Wrong Aspect Ratio or bars in 16:9 PAL with MP4

Hi,

Movie Studio HD Platinum 10
Windows 10
UK (PAL)
Imported files from Canon EOS M
1920x1080
Field Order: None (Progressive)
Pixel Aspect 1.0000 (Square)
Frame Rate: 23.976 (IVTC Film)

I'm trying to render out with MP4, These are my main settings:
Video Format: AVC
High Def: 1280x720 (I'm reducing down from 1080 to save space, but I have similar issues with render at 1080 too)
Allow Source to adjust frame size (not ticked)
Profile: Baseline
Entropy coding: CAVLC
Frame rate: 23.976
Allow source to adjust frame rate (not ticked)
Field order: None (Progressive)
Pixel Aspect ratio: 1.0000
Bit rate: 10,000,000

When I render with these settings and playback I find that the video is stretched horizontally to 1706x720? When I check the properties is Windows, it says correctly 1280x720.

I thought maybe the pixel aspect was out, so I changed this to 1.333 this fixed the aspect, but added vertical bars down the sides in addition to the 16:9.

Essentially It's never 16:9, but always wider unless I render with .mpg.

I also tried Main Concept mp4 but that had the same issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jay.

I've never heard of this.

You've got your Video Project Properties set to Match Media, right?

Meantime, the program includes high-def AVC templates from both Main Concept and Sony. If you're having trouble with one, have you tried the other?

Your PAR (pixel aspect) is 1.0, not 1.333.
Your initial issue sounds like a player problem.

It's odd, I thought it might be a player problem too, but I tested it on VLC and also the default player in Windows 10 app, but the same result.

I downloaded some sample footage with similar specs, i.e. 23.9 fps, mp4, 1280x720. It plays fine in both players, but when I imported it into Movie Studio and rendered it with Sony Mp4 at similar settings and the same 1280x720, the movie plays back stretched. Each say in file info thought that they are indeed 1280x720.

Makes me wonder what details the players receive to display the aspect wrong when the media info is correct.

I converted each file though Anvsofts "Any Video Converter" and matched the settings, i.e. kept all settings and probably just changed the bit rate and all comes out fine - no problems with the aspect at all.

I'm wondering if there is a bug in the Sony Mp4 Movie Studio 10? I've a new version of Movie Studio coming in the post shortly, maybe I'll find out for sure then.

I decided to be a bit inventive.

I installed Movie Studio 13 Trial and tried rendering with that, all worked fine, yay!

I then saved the template which luckily is carried over to my older Movie Studio 10.

Even though it matches the original template exactly, it works fine in Movie Studio 10 without any aspect issues.

So I wonder what is amiss?

I tested loads of templates with this error in Movie Studio 10 and all the mp4 settings had the same issue. But using one created from a new version worked. Very odd.

I purchased version 12 yesterday (because I don't like the new interface in 13), so I hope whatever is the issue will be gone in that version - fingers crossed.

I tested a similar (I believe) EOS M file in MSPlatinum 12. The quick test seems OK there and in MSP 13 as well.
Similar issues to yours with MSP 10.
Btw, do you have a typing error in your last post/fourth line?
