VEGAS PRO 20 ruined by previous versions of Vegas Pro 16, 17, 18, & 19

I'm so sorry but this is very disconcerting.  I just bought Vegas Pro 20 on August 15, 2022.  Regarding my computer, I have Windows 10 version 21H2 operating system on my PC. My processor is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 4.00 GHz and I have 64.0 GB installed RAM, I have a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, and the video card is an AMD Radeon 8 GB of DDR5 memory (AMD, Advance Micro Devices is the manufacturer)

Anyway, I have Vegas Pro 16, Vegas Pro 17, Vegas Pro 18, and Vegas Pro 19 installed on my computer.  When Pro 18 and Pro 19 first came out, they were working out the bugs and I just stayed working with Vegas Pro 17 as my main Vegas Pro program and everything was working perfectly.  I would venture into Vegas Pro 18 & 19 after the updates and did some short videos with it. It is needful to say that back when I bought Vegas Pro 15, I also purchased “the NewBlueFX-Transitions-3-Ultimate” which is one of my favorite plugins.  (I am not talking about the ZOOM that comes with Vegas Pro). Inside of “NewBlueFX-Transitions-3-Ultimate” installed with Vegas Pro 16 and on up, the one plug-in that I really like is called ZOOM and I have used that for years on all my video projects and they have installed perfectly on Vegas Pro 18 & 19 with no problems.

After I installed Vegas Pro 20 on my PC on Monday, it has ruined my Vegas Pro 17, Vegas Pro 18, and Vegas Pro 19 plugins locations!  Sigh!  On the left-hand side of Vegas Pro 17, 18 & 19, the plugins, for example, inside of the ZOOM folder I just mentioned above are no longer the correct plugins inside of Vegas Pro 17, 18, & 19!  When you go to the ZOOM folder, for example, all the plugins for that ZOOM folder are now actually in the “Shredder” folder which is not right.  The plugins that are actually in the ZOOM folder right now are the plugins that are supposed to be in the WAVE folder.  The plugins for the folder “Traveling Rays” are the WRONG plugins.  It goes on and on like this and it’s all messed up.  The folder names no longer make sense for the correct plugins because the plugins have all been switched around in the wrong folders.

The only thing that seems to be working right is Vegas Pro 20!  Vegas Pro 20 has all the correct plugins inside their associated folders.  I cannot use Vegas Pro 17, 18, and 19 anymore because of this mess.  In addition, when I open up Vegas Pro 18, it also opens up my directory window every single time and I have to cancel out of it in order to get rid of it!  That would not bother me as much as the messed-up plugins that are now currently the case.

Now, I have Vegas Pro 16, 17, 18, and 19 taking up space on my hard drive and I’m “afraid” to delete them because there may be plugins that I bought from NewBlue previously and Vegas Pro 20 might need them, especially the ones I've been using for years, and then I will have a mess on my hands.

All I did was install Vegas Pro 20 with the “Vegas Stream” (which I don’t need but wanted to see what it looked like) and also with the Sound Forge and that’s it.  I did not install anything else.  I had a clean install with it but look what happened.

My question is WHY did this happen?  All of the previous Vegas Pro programs I have installed are now useless for me to use and, yet, I feel like I cannot uninstall Vegas 16, 17, 18, and 19, because it could cause more problems for Vegas Pro 20.

I did use Vegas Pro 20 for a project that I HAD to get out today, and the plugins are all in the proper folders as they should be.  And it did render out okay.  I’m just beside myself with all of these Vegas Pro programs I purchased but cannot use them anymore.

Does anyone know WHY this happened and any suggestions of what I can do about this?  The only thing that I feel “safe with” at this point is to leave everything else alone and start using Vegas Pro 20 but not knowing what trouble I may face in the future even with Vegas Pro 20 because I haven’t had time to check out all the plugins.  I just know that the ones I always have been using for years are in the right folders in Vegas Pro 20 that I can see.  But the plugins with 16, 17, 18, & 19 are now all messed up.

I’ve been a long time customer of Vegas Pro and love the program when it’s working right.  I never have any problems with any other programs installed on my computer but when it comes to Vegas Pro coming out with a new major upgrade, I have to take a deep breath because something always goes wrong.

First of all, you should be able to rest a bit easier knowing that VEGAS 20 is the most heavily tested version of VEGAS released since Magix bought it, they greatly expanded the size of the beta team for this release, and the types of hardware that it gets tested on, so it should hold up better than previous releases as far as stability goes (not to say it'll be perfect, but better).

As for the issue with your plugins, I can't offer much help there, but I'm sure there's some folks around here who have a better idea of what causes this and what can be done to fix it... We'll get you sorted.

Thank you so much for your response @fr0sty! It's good seeing you again. Thanks for informing me about Vegas Pro 20 and it being heavily tested. At least my plugins are in the right place! Thanks again!

@Debbie-Whitmer, You can rest confidently on using Vegas Pro 20, it is solid. As for the rest of all your trusted plugins, i am confident that all of them can still work well in Vegas 20. If there is a problem with any of them, often times there is a work-around in getting them to show up and work, i can assist with that..... In the meantime for this to happen, after installing Vegas 20, reinstall all your trusted plugins!

So, when you have everything working and solid with Vegas 20 and all plugs working, you can easily then uninstall and remove all other previous versions if you like, and free up all the clutter.

@Debbie-Whitmer, Did you also install "Live 2 Post"?

Please go to the previous version of VEGAS and "clear the cache". Search for instructions here but there are two ways: use the CTRL-SHIFT when starting which will fully reset VEGAS or delete some file which will cause the cache to be rebuilt without doing a full reset.

@vkmast - THANK YOU SO MUCH for the link to those directions. I have done it before but it’s been YEARS ago and I knew i would have to look it up but you gave me the link for those instructions! I appreciate so much that kindness. I’m rendering a radio broadcast right now but as soon as I get that out and posted on-line, I will start investigating these suggestions when I’m more free to concentrate. Again, thank you!

@Steve_Rhoden, @vkmast, @fr0sty and @jetdv - I just wanted to let everyone know how things worked out.  Two people told me to reset my previous version of Vegas Pro 19.  So, just to see what it would do, I did a reset on all Vegas Pros 16, 17, 18, and 19 and everything reset nicely!!  And it also corrected the rest of the errors I was having.  All the plugins are back in order again!  As I stated before in my original post, after all that mess happened, Vegas Pro 20 was the ONLY Vegas Pro that was working on my system with the plugins in the correct folders.  So, now, I decided to delete Vegas Pro 16, 18, and 19 off of my system and I just want to keep Vegas Pro 17 to be on my system just for a while longer since I have YEARS of projects originating in Vegas Pro 17 but Vegas Pro 20 will remain as my main video program in moving forward.  So, by removing those aforementioned programs, I got some of that “clutter” off my hard drive.  Everything seems to be working okay now for which I am greatly relieved!!  Whew! I want to thank EVERYONE who pitched in to help me and you surely did!!  I’m grateful for all of you.  As I stated before, when everything is working properly, I really like and enjoy using Vegas Pro.  I think the Vegas Pro video program is brilliantly constructed and I’m amazed at some of the detailed operations that it is able to perform.  When you like what you do with a program that’s user friendly but yet challenging because there is always something new to learn, it makes what you so very enjoyable and satisfying.  Thank you again for your willingness to help and your kindness in doing so!

@Debbie-Whitmer, that's because only VEGAS Pro 20 had the correct information cached (as the information had changed and the older versions had not "refreshed" their cache).

On this newest laptop I have versions 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 - my other laptop has versions 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 (it was really getting to slow to run the current versions so I stopped at 19). There's really no "clutter" unless you just needed the drive space and it's nice to be able to test things in older versions as needed. I even have an older laptop with versions 8 and 9 and an older desktop with 10, 11, 12, and 13. It's nice to have a variety of versions to be able to check things in.

Now that you know that only have Vegas Pro 17 and Vegas Pro 20 stored on my PC right now, what would happen if I decided to reinstall Vegas Pro 18 or 19 back on again; would that mess up VP-17, VP 18/19 or VP 20 by any chance? Or would everything still be okay? I look forward to your response. - Debbie

@Debbie-Whitmer, that would be perfectly fine if you want to do that. There should be no issues at all. The only issue this time is that the older versions had cached a previous version of the plugins which is why the stopped working correctly and version 20 cached the new version so it worked. You should not have to do anything except reinstall the other versions and they will continue to work fine.

@jetdv - I have a 2-part question while we are on this subject. After I uninstalled Vegas Pro 16, 18, and 19 (I only have VP-17 and VP-20 installed now on my Windows 10 PC), I went to my C-Drive with File Explorer to look at my VEGAS main folder. When I opened it up, the folders that still remain are all of them which are Vegas Pro 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. My question is (1) WHY are the folders for VP-16, VP-18, and VP-19 still there after I uninstalled them? And (2) How are these plugins set up, for example, when a newer version of Vegas Pro is installed, is the newer version dependent on the older Vegas Pro's plugins in order to work? Or does each new version of Vegas Pro have its own set of plugins? It's kind of confusing how this works regarding plugins especially when you buy additional plugins AFTER each new version of Vegas Pro is installed.

The folders are mostly empty but have things like presets in them- if you ever reinstall them those versions of Vegas will retain memory of how you used those versions. You can delete the folders if you like.

The few plugins I have need to be in the installed folder of each version of Vegas so when I get a new version I download a newer installer or manually copy them over.

@Debbie-Whitmer This isn't really a VEGAS problem. It has happened to me on 18.

It's quite simply the risk that comes with a software allowing you to maintain multiple versions of the same product.

This is one of the reasons of why other publishers simply opt to make the newer version overwrite the old one; while in your case, each VEGAS version builds a new directory and once every often could potentially lose the plugin folder. Windows is a bit of a flaky beast in that regard.

One of those quirks, I'm afraid.

@Mohammed_Anis - Thank you for responding. That is a good point that you make. If you have followed this conversation, when I did a reset on Vegas Pro 19, and I reset all the rest of the older versions as well, by holding down the CTRL and SHIFT keys while double-clicking the executable file, it fixed the problem quite nicely on all those older versions and I was good to go! This was the first time that I have run into this particular problem but, fortunately, there was an easy fix! Again, thank you for your comments. They are greatly appreciated.

@Debbie-Whitmer, the plugins you fixed are the "common" plugins. For example, you indicated issues with NewBlue plugins. Those plugins are installed into c:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins - a common location for installing OFX plugins that many different programs see.

Anything installed in that folder are also seen by VEGAS. When you updated the NewBlue plugins, it updated that common folder. So the "cached" information in the old versions was now out of date. By clearing the cache and forcing it to cache again, it updated to the new versions.

Some plugins are in the version specific folders. Those plugins are seen only by that version of VEGAS. So you don't need to worry about other versions of VEGAS losing anything if you remove the folder from a version you uninstalled. But if you choose to reinstall those versions, I'd leave the folders and just install.

rraud wrote on 8/20/2022, 10:21 AM

When uninstalling Vegas (and most other applications) the default uninstaller leaves behind folders, registry entries and other data. If one one wants to remove this 'clutter', it can be done manually (time consuming and dangerous), or with a third-party uninstaller, I usually recommend Revo Uninstall'. However.. if multiple versions of an application are installed, it can also remove 'shared data'. So one must be extremely careful on what is removed after the initial uninstall. Fortunately Revo Uninstall has three 'scan' modes (safe, moderate and advanced), with the option to choose exactly what data files (and leftover folders) are removed. Revo Uninstall' also has a Windows cleaner (similar to CCleaner) and other useful tools. I usually recommend Revo when problems reoccur after a reinstall.
Revo Uninstall has pro and freeware versions. The free version is adequate in most cases unless a 'forced' uninstall is needed.

@jetdv - Now THAT was helpful too! It makes sense now and now I know how it works.

@rraud - Thank you so much for this information. This is the first time I have heard about "Revo Uninstall". If you have followed this entire conversation, I did a RESET on Vegas Pro 19, 18, 17, and 16 FIRST (as it was recommended here) and THEN ALL the Vegas copies I had worked just fine which was pretty amazing and I'm so glad it worked! THEN I decided to uninstall 16, 18 & 19 through Window's Control Panel to save some disk space but I retained Vegas Pro 17 and Vegas Pro 20 on my PC. I just wanted to retain Vegas Pro 17 for a little while longer because I have YEARS worth of work which were produced in Vegas 17 but, moving forward, I will start using Vegas Pro 20 as my main video program. Thus far, everything seems to be working properly. I will just leave those folders there on my hard drive of all the previous versions of Vegas Pro I had on my computer. Since everything seems to be working fine, I think to leave well-enough-alone is the best thing. Again, thank you so much for sharing because it gives more understanding how Vegas and Windows operate together. THANK YOU!
