Before I buy Vegas Pro 18

Before I buy Vegas Pro 18, I need to know, FOR SURE, if Vegas Pro 18 will support (1) NewBlueFX Filters 5 Ultimate, (2) Transitions 5 Flow, and (3) Transitions 3 Ultimate that I already have which all work with Vegas Pro 17.  Again, does Vegas Pro 18 support ALL of the aforementioned NewBlueFX plugins?

Download the 30 day trial as that's the only way you will find out for sure if it will support your FXs on your system.

@Debbie-Whitmer  Vegas Pro 18 supports all plugins that support V17, however it is still best to try before you buy. Download the trial version.

Hello, I really need help for Vegas Pro 18.

I purchased Vegas Pro 18 on August 8, 2020, and it simply is not working for me.  There are so many problems and if these things are not resolved, then I will have to get a refund.  I have been using Vegas for years and I love the program but this time around has not been a good experience.  I currently use Vegas Pro 17 and it works just fine for me and I understand that all of my configurations for 17 were imported into Vegas Pro 18 so I do not understand why all of these problems are happening as in the following:

1.    My video preview on my external monitor only produces a black screen and even does not have the [ESC button to exit instructions] to get out of it.  When attempting to get out of the black screen, it crashes with the white screen every time.  In my preferences, I do have my “Preview Devices” in Vegas set where it should be at “2 1920 x 1080 (60)” to go to the external monitor.  If I change it to “1 1920 x 1080 (60)” then it works by going to my main monitor but then I cannot see Vegas at all to edit the tracks.  And that is not where it should go anyway; it’s meant for an external monitor.  I updated my video drivers hoping for a solution to this but to no avail. I saw a user on the Vegas Pro 18 in the help forum having the same exact problem so I know I’m not the only one having this problem.

2.    My NewBlueFX plugins “Transitions 5 Flow” and “Transitions 3 Ultimate” which specifically has the ZOOM plugin within it that I have used for hundreds of projects will not work at all.  They are registered with NewBlueFX and show up in the NewBlueFX App Manager but they do not work in Vegas Pro 18.  When I drag down ZOOM as a selection for any video or picture on a track, Vegas Pro 18 rejects it.  The mouse turns into a O with a line through it and remains that way.  I MUST have this plugin to work and it does not work.

3.    When choosing this zoom plugin and other plugins as well under the transitions tab, something very weird happens.  The Zoom plugin has an icon picture inside the “transitions tab” that shows you how it will look by showing the letter A and how it transitions into B.  When I drag it down to the track, the entire transition screen turns into a gigantic A or B and covers the entire transitions screen!  Once this happens, there’s no way to get out of it and you must exit the program (screen shot enclosed). But before you exit out, notice that all the plugin selections disappear TOO! (see enclosed screenshot)

4.    Some of the plugins don’t even work.  Even when you drag the some of the transitions down to the track and the track will accept it, the transitions do not do what they are supposed to do.  Like “Color Wash” for example.  It show in the display to turn from green to blue but there is no action at all.  The video being played just comes up normal.

5.    As you can see in another screenshot that I have enclosed is when selecting ANY of the plugins in the transition tab, all of a sudden weird pictures are bleeding through the plugin options on the left-hand side of the screen inside the plugin selections.

These are only some of the problems I know of thus far that I have run into the moment I installed Vegas Pro 18.  What is the world is going on?  I must have the aforementioned things to work inside of Vegas Pro 18 due to the committed projects I have been working on which entails hundreds of projects.  All of these functions work perfectly inside of Vegas 17 which I’m currently using.

The following is my system information:

Processor:  AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor
4.00 GHz
Installed RAM:  64.0 GB
System Type:  Windows 10 PRO, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Video Card:  Radeon RX 580 Series
Dedicated Memory:  8171 MB
Dual Monitor Display
All video drivers up-to-date

Please help me if you can.  I look forward to your replies.

Sincerely,
Debbie Whitmer

1) "I must have the aforementioned things to work inside of Vegas Pro 18 due to the committed projects I have been working on which entails hundreds of projects."

Don't upgrade during a critical time. Wait until you don't have "committed projects" hanging over your head. Especially don't upgrade to a x.0 release.

2) Use the trial version first. You could have spent 30 days trying out VP 18 before spending money.

IMO there are way too many bugs in this release, just look at the forum, to justify upgrading while there is any work that needs to be delivered.

@Debbie-Whitmer You should have tried V18 before buying it! And as @michael-harrison said, it seems V18 still have so many bugs as so many people in the forum are having problems with it!

Maybe Magix should follow BMD and release a beta version to public for better testing and fixing most bugs before releasing the final release. BMD have been doing this for DaVinci Resolve for long time and it's been working great for them as the released version of the the software always stable and has minimum bugs!

@michael-harrison - Yes, I understand what you are saying. I do have Vegas Pro 17 which works just fine so I can still depend on that right now. And I agree with you about the many bugs regarding this first release. For me, Vegas Pro 18 is unusable the way it currently is. But there was still hope that there may be something easy to correct the situation, lol But thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated. I'll see what others will say as well if they have anything to offer as to a possible fix. Thx again michael!

Debbie - I take it you're a professional, but incase you overlooked this.

Have you considered using "Check for Driver Updates" found in the Help Menu?

What you're reporting feels sort of related to a Driver problem, as I've experienced similar symptoms prior to an update.

D7K wrote on 8/10/2020, 10:22 AM

Lots of different things can cause this. My setup works fine with dual monitors but I run one monitor from the motherboard (1080) and the other a 4K from my AMD480 8 Gig. What have you tried to make these work? Did you do a clean install? What version of Windows 10 are you running? List your trouble shooting efforts (most issue reported are a combination of hardware and other software causing issues). Read the posts and see what "fixes" others have used.

@D7K - Yes, I had a clean install of Vegas Pro 18. The only thing I saw that was different that I had never seen Vegas do before was that while the "Acoustic Mirror Impulse files" were installing, it suddenly dropped to my subdirectories for me to browse a folder I wished to save these files to. I thought that was odd during installation. I noticed at the top the pathway it was already at the "PC/documents" subdirectory by default so I just left it there and clicked the "OPEN" button and then it proceeded with the installation process. But other than that unusual thing, it installed perfectly clean. Thank you for responding.

@Debbie-Whitmer, yes ALL NewBlue plugins are supported in Vegas Pro 18.

@Debbie-Whitmer Firstly, your point number 2. I have NewBlue Total FX 360 which, among the other transitions you mentioned, has the Zoom transition. You're right, if you pull this transition down between two overlapping events you do, indeed, get the 'no entry' sign. This may be a bug but you can get around this by right-clicking after selecting the overlap and selecting 'Transition/Insert Other' from the context menu. You can then choose Zoom from the Plug-in Chooser, click Ok and go on from there. That works for me.

Regarding your point number 1. I don't know what the issue is with your setup but I have a second monitor and I don't use the 'Video Preview on External Monitor' option. I have un-docked the Video Preview window and moved it over to my second monitor. I then resized it to fill the display then saved my Window Layout in 'View/Window Layouts/Save Layout As'.

As regards the other points, I'm not experiencing any of the issues that you're describing. Your first step should be, as @Mohammed_Anis suggests, to check for driver updates.

EDIT. I was writing the above when others were responding to you, so I missed that you'd already checked your driver status.

@Jack S - Hi Jack! Yes, I knew about undocking the Video Preview Window and sliding it over to my other monitor. However, by doing that, it then it removes the video preview in the smaller display that is directly in front of me above the tracks and there's a good reason for me to have that smaller display in front of me. For example, along with a single video that I am doing post production on for a radio broadcast (as the broadcaster is also being videoed during the broadcast), I also do the same type of video with different angles using different cameras (when he uses different cameras) and then I record a really good copy of the audio directly from live streaming from their Web Site. So I may be dealing with 3 different audios that are out-of-sync so I have to adjust those audios first before I begin editing the video for other things. By having the smaller video preview display directly in front of me, I can see the broadcaster's mouth in my peripheral vision and don't have to keeping looking at the smaller visual display directly in front of me too much by raising my eyes and looking back down at the tracks all the time which can slow me down through the editing process. But with the video display undocked and over to my 2nd monitor, it makes it harder for me to see the broadcaster's mouth which would inevitably slow me way down and take longer to finally get to rendering the project. But I do use the 2nd monitor a lot for different situations.

I will have to give that a try of your advice regarding your ZOOM suggestion in getting it to work! You know with computers, there's always more than one way to do the same thing so I will definitely check it out!! Thank you so much for responding! I greatly appreciate it very much!

@Debbie-Whitmer I think I understand what you're describing. If you mean that you prefer the smaller preview window while you're synching up the audio, but want the larger window while you're editing (after synching the audio), you can do what I do. I have Titler Pro 7 which opens up as a plug-in on my second monitor. This, of course replaces my preview, and when I switch back to VP18 the preview comes back but then I can't see my Titler pro 7 window. To remedy this I have two window layouts saved. One where the preview window is on my second monitor and the other one is the default window layout where the preview window is in its default position. I can then switch back and forth between the layouts using the keyboard shortcuts for each layout. Maybe that method would help you (until you get the  'Video Preview on External Monitor' option working).

@Jack S - Guess what?? Just like you said, I got the ZOOM plugin to work with the work-around the way you suggested!!! Yay!!! But this is what I had to do. You know you can add the ZOOM option to any video at the beginning of it as an intro or at the end of a video as an outro which is what I do without overlapping any other video with it. That is the only way I have ever used this particular plugin which I use all the time. However, I went ahead and tried adding another small video in order to overlap the two videos together as you said. That overlapping causes the "Transition" option to show up in the drop down menu when you right click the videos where it overlaps otherwise, the transition option does not show up, at least it did not for me. But anyway, as I was saying, I overlapped the two videos and only selected the one video I wanted ZOOM to affect. Once I went to the "transition/insert other" option on the drop down menu and selected ZOOM, it imported correctly and then I removed the other video I did not want and the ZOOM plugin went at the beginning of the video I wanted it to be on!!! Wow! Magix really needs to fix this so it can be done the normal way but THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the interest and the time to help me work this out. You've made me a happy camper today!! LOL At least that's 1 problem fix with at least 4 more to go!! THANKS Jack!! :D

@Debbie-Whitmer I'm glad you got some kind of workaround, but I agree, it's a lot of messing about just to get a transition at the start and end of a clip. I'm not sure whether it's a VEGAS issue or a NewBlue one though. I'll have another play around to see if it's just isolated to this one transition.

I made a video for the technician at NewBlueFX demonstrating what was happening but the video was too big to send. So I took two snapshots from the demo video and sent him those. Thx again!

@Jack S - I just found out another work-around to make the ZOOM plugin work within "Transitions 5 Flow" or "Transitions 3 Ultimate" or the one you mentioned as well. This came directly from Edward @ NewBlueFX when I informed NewBlueFX it was not working with the regular "drag and drop" method He said:

"Ok, I just tested it and it does work in Vegas Pro 18. However, I was not able to drag and drop it on the crossfade. I'm not sure why. However, I did find a workaround - drag some other transition to the crossfade, in the dialog that opens click on the "f+" button on the right hand side at the top, and then double-click on the NewBlue zoom transition. That will properly add it to the transition and you can then pick the desired preset. I will report this too."

And it works!!

@Debbie-Whitmer There's another way to do it. If you right-click on the video track header and select Expand Track Layers

then left-click on the Transition Properties icon,

you can then select the Zoom transition in the Third Party folder, click OK then select your desired preset and close the dialog box.

+1 @Jack S. I also see the bug  Edward @ NewBlueFX (=jetdv) mentions, quoted by the OP above your comment.
