Docking/undocking

REALOldNick wrote on 8/20/2018, 4:40 AM

VMS 15 Build 146 Win 7 64

I cannot work out how to undock/dock windows. The only advice I have found is to click and drag on the window handle in or out of the docking area, but I am afraid this has me beat.

ANy help appreciated

Nick

From online Help (F1), Window Docking Area and Floating Window Docks:

"To dock a window, ctrl + drag it by the title bar to the docking area or a floating dock.

To undock a window, click and drag the window tab out of the docking area or floating dock.

To prevent a window from docking when you drag it, do not hold the Ctrl key.

When the Allow floating windows to dock check box on the Display tab of the Preferences dialog is cleared, windows will not dock unless you hold the Ctrl key. When the check box is selected, you can prevent a window from docking by holding the Ctrl key."

The "Window Tab" is the label at the bottom of a window.

Use View menu > Window Layouts > Default Layout, if you mess up while practising.

OK...look ....thanks for the reply, but what moron made it so obscure? Where is the window tab?...is it _in_ the docking area....there is no docking area? Why is there no the old (and accepted) undock icon/option/menu thingy.

Sorry, I am in awe of useless change.

I had the same problem initially Nick until I stopped looking for the unlocking dots and grabbed the tab at the bottom instead of the top. I think it was vkmast who put me on the right path.

Yes, history repeats itself? This and two down.

and other "tabs".

Why is there no the old (and accepted) undock icon/option/menu thingy.

From Help, What's New in version 15 of MSP: "Modern tab-based window docking controls for more intuitive docking/undocking behaviors." YMMV.

Feel with you, but the reality is, beyond very few super-basic gestures, that there's no intuitive way to do these things.. it's intuitive only if you know how to do it or it's done the same way of some other system which you're familiar with.

The best is just accept it, don't waste energy on frustration and ask here or to other knowledgeable people. It's the main reason for which once one's learned to use a NLE, he sticks with it unless there's a super-compelling reason to change.

yeah but when you do learn a product and stick with it, then it is totally and unnecessarily altered in its UI, in the name of what?....nothing I can see, just change for its sake?

To elaborate on what's in What's New in 15 (Help/Introduction), as you seem to ask, this quote from Vegas Magazine 6. March, 2018 from the Vegas team.

"One more powerful UI enhancement in VMS 15 involves dockable windows. The window tabs now hold all of the controls you need to dock, reposition, and close these windows. This makes for a far more comfortable and intuitive workflow that users know and rely on all the time for Internet browser windows. They make adjusting your docked windows much easier and more logical."

It's OK for you to make your differing opinions known here, but it's not OK (see CR #1) to call anybody a "moron" on this forum.

No I am not asking for elaboration on help. I am going back a UI I know

OK. Sorry. What a moronic thing to do, to make it so hidden.

There we go

I want to make videos, not let some other geek (saaarreeee) decide that I have to learn a complete new interface, apparently designed to keep up with the new "simplistic" (hidden if you want other than toothpaste) paradigm. I struggle with the same thing on forums: people feel that the "adventure" of using the forum overcomes the practicality of actually getting info from it.

I feel that comparing this total change of interface to suit browser windows is a ....I have no words. Vegas is supposed to be a serious interface for (faithful and dedicated) users to work _away_ from the browser youtube environment. Making it suit the browser youtube environment just seems sad, given that this new version again will be besieged by (faithful and dedicated) users asking why real faults have not been fixed.

Your attitude was aggro from the start. Your avatar is aggro....blurred bearded beglassed with cop specs. You are snide from the outset, quoting Help as if I was stupid or negligent , when I said I had seen that and was still puzzled.

Stop attacking defensively and maybe go back to actually nicely answering questions. If you have run out of patience with "stupid" questionsx, then maybe you are tired here and used up, and you need to just walk away.

I know. I have been there
