That's right. In the trimmer right-click and Select Video (or Audio) Only, if you want to add video (or audio) only to the timeline.
You can of course delete the video (or audio), when the clip is an event on the timeline. Dun.

The problem I've been having with the latest version (and I think this is what the original post meant) is that even when you select Video Only, it doesn't work and always creates the clip with the video AND audio. It doesn't seem to matter what you pick, it just ignores the selection and always includes both. It can be worked around but it's quite frustrating. Is this a bug perhaps?

Yes, it does create a clip with video and audio in Project Media.
If you drag your selection (with video only) from the trimmer to the desired track, your selection becomes a new event on the track with video only.
Been the same in v10 and v11.
