VEGAS Pro16 trying to render a 1 hour video in 4K program hangs

I am using Vegas Studio Pro16 trying to render a 1 hour video in 4K but the program keeps stalling

I have used Vegas in its differing forms and versions for many years. At present I
have a problem with Vegas Pro 16 (Build 424). I am using Windows 10 (64-bit) and I
am trying to render a one hour long video in 4K HEVC (I have also tried other
formats). The program keeps stalling whilst rendering or gives me a system low on
memory error message. I have a computer with an I9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz  and
32,684.6Mb Ram. Surely this specification is sufficient for Vegas.

In fact, I have been working with Magix support since 1 April 2020 trying their solutions one after another. In response to a recent email I received a:-

"Thank you for your mail. Unfortunately, we can't process your request, since your ticket has already been closed. Please create a new ticket via the support form on our website: http://support.magix.net"

A singularly unhelpful reply as there now seems no way of contacting a support technician or creating a new ticket.

It would be helpful if you list the things you have tried, so that we don't double up on suggestions and things to try.

Pro16 trying to render a 1 hour video in 4K - program keeps stalling

I have, so far:

1.     Sent PRS files

2.     Installed the application to the hidden administrator profile - for troubleshooting purposes.

3.     Moved the temp folder C:\Users\Xxxx\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\16.0\.\ To an alternate drive [my “S” drive which had 2.30TB of free space - as a troubleshooting step.

3.1. I stated that a 500Gb SSD of which 120GB was used; that still left 344Gb.

The question I posed was how much storage capacity is required whilst rendering? No Answer.

3.2. I carried out this modification and checked that the location of the tmp directory had actually been changed to my ‘S” drive. I used my administrator (user) log-in and ran Vegas pro 16  as the “administrator” and tried rendering in 4K. The program hung (as usual). I sent the error reports and asked “What should I try now?”

4.       Was advised “The error reporting is still faulting an old game ready driver associated with the NVIDIA device.  Lets have you install the new studio driver from this Page:   https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/159680/en-us

4.1. I stated “I will do as you ask but (as you know) my computer is not a notebook, it is a high spec. desktop, and includes a fairly high end NVIDIA graphics card. The driver has not been identified as out of date by the Windows 10 update system. I will try installing your suggested driver and report back.

4.2.  I tried the suggested installation and replied “Still the same problem. The program will not render in 4K and either stops completely or starts flashing. Not only did I try rendering with your suggested driver but there was a new driver available, so I also tried that. Both did not work on numerous occasions!

5.       In reply I received the:

“Unfortunately, we can't process your request, since your ticket has already been closed. Please create a new ticket via the support form on our website:

http://support.magix.net”

I would be most grateful for a solution to this problem

Did you execute here a "clean install"?

The reason they recommended that driver is because it is currently the most recent version of the "Studio" driver, a class of Nvidia drivers which undergo more rigorous testing against creative applications such as video editors before being released, compared to the "Game" driver. So the Studio driver should be more reliable for rendering. But not in your case! There must be something else going on in your system.

Is your system overclocked? Have you tried a CPU/GPU stress test, such as FurMark? I know you have been using past versions of Vegas but with each update comes more demanding use of the CPU and GPU.

Here are some of my go-to steps when VP starts misbehaving...

Try:

The recommendations in the FAQ for solutions when VP is crashing.

A driver cleaning http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Make sure your cache folder is clean by deleting everything in  C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\<version #> (delete everything with VP closed and use task manager to make sure it's really gone from memory). The initial startup will be kind of long after this cleaning but once it's up, restart VP. Use task manager to make sure VP is completely gone from memory before starting it back up.

Try these tips too

Disable so4compoundplug.dll if videos are AVC https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/avc-xavc-s-issues-in-vp15-16-try-disabling-so4compoundplug-dll--108345/

Trim your project looking for fx combinations that cause problems.  For example, Picture in Picture and Layer Dimensionality together are lethal on my machine

Also, run task manager and keep an eye on GPU and system memory use when running.

System 1:

Windows 10
i9-10850K 10 Core
128.0G RAM
Nvidia RTX 3060 Studio driver [most likely latest]
Resolution        3840 x 2160 x 60 hertz
Video Memory 12G GDDR5

System 2:

Lenovo Yoga 720
Core i7-7700 2.8Ghz quad core, 8 logical
16G ram
Intel HD 630 gpu 1G vram
Nvidia GTX 1050 gpu 2G vram

So many suggestions! Thank you.

AS-Vegas wrote on 6/8/2020, 11:44 AM

I was not expecting such a quick response. I regret I am a little slower in my actions.

j-v - Screenshot to follow. Yes I carried out a clean install.

KenB - No my system is not overclocked. I will try  a CPU/GPU stress test and report back.

michael-harrison - I will carry out a driver cleaning and work on your other suggestions

Thanks everyone!

What kind of cooling do you have? Are you checking your temp say after 30 minutes of rendering?

AS-Vegas wrote on 6/8/2020, 4:18 PM

Hi D7K,

I have a Corsair liquid cooled system. I haven't checked the temperature but the problem occurs within 15 minutes of starting the rendering process.
