Does Vegas Pro 21 need internet access every time when started?

Ottonis wrote on 8/15/2023, 5:21 AM

Hi all,

Long time Vegas Pro user here (since Vegas Pro 13 all the way up to Vegas Post 19). I plan on upgrading to Vegas v 21 that I will install on a laptop that most of the time will not have reliable internet access. And that's the catch here: most of the time no internet connection.

So here is my inquiry: Will Vegas pro 21 require online access every time it's being started or not?

I am aware of the necessity of online-registration and online-acitivation, and this is not the problem here. The problem will be that after successful installation and activation of all the software and plugins etc., the laptop will be used for video-editing mostly in areas with no or no reliable internet access.

So, if Vegas pro is going to refuse to start every time it lacks online access, it will not be usable for me.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

No it does not (and never has).

I'm not sure of the maximum period of time you can use it without internet access- at some point (a few weeks?) it may need to check with the registration server that it still has a license.

Please see item 11 in the Forum's Vegas Pro FAQs re your question: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-faqs-and-troubleshooting-guides--104787/ There is also a link to far more detailed information about the matter..

I've just turned my laptop to Airplane mode and Vegas Pro 21 opened as expected. The only issue is that the new user manual (accessed in the Help menu) requires an online connection, but if the computer is not online, the user manual for vegas Pro 20 opens instead. But you can download a pdf with descriptions of the new features via https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-21-new-feature-descriptions--142019/ and have that on your offline computer.

Vegas Pro 21 has a trial version so you can install the trial version and test it out for yourself.

Thanks a lot for the swift reply!

According to the links the other guys provided, Vegas will try to "phone" home every two weeks, but if unsuccessful, it will not stop working.

That sounds right to me, I wasn't sure how many weeks. Enjoy using VEGAS in the field.

Thanks a lot, very helpful remarks, especially so with the possibility to download the help file and use it offline.

Just a short explanation: I have been using Vegas 19Post for almost two years now and I was irritated by the fact that it didn't want to start a few times because it could not verify a valid registration (not exact wording but similar to that)- The momemt I established a proper internet connection, Vegas started just fine.

That's what made me believe that it would need permanent internet access. However, as it seems, it might just have been a coinicidence with previously installing updates to the program that would indeed need a proper re-registration/validation over the internet.

Thanks a lot, vkmast, and I apologize for the duplicate post, I am very, very rarely here on these forums and was somehow overwhelmed by the forum structure, so I posted my initial question in a totally wrong thread, I think.

Your hint to the other answer over in the other thread was indeed very helpful, thanks again!

Best

By the way: I am totally blown away by how swift, friendly and helpful this forum is. This seems to be an "anomaly" - albeit a very good one - on the internet, as I don't remember any other place one gets helped this fast.

Just wow!

VEGAS' community is one of its strongest points. A lot of very dedicated users here that offer free help, and over the years they've gotten very good at it!

You may need to periodically allow it to phone home, I want to say once a month, but that's the only restriction I'm aware of... it may even let you keep editing for some time after that period as well, but you will need to occasionally allow it to phone home if I remember right... there should be plenty of time between required check-ins, though, assuming you're not using pro 365, the subscription service.

@Ottonis - We, this Forum, are the other official “Tool” of VegasPro.

When I first came here, twenty three years ago, I had not realised just how helpful the Forum could be and just how knowledgeable, responsive and downright supportive the Members could be to me, and others. And, after the two decades they still put up with me. I’ll admit, I’m not the sharpest tool in the NLE toolbox, however they, the Members, still show me undeservedly understanding and respectful patience. Back then, VegasVideo, VV, was totally made for me, a wanna be Film Editor, who’d been previously burnt by a bunch of rubbish, half-developed or even hardly-developed softwares, purporting to be NLEs. When I first experienced the ease with which VV could allow to get the simplest of tasks done, allowing me to experience and realise my edit decisions and creative thoughts into a Timeline, whilst Learning from those with such deep understanding of this digital craft has been rewarding, both intellectually and financially. I kid you not, could NOT have got so far without them. My obsession with this Forum is reflected in the amount of Posts I’ve made, 24,372, yeah, I know, it’s an obsession, and reflects my passion for this remarkable NLE.

@Ottonis - You’ve made a wise decision to be part of this Forum, welcome aboard. I read recently, why “Vegas”? Apologies to Michael Bryant if I’ve got this wrong, but, this was the much-needed name given to the original code, stemming from the realisation that the coders were taking a chance or gamble on its outcome, and, as it’s first outing was at the Las Vegas trade show, it still hadn’t been named. So, taking a chance, and grabbing at ideas has worked for me. Daily we take creative chances to make real our video dreams, this is at the core of VegasPro, and this core mission has sustained through two decades, long may it last.

Now, back to wrangling Z-Depth FX.
