Check your buttons along the top of the preview screen especially the "Split Screen" one.

Which version and build of VMS are you using?

There's a later build 223 which should be available from your Magix account or here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-17-update-4-builds-178-223--130282/

As for the buttons

If you don't see the Toolbar that @EricLNZ refers to, right-click on the Preview window and check "Show Toolbar".

See also this FAQ, esp. point 1.

ok, so now I have updated to build 223 and I have chosen for all buttons to be visible. Thank you for the suggestions but no luck thus far

...so it appears that the issue has something to do with an area I selected with the cross hairs that appear on the preview screen when the cursor moves over it. I apparently at some point must have selected the entire screen, because when I just selected to draw a small box in one corner of the screen, that small area shows the image prior to the effect added while the rest of the screen reveals a preview of how the image will appear when it renders. I still seek more information about the uses of these cross hairs but for the most part my issue is resolved.

What cross hairs? What exactly are you doing? Applying a Video FX? If so which.

I was using the cookie cutter effect to create a mask in order to compensate for my inability to fine tune my greenscreen effect when I noticed crosshairs as the cursor moved across. The screen. I have hundreds of hours, possibly thousands of hour using Vegas. But how this happened originally and why it carried over through various projects I've worked on remains a mystery to me.
