherings, and weddings that take simple transition effects and some audio work.

@Dexcon means the upcoming free updates/new builds of the current version which "will hopefully solve [most if not all] the early usability problems". As for the future offers, we don't know for sure either.

Early usability problems have been very minor and there have only been one or two cases that I can think of where we were not able to easily find a solution to any problems experienced, so I'd say it's pretty stable.... and upgrading to 17 doesn't mean you have to uninstall 16, so I would download the 17 demo, start a test project in it, make sure all is well, do a quick test render to make sure that part works ok (just gotta limit renders to 2 mins in the demo), and then you can buy from there and keep editing in 16 until you are confident 17 can handle your work load reliably.

If you really want to know you have 16's stability, but also want to take advantage of 17's new features, you could always edit in 16, put the final touches/coloring/etc in on 17 afterwards, that way you have a fully edited backup project saved in 16 ready to fall back on should you experience any issues. Just don't save over that original 16 project in 17 and you won't break backwards compatibility with 16.

Thanks for the replies frosty. I was thinking of doing just this if I upgraded. I like the look for the colorgrading workflo in 17. I am just not sure if the fends are worth it just yet.

Can anyone fill me in on what this new Vegas post is? Is it seperate from Vegas Pro? Or is it a bundle that incorporates Veags Pro with add ons? I am some what confused by this...
