Very low rendering quality of proxy videos.

Hi. I'm very new to using Vegas Movie Studio; I just installed Vegas 15 on a 30 day trial. It looks like the app I need but I do have one problem which may be a complete show stopper.

I've imported some 4K video clips into my project (h264, shot from a mavic air). Immediately Vegas has worked through and built proxy files. So-far so-good.

When I select these clips they preview with very high resolution, but when I add them to my timeline and press play the render at such low quality that it's going to be a problem editing the video.

Has Vegas build very low proxy files? If so, why? and how can I rebuild them at a more reasonable resolution?

The proxy files are 1080p24, which is quite a nice resolution for previewing. Probably your preview is still set to preview auto (default setting), which gives a good quality when previewing 4K but a low quality when previewing proxies. To preview the proxies in a good quality, set the preview to preview full.

Sounds likely. Care to tell a newby where to find this setting?

Okay got it. Options, Preferences, Video (tab), "Display at project size."

It's even easier, at least on MS14 directly on the preview window you have a menu (on top by memory, don't have the application open right now) where you can select the resolution even while the movie is running.

I don't see it in V15. Unless being in the free trial his disabled it or something. But no matter.

@couling right-click above the Preview window to see the menu and select "Show Toolbar".

@vkmast are we talking about the same version of the app? Right clicking above the preview does nothing (no menu). right clicking on the preview window gives a menu with no "Show Toolbar" option.

Interestingly, right clicking on the preview does give a "preview quality" submenu.

OK, I see that you don't have the VMS 15 Platinum, just the basic version which lacks many features. My screenshots are from the Platinum version.
