Vegas Pro 16 and Windows 10

Martin L wrote on 10/31/2018, 4:56 AM

I am considering getting a new workstation to replace my 7 year old main workhorse. On my present machine I have Windows 7 Professional and it has been working fine. But if I get a new one it would be natural to get one with Windows 10 on it since Windows 7 starts to get old. But I have also heard warnings about W10 from some computer guys.

Now, is VP16 working fully on W10 or is W7 still preferrable?

On Magix website there are two messages. One says ALL their present software supports W10.

But in the specification of which programs that do Vegas is NOT included. (see images)

Any thoughts or experiences?

If you like intrusive bloat ware, you'll LOVE Windoes Diez.... If, on the other hand, you like an operating system that is not worried about your spending habits and sex life, (I mean, who would even want that) you could stay with Win 7, it's up to you. Don't try to adjust or customize Win 10, because it KNOWS what you need, no need to adjust anything, and if you do....well......be forwarned.

Wow! And how about running VP16 on it?

"MAGIX welcomes Windows 10!      --- All the latest MAGIX programs from 2015 and their plugins and previous versions work reliably with Microsoft's new operating system."

MAGIX acquired the VEGAS product lines in mid-2016. That page does not seem to be updated to include them.

The Vegas info is mostly on https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/ (choose your area). The product pages there include specifications/system requirements.

Many of us use Windows 10 successfully. But then there are others.

The Vegas system requirements include w10 so I guess it officially is supported, but strange that it was not specied in that list of software. It seems though that it would be quite safe to get w10 for the new machine. Thanks!

It is and besides that you are able in W10 home to install every program you have in compability modes from Windows Vista on and start the program in comptabily from W7 on.
On my Windows 10 Pro version I have comptability modes from W95 and higher.

I am not trying to stir the pot. My experience, via free upgrade to Win 10 from 7, had me turning back in horror (there is a return to Win 7 built in, did not work so great, ended up fresh re-installing Win 7 which is always a good thing to do anyway after a couple of years or so)..

As with everything in software lately, it pretends to be more "user friendly." Really more 'locked down' (as it makes decisions 'for you) so adjustments and tweaks one might usually make became really convoluted, even changes for your monitor running on two or three screens became a convoluted nightmare, at least for me. Partially, yes, unfamiliar territory, but almost nothing is instantly accessible, WYSIWYG, the operating system is "protecting itself" from too stupid (we might assume?) users, there is the now expected (with all software, phones so forth) intrusiveness, asking for this information, all the cloud tie ins, it is just too oppressively invasive, and that is just my initial take, but it had me RUNNING back. I absolutely hated Win 10..

Tell me what I might be missing, if anything, or how I might have gotten it wrong.

Maybe your account settings.
I'm administrator who use the setting to not get any notification.
I'm the boss of Windows 10 latest update (because I wanted it) with minor usefull settings of Classic Shell and I'm very satisfied with all.

A few weeks ago upgraded my seven year old Windows 7 system to a Ryzen 7 2700 RX580 system (long as it's affordable, stable, quiet, for me good enough is good enough) Windows 10, Vegas 16, everything running smoothly. You can make your Windows 10 desktop look enough like your Windows 7 desktop not to notice which you're running.

I upgraded to Win10 Pro from Win7, and all Vegas Pros are working perfectly.

The biggest thing you are missing is a current fully supported product from Microsoft 😉

On a serious note, Windows 7 is now in the "Extended Support" cycle, rather than mainstream support, therefore only security updates are provided, and support for new products (e.g. new processor architectures, new graphics card architectures etc.) is not available from Microsoft and you're at the mercy of the manufacture to offer support - which they might not officially (e.g. AMD Ryzen).

Yes, Windows 10 has some "quirks", but overall it's a more stable (and in a lot of cases faster) system these days.

PC: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G Desktop w/16GB DDR4 and Radeon RX570 (4GB) , ~5TB of storage across various HDDs, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 audio interface, Mackie CR5BT studio monitors, 24" 1080p monitor (not anything special!)

For capture: Olympus PEN E-PL6 camera (1080p30) with external mic input adaptor and Olympus ME51S electret lavalier and Takstar SGC-598 shotgun mic and a Samsung Galaxy S10e (4K30 or 4K60) with Filmic Pro or stock video apps and external mic adaptor.

My interest in being a full time system administrator has waned so I am still running Windows 7 Pro except for my wifes new laptop. I expect my hardware upgrade in 2021 will force me to install Windows 10 version 385.

At home I have three main workstations, one for gaming, one for music and one for video. On my music system I have Cubase 9.5, WaveLab and all the drivers, plugins and applications to support making music. On my video machine I have versions of Vegas starting from 10 going to 16 Pro. On my gaming machine I have Steam, EA, plus tons of developer tools for writing applications and web sites.

All these systems run Windows 10 Pro. I'm very happy with their stability and performance and would never think of going back to Windows 7.

Another OK for Win 10 here. Vegas 13,14,15 & 16 (as well as all bundled softwares) run just fine on it. Be prepared for "you will update" occasions which can be scheduled but not indefinitely put off. Customized my start screen with big categorized tiles of often used stuff much like Win 8. You can spend as much time as you can afford getting customization tips from the web especially the "intrusive" stuff for which there is a fair amount of control (with, of course, usually accompanied by the threat of missing something because it's not web allowed, etc.) As it is clearly Msoft's way forward, might as well jump in and enjoy the fun sooner rather than later.

It might be tricky to install W10 on older HW (no drivers for some devices).

It is also tricky to install W7 on newer HW for the same reason.

So I believe that it is better to go with W10 on new HW.

I felt a bit uncomfortable in W10 after upgrade from W7. However, after a while I found a lot of nice things in it and not want to go back. I'm supporting my mom's W7 PC (remotely) and ... I do not like W7 now.

P.S. I'm using Vegas 13 & 15 on W10 without issues.
