Vegas Studio 10

I used Vegas Studio 10 until now, but i upgraded my pc a month ago, switching to a solid-state hard drive and to Windows 8 (previously i was using WinXP).

In the meantime i purchased Movie Studio 13 but did not liked it the interface, so i re-installed Studio 10. I worked on a small project over a week ago without problems, but now it did'nt work anymore. yesterday and today Studio 10 did not even start when i clicked on the icon.
I tried to re-install, it start but as soon as i load a project it freezes...

it might be some issue with Windows 8?

How large is your hard drive and how much free, clean, defragmented space is on it?

New computers are full of fragmented files. And, on a somewhat full drive, this can choke a lot of programs that need to use a lot of hard drive space to fully deploy.

I had some issues with Movie Studio 10 a while back ( now resolved, thanks to Sony Creative here ).
However, it required a visit to my PC dealer who washed out the Registry and probably other places. At the same time I added an extra drive for "Projects" as the second HDD was getting rather full.
All the software seems to push itself onto the C-drive, including dubious entries in the registry - often with similar names so you need to be eagle-eyed to spot those that a needed and those that are "surplus" (or refer to the other deleted version ).

One can't help but think MS Win is a bit sloppy in the way it works, otherwise the uninstall would do just that. Yes, I know Win is suffering from "Legacy" and that there are millions of programs pushing their way into the Registry - but that's why I pay MS for software that's only slightly better than the last version - and I expect it to perform very well.

If OP is dissatisfied with v13, why not try a retail/discounted v12? - but do keep the Royalty-free music on v10 - IMHO that was superior and I doubt it's legal to resell v10. and as I still use v10 I hoped v13 would be better. I'm not convinced that folk really need small-screen (touch-screen) tech - when I'd prefer a more-sensible arrangement of v10/v12 - some improvements in Text would be nice - anyone that's familiar with print would be shocked by the clunky controls for Movie-Studio Text - I frequently add tiny gaps to improve layout, but it's time-consuming even compared with DTP software in the early days of Win.

I note too that this Forum has only just added HTML-like formatting - that's good, so thanks, but it has taken too long -
MODERATORS:-perhaps an Article on using these effects would be helpful?

OP may need to get that Registry cleaned.
Hope that helps.

Well my SSD (where both Studio 10 and Studio 13 are installed) iss 111gb with 60gb free.
The video files are on an external drive with 1tb of total space and 314gb free, both defragmented (0% fragmented) those days

@UKharrie, i thought of purchasing Studio 12 after seeing the new 13 interface. I'd say that if i did know it i would not have probably upgraded...

It seems that i resolved uninstalling, and reinstalling Vegas10, this time on a completely diffrent directory (rather than the default one). The prblem was caused (i think) from some things and settings shared with Studio 13.

Note that with modern file systems, while space is definitely a concern, fragmentation is a completely obsolete and dead topic. Your drive can be so fragmented it looks like a shuffled deck of cards an will still behave perfectly fine with no noticeable effects at all.

Defragmenting is not only NOT helpful in the slightest, it's extra wear and tear on your drive and risks damaging the data. Don't do it.

UKharrie,

Did you clean the registry yourself, have someone else do it, or use a program?

If you used a program, which one did you use?
