How to NUDGE Video+Audio to other tracks with hotkey?

Ustik wrote on 1/10/2021, 5:59 AM

I have 4 tracks (1-Video,2-Audio,3-Video,4-Audio).

There are a few videos on tracks1+2. To cull them and select the best takes I want to move them between tracks and nudge them down to a lower tracks.

Upper track means "not good", lower track means "good" selections

I assigned a shortcut for nudging up and down to T(up) and G(down) keys.

When I select an event and nudge it, only the video or audio part is moving.

To select both audio+video parts I need to switch to the Selection tool, drag selection, and nudge then.

Is there a way to select both VIDEO+AUDIO with one click and nudge them up or down with one click?

Here's a video explanation:

I'm afraid this is a very old Vegas Pro bug that has not (yet) been fixed.
But maybe someone else knows a workaround.

Highlight both the video and audio tracks (it's not really all that hard to do) and drag them in one mouse 'click' down (or up) - both will move the same number of tracks that you choose. Personally, I would never want the video or audio track to automatically up/down if I moved one or the other up/down.

Yes, but you still have to highlight both video and audio tracks to move them up/down in co-ordination even if grouped.

You could always use something like the "Select Good Clips" tool in Excalibur. Or move only the video part and then use the "Restore Missing A/V" tool to bring the audio back.

I didn't read that the OP was missing an audio or video track which required 'restore'. What the OP wanted to do was to have both video and audio tracks move down tracks in co-ordination when just the video event was moved to a lower track. It is so easy to do - highlight both the video and audio events and move them down with your mouse. Easy!

It's a ton of useless clicks. I want to do it with one shortcut. When nudging left or right - both video&audio parts of the event are moving. I expect the same behavior when moving events up&down.

In my copy of the software the relevant events become highlighted after clicking Shift+G.

Dexcon wrote on 1/10/2021, 8:00 AM

Sorry, but not happening here. Grouped L / R works but not up/down - on either my desktop or laptop. Yes, it works up/down if both video and audio events are highlighted - but the OP doesn't want to take that rather simple avenue. If grouping video and audio tracks with 'G', perhaps both are being highlighted. Try highlighting just the video event and see if the associated audio event moves down when moving the video event down to a lower track.

I want to click the event and press one key to nudge down both VIDEO+AUDIO. Instead, I have to switch from the Normal edit tool to the Selection tool, select both events by drawing over them, nudge them down, and switch back to the Normal edit tool.

Hope it makes sense. Watch the video example I provided.

Walter was right, it's a bug that should be reported.

When I select an event it's already a GROUP, and should be treated by Vegas as such.

Dear Dexcon, I'm using Vegas since 2006, I know all hotkeys, I know how to modify them, I know how to use Autohotkey scripts, and a ton of advanced stuff.

What I'm asking seems to be a bug or a logical feature to be implemented.

I'm not a newbie who wishes to click the mouse to use some features inside Vegas.

I need a fast efficient workflow and asking a solution to a simple action that needs to be performed.

Dexcon wrote on 1/10/2021, 8:27 AM

You may want it, but I don't. For me, it would mean that changing a video event on a track either up or down would also mean the attached audio event is also changed from the desired audio track to another track which is inappropriately (for that audio event) configured for 2.0 or 5.1 or has other unwanted or needed track level FX.

And please don't say that I can just move the audio event up/down to where I want it each time, because on your wanted procedure, that would just mean that the video event would also move up/down on the timeline tracks.

BTW, do you not use the mouse for any editing function when using Vegas Pro?

'8' and '2' on the numeric keypad can be used to move a selected event (or selected events) up or down a track, but both the video and audio - even if grouped - still need to be highlighted in order for both the V and A to be moved using this method.

This isn't the answer that you want, but you don't have to switch to selection tool, just click on video, hold shift or ctrl down and click on audio. Now both are selected without changing tools.
According to help file 8 and 2 move "selected events". You might be able to make a macro if you have a Shuttle Contour controller that selects both for you and nudges it up and down, all with one button.

Easy!

He didn't say he was missing any. I was just saying that he could move ONLY the "video" pieces (which is what he's doing now but then having to separately move the audio pieces) and then he could use the "restore" function in Excalibur to add the audio back directly under the video pieces without needing to move them too.

But the "Extract Good Clips" tool would do what he's wanting to do without having to move anything to a new track.

I can easily select only the video part of the events and move them, and then the audio parts. But it takes extra effort and is a bad idea in many scenarios.

Let's say I muted an audio track and want the audio part of the moved event to go to that muted track.

It can mute audio instantly during playback.

But it's impossible to do in one click.

This is a bug and should be reported because by default EVENT is grouped AUDIO+VIDEO and should behave like a group.

If I was wrong - moving any event on the timeline by default would move ONLY the video or audio part (but it's not the case since version 6.0).

So, this should be reported\fixed.
