Constant crashes

christian-hays wrote on 8/23/2023, 10:01 AM

I've been using vegas for about 9 years now and I'm currently using sony vegas pro 20, But I've always had issues with the software crashing while doing basic timeline editing, it doesn't seem to have if I only have a short clip with basic edits or long clips with lot of edits I still keep crashing and if I try to render anything thats longer than like 10-15 minutes the software crashes, I've looked online and did all the tips and tricks I could find and I still don't have a fix for the problem. I've checked to make sure all my software for pc and for vegas are updated, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, as well as the the afor mentioned tips and tricks. What do I need to do to make the software work so I can actually video edit so I don't have to make the switch to premier because if I can't get a fix for this I don't think I can continue using this software anymore or buy any future versions. I've also sent in plenty of crash reports as well.

This post is too vague to help you. Please start with hardware (CPU, GPU model) and media at a minimum. What triggers a crash? When you hit "show problem details" in the crash report what does it say?

There's no one generic cause for crashes.

I would suggest undoing all the various tricks or tips you found online with a reset.

gpu ryzen 9 3950x 16-core processor, gtx 4090, 128gb memory, about 2TB of free SSD Storage. The crashes lately haven't been giving me a crash report for some reason, so I Don't know what is causing it. I Did try resetting it by uninstalling and reinstalling the software which actually caused more problems so I reused the tips and tricks and it works a bit better with them.

is there any way you can look at the past reports I've sent in under this account or is that something you don't have access to?

I've been using vegas for about 9 years now and I'm currently using sony vegas pro 20,

And you missed that about 9 years ago Vegas was taken over by Magix? So there's no Sony Vegaspro 20!

To the point, Most people who still name Vegaspro Sony Vegas are mostly non registered users.

I am registered as you can see by my username and that I said earlier the error reports are in my registered ID, Don't Worry I Spent $500 On sony vegas pro 15 back in the day and Updated It for I think It was $250 To Vegas Pro 20 about a year or so ago so if you don't have any actual helpful input then go back to reddit or somewhere else this is a help forum not a reddit post please and thank you! :)

We're just forum users, not tech support, so we can't see past error reports. For that you'd have to contact VEGAS support (but really put an email address in the reporting extra info box if you want them to be able to contact you and trace it to you. I think the error reports are anonymized for privacy).

Can you share Mediainfo as well?

Reinstalling doesn't reset VEGAS- it leaves the cache and preferences intact.

Also Sony Vegaspro 15 doesn't exist. Last Sony version of Vegas was Sony Vegaspro 13.

I couldn't figure out how to do the hard reset of the cache and preferences, The hotkeys it showed online to do it wouldn't bring up the option what are the different ways I can do a hard reset?

@christian-hays you are basically describing the exact same experience I've had with Vegas for the last ~10 years. Constant random crashes while doing basic editing work in the timeline or just whatever in the GUI. No one obvious action that causes this. Could be me just trying to open an effect tab and it crashes. Thumbnails rendering in the explorer view and it crashes. Playing the same part of the edited video from timeline for the third time and it crashes (while it worked for the first two).

List goes on endlessly.

I have also spent illegal amount of time on trying this and that fix that I find on forums and youtube and ect. Some tricks make things maybe a bit better. Hard to be sure.

But ONE thing has 100% worked for me. When I convert all of the source videos to ProRes (I use free tool Shutterencoder for that) Vegas runs virtually crash-free for me. It is obvious improvement. From almost guaranteed crash within the the first half hour to editing for many hours at a time with not a single crash. On top of that everything is so much smoother during editing as ProRes is more edit friendly codec.

I will at least never go back. The extra time an hassle of converting to ProRes prior to editing is worth it when I stop worrying about the program to randomly crash all the time.

Exxxxactly the same by me Zkuggi!
Except that i convert to Canopus HQ(X) avi... Buttersmooth editing without crash.

AVC MP4? Crashes. Sometimes even after 2 minutes after opening the project, sometime (but rarely) i can edit 1 hour without crash. Then, no respond, i have to restart Vegas.
