Vegas refuses to use FPS1 codec, since saturdays Windows update!

Vilo_le_Loup wrote on 12/14/2017, 5:56 PM

Hello boys and girls,

I got a big problem which I have tried to solve for hours and days now. On tuesday alone, I spend 10 hours continuously in solving the problem ... with no success. I think I pretty much read every Google link, if it was just a bit similar to my problem! I'm rly on the verge of despair. So I decidet to make this community account. Sry if I bother you with my stuff. Btw ... my english is not the best, so pls be lenient. I try to explain what I'm going through.

The first thing I must say is that I never ever .... EVER ... got a problem like this. Not for one single second! But on saturday, my Windows 10 made a rly big update. It felt more like a new installation.

After it ... Vegas absolutley stoped importing videos with the FPS1 codec (FRAPS). I'm kinda good with pc things an I know, that (normaly) I just have to install the codec. But the codec IS on the system (I re-installed the codec as well), but Vegas just ignores that fact. No other programm has I problem with it! So I got a lots of AVI videos now (with the FPS1 codec), wich getting showed as "Unknown" in Vegas and when I trie to open them ... Vegas complains about the codec and not beeing able to open the codec.

I ryl, rly wouldn't say a thing, If this would not have worked before ... but like I said! I never ever had problems like this before at all. I have never seen such an error message or the AVI videos getting showed as "Unknown"! NEVER!

I even tried it on my secondary pc, which has Windows 7 installed and it works with not a single complain. But main pc ... nope!

It's like I said. All starts with the Windows update on Saturday. Vegas is refusing to use the installed FPS1 codec. It's not even trying ... with some kind of video glitches or something like that. No ... just not opening them at all.

So I even tried different (trial) Versions of Vegas. Like 13 oder 15. Its the same everytime! At least on my main PC.

So ... what can I do now!? It's so unbelievably frustrating! Like someone cursed my pc! It doesn't makes sence at all. From nowhere! From one day to the other like: "Sry! No more FPS1 AVI's import for you!" For no reason!

The VFW dll "frapsvid.dll" for the FPS1 codec is installed ... Vegas is just not using it! I also tried to install some other VFM codec for example the "ffdshow" without changing anything! Is there a way to show Vegas to codec or something like that?

Like I said at the beginning. I'm rly on the verge of despair now and I'm so backed up in terms of my video releases ...

I rly hope there is somebody who is able to help me or give me some info at least. Maybe it's just a little thing ... or maybe a known glitch in combination with the new Windows update ... but I rly need some help!

Thank you!

Do you have an "Europe-country" (windows-N) localized version? If so you may need to download the missing media feature pack for windows-N (this is a consequence of one of anti-monopoly laws imposed on Microsoft by European ruling). Every time there is a windows update you may need to do this. Sometimes this helps with sound and codecs...

A what!? Ahm ... I got:

"German" Windows 10 Pro

Version 1709

Build 16299.125

if you have an "N" version, it should show in the windows version name if you view the basic information (windows edition) > control panel > system and security > system

Another way of finding this out, that is you are missing the windows media player (and some other stuff).

The language has nothing to do with it.

So no ... I don't got a "N" Version ...

I tried to make some random testing, to stress out Vegas a bit and I searched for some of my oldest videos on my archive. Most oft them are able to get imported in Vegas but there are some, with similar problems. Like a AVI Video with the Codec "WMV3" ... or another one with the codec "cvid". There are all playable with my normal WMP and "GSpot" says "Codec installed" ... but Vegas rejects it....

Does this information help a bit?

Vilo_le_Loup wrote on 12/15/2017, 2:18 PM

OMG I DID IT! I SOLVED IT !!!! HOLY SH...!!! I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!

Maybe you are interested in what I did!?

I always thought to myself ... maybe there is a 32/64bit problem. I looked at my Windows 7 pc and there was a file called "frapsv64" in the "System32" folder. I copied it and brought it to my main pc, but it doesn't help.

I was kinda bored and I thought: "Fu... it. I try another new installation of FRAPS". So I de-installed FRAPS again ... I think it was the 5th time or something like that ... and for the first time, I also deleted the file named "frapsvid.dll" from the folder "SysWOW64" by hand.

While the installation was running, I think I noticed something about a "frapsvid.dll 32bit" and "frapsvid.dll 64bit". After the installation I got "frapsv64.dll" in the "System32" folder (for the first time I think) and a frapsvid.dll in the "SysWOW64" folder (as usual). I started Vegas with absolutely no hope AND IT WORKED!

Can someone maybe explain me that!? In combination with the Windows Update, the fact that I re-installed FRAPS multiple times before, etc.

Vilo_le_Loup wrote on 12/15/2017, 2:50 PM

I can not explain it, but have an advice.

Uninstall frapss and never install it again . . . very bad software for capturing video but excellent for those who like to use cracked software.!

Why you think it's a bad software for capturing? I got pretty good results with it and I rly like it! And what did you talk about cracked software? What has this to do with it at all?? What are you trying to say? oO

Vilo_le_Loup wrote on 12/15/2017, 3:07 PM

Why you think it's a bad software for capturing?

My long time experience and I never saw it adviced at serious and payed Edit software Apps.

If you don't like FRAPS it's one thing and I got no problem with that, it's your personal opinion, but don't put me in the same reference with people who use cracked software! To be honest ... I find your insinuations pretty offensive.

I only gave a personal advice based on my own experience and I know what I wrote.
What you like to read behind the lines is up to you and if you read insinuations it is your reading and it are your thoughts, not mine.
And if you like it or not , this is my last comment on this subject.

I read nothing behind lines, your statement was directly enough. I wish you a good evening anyway Sir!

Thanks for sharing the solution of FRAPS issue as you found it...

I personally don't use Fraps for my screen recorder (I use OBS Studio or Radeon Relive! if I need to), so can't give opinion of Fraps, but I'm sure your advice can be helpful to any other Fraps users out there.

Thanks buddy! I never used OBS but I heard about it ... I think famos "Let's Players" from germany (for example Gronkh) started with FRAPS as well and switched to OBS in the meantime. So I think I check it out or search for a review on YouTube. I think it's even able to stream your videos, isn't it!?

Correct, you can do streaming with it, although there are some complexity there which I haven't been solve yet (like unsync audio after many times), but have better result when using X-Split.

Well - OBS is opensource and you can customize your screen compositing (add with other image elements if you wish). Some says it is heavy application, but I feel fine with it.
