HELP! Issues with VEGAS Instability

AaronL wrote on 4/29/2022, 10:49 AM

I recently upgraded from Vegas 17 to 19 in hopes that it would solve my woes. It did not

I am a recording artist very familiar with DAWs and audio engineering etc. I have used many types of content creation type softwares and plugins etc etc. I have never worked with something as unstable as VEGAS which crashes EVERYTIME i use it no matter how simple the project.

I do light video edit projects to support some of my work, for serious video edits I hire pros, but I need to do simpler and smaller video edit projects myself.

So my VEGAS projects are relatively simple mostly short music videos like this for a community music project I lead. (www.blissiband.com)

example video

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mqvdk28nrg93r4z/iBand%20%20grant%20app%20reel%20community%20-%20Copy.mp4?dl=0

I have NEVER been able to complete one of these short and simple projects without VEGAS crashing multiple times along the way. I will likely bite the bullet this weekend and invest time in learning Divinci, cause the constant crashing is driving me nuts.

This Morning's project had no multi-cam editing, no color correction, nothing fancy I was simpley importing several completed videos to the timeline and moving them around and changing lengths in order to make a demo reel for a presentation later today. Such a simple task VEGAS cant handle without crashing. Every clip in this project was previously rendered with VEGAS ( I have had trouble in the past when importing footage shot on iOS devices), but all the clips in todays crash were made in VEGAS.

Because I get frequent crashes no matter how simple, complex, small or large my VEGAS project is I have no idea how to troubleshoot.

(Last night, for example, seemed safe and maybe crashes got triggered when I opened the display preview on my second monitor ( not sure though), today just moving a clip on a super simple project timeline did it. )

On launching VEGAS 19.0 I get a message that an update is available if I click "update now" it will spend 20 min or so downloading the update, but it does not install it, when I try to install it it goes back downloading it again, so if some asks if I am using the very latest version of VEGAS 19 the answer is no, as it wont install ( I had the same problem with updates to 17 after a certain point this loop started happening where it downloads but wont install the update)

My system specs are copied below- I am hoping for maybe some useful trouble shooting suggestions to try before I jump ship on Vegas and invest time in learning Divinci ( which I dont really have time to do- way to busy to learn a new NLE)

Thanks for any input

VKmast I just deleted device name from my computer specs list - is that what you meant?

You seem to have deleted the private info, so it's OK now.

@AaronL Hi, when Vegas updates & takes ages, the screen goes off, it's updating in the background & will come back in a while, if you try opening Vegas before it comes back on it's own you will get the update msg again, there is a direct download link tho that is quick, somebody will post that for you i'm sure,

can you share info about the media you're using, there's a tool called MediaInfo, download it, it's free https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the View option, select all, copy & paste in a comment here,👍

First, update to 19-550: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-where-can-i-download-vegas-pro-and-other-vegas-software--104782/

Then in Vegas go to help/driver update and update to the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver.

Then I'd try to clear out any old settings with a reset.

Still have issues? Share MediaInfo for media you are using and any Fx (esp. 3rd party) and we can probably figure out what the trouble is.

@AaronL please check the Forum News > Patches > Important Posts for the Direct Download Link of the current latest build (#550) of VEGAS 19. If you can't find it it's in this post. Or find the links in the "Download" thread as @RogerS advised.

(If Chrome does not download without the workaround of copying the link text and pasting it to the browser, try that or use another browser.)

Always download VEGAS updates from this forum, using the link Roger provided above. It will download way faster and doesn't hang when installing.

Roger's advice above is solid, especially regarding GPU drivers. Never use "game ready" drivers. Only Studio... VEGAS has a handy tool in the help menu that will download the right driver for you.

This is a user-run help forum, and one of the community rules is that we don't come here just to blow off steam, so I adjusted your thread title to better align with that standard. I understand that dealing with crashes is frustrating, but we're just users like you, so you're preaching to the choir. The developers do drop in from time to time, and there's a team of beta testers around here that forward certain issues to the dev team when we cannot solve it ourselves, so you're in good hands.

One thing you can do to help is, as mentioned earlier, download the app "mediainfo" and run it on your media files you are using (by right clicking on the file and selecting "mediainfo"). Set the view to HTML (there's several views that work actually, but the default view doesn't list everything we need), copy what it says, and paste that here.

Thanks for all the help

Problems are still occurring - I now have a new project with a rendered file

I am trying to add credits that were made by a team mate in premier pro and this YT subscribe animation that I got from YT - I have put it through handbrake and tried a few different formats.

It seems to cause vegas to freeze up and crash rather reliably, why is this and how to solve?

@AaronL

I was able to open the file in Vegas 14-19 but 17 wouldn't Chromo Key the green background for some reason. Add pure green screen Chroma Key fX and convert the file(s) individually to Apple Pro Res XQ with Alpha and try that for reliability.

john_dennis wrote on 5/14/2022, 3:10 AM

The files worked well for me in Vegas 19-550.

Reyfox wrote on 5/14/2022, 3:25 AM

I can confirm what @john_dennis is saying. I was able to bring in your clips, Vegas Chroma Key, and while playback was slightly choppy at the beginning of the clip (it was over several photos on my timeline), not one crash in VP19 B550. Changing the Preview Quality to Draft>Full (or any various of Quarter in other settings), and it was smooth.
