Is Vegas 18 worth it?

Cliff Etzel wrote on 9/21/2020, 6:33 PM

I've been gone for quite awhile and haven't shot video in over a year. I've been commissioned to shoot for a local Watershed Council for their celebration and I'm still using Vegas 15 Edit. I want to try and take advantage of 18 IF it's worth the upgrade. I tried to edit a simple 2 camera interview I shot earlier today in Resolve and lets just say I was about to throw a temper tantrum over how Resolve works. I fired up Vegas 15 and other than having to clear the cobwebs in my brain in certain things I was able to edit and render out a rough cut within an hour or so.

So my question is given the sale ends tomorrow - what has been the overall consensus about Vegas 18 - I currently use Vegas 15 Edit but I"m thinking of the upgrade to Vegas 18 Pro.

Any serious gotchas I should be aware of before pulling the trigger?

@Cliff Etzel - download the 30 day trial and find out for yourself how it performs for you on your system.

They are very similar. I found VP 15 had a number of GPU issues that have gotten better with the newer versions. I have 15-18 on my system, but even for fixing up old projects I use 18.

But give 18 a try with the project you are working on and see if it works happily with your system.

V18 and V12 are pretty much the same. pan/crop, velocity envelope, blend mode, 3d source motion, filter fx like a toy, and so on,

What's new is buggy motion track, crashable GPU accceleration, unimpressive HDR feature, darker but bigger interval skin, simple style transfer, buggy Coloring, and amateur color grading.

Oh, V18 disolve the problem that Vegas preview looks brighter than player and youtube.

The last three Versions have been progressively better, snappier, utilizing the GPU power better so I say definite thumbs up. How much is the upgrade sale price?

My answer as a user and developer... Gary was showing different tutorials live on Youtube with VP18 (on a creepy notebook 😁). I do not know if he would do this with VP15 or older.

Well, I'd trial Vegas 18 if Magix would actually email me a trial key... This seems to be one of the several continuing reasons why I walked away from using Vegas.

And yes, I've checked my spam folder for the last hour...

Guess it's back to Resolve 16 after all since I don't trust Vegas 15 stability to handle the size of this project.

It took about 2 hours but the trial key finally arrived...

In my view I think V18 is going to be the best yet, as with all releases there is a month or so of issues while the development team deal with the system to system variations of customers.

Also, look out for any new special upgrade offers tomorrow at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/upgrades-for-vegas-pro-and-vegas-movie-studio/ (or your territory's version of that URL).

I'm confused - I'm seeing information that seems to indicate that Sound Forge 14 has become integrated into Vegas Pro 18? Is that accurate according to this page??? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro/

vkmast wrote on 9/22/2020, 4:23 PM

SF Pro 14 is included in the purchase of VEGAS Pro 18 "classic" and Suite (not in the VEGAS Pro 18 Edit purchase).

Thank you - I wanted to make sure which version to upgrade to from Vegas 15 Edit

Cliff Etzel wrote on 9/22/2020, 4:31 PM

I noticed that Vegas Pro 18 has borrowed a similar look for their advanced color grading panel that I've never seen before. Although Resolve is powerful, It is a pain to edit with and since I'm a one person shooter/editor, I need an editor I know I can work in efficiently. I don't ever plan on using a MAC and Vegas is still hands down the most intuitive editor I've ever used. I'm hoping the stability issues with GPU have been ironed out since I upgraded last year to an nVidia GTX-1080 8GB card from an AMD RX390 4GB card that left me unimpressed with when trying to edit in Vegas 15. Vegas didn't like the card and it would crash regularly. Keeping my fingers crossed that version 18 is stable.

@Cliff Etzel ... Just in case you haven't seen it, the upgrade offer has been extended to 29 Sept:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-price-watch--109642/?page=5#ca772136

Also, if you do decide to purchase Vegas Pro 18, maybe consider Vegas Pro rather than the Edit version if the yet to be released VEGAS Prepare might be of use to you. More info on:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro/#productMenu

Prepare is also listed in the Comparison as highlighted earlier by @vkmast

And with either version with the current offer you also get SpectraLayers 7 which is itself a new release from Steinberg.

I usually get Edit but with VP18 the added value of Vegas Pro was too good for me to pass up.

Cheers

I don't think the color grading panel brings Vegas terribly close to Resolve. It's a convenient interface but missing the ability to change individual colors. I highly recommend pairing it with Graide Color Curves for far better RGB curves (of course) but also the ability to do hue vs hue, hue vs sat, hue vs luminance changes and select a range of colors quite precisely.

I find GPU support with the Nvidia 1050 far better with 18 than 15, which was frankly a disappointing mess.

AAV Colorlab can control 6 basic individual colors.

That's a good tool to have, too, especially as it is free! I use it as well, but generally prefer the precision of Graide.

I purchased Vegas Pro 18 yesterday instead of Edit to get Sound Forge Pro 14 since I was stuck using SF10 for the longest time and never really opened it. I have been using Audition 6 for audio clean up but have found I really wanted tighter integration with Vegas and it was worth the extra $50 to go the full pro version over Vegas 18 Edit -and I’m close to weaning myself off of Adobe completely sans my copy of Lightroom 6 which I’m hoping to eventually replace with Capture One.

Since my work really is shooting documentary style content, advanced color grading isn’t something I’d use like in Resolve. And I just have not been able to wrap my head around node based color correcting. There’s a valid case to be made for the Vegas editing paradigm and from what I’m seeing so far, I truly think Vegas 18 may be the version I’ve been wanting for many years as my only NLE.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed this version stays as bug free as possible and only continues to get better.

Be sure to read this thread about levels changes in 18 as you develop your workflow.

It will save you some tail-chasing later on.

This new 8 bit full level option actually makes total sense to me (Seems to be the default in Resolve and Premiere Pro) - it was something I struggled with in previous versions of Vegas where I had to keep changing settings when rendering out and I would waste renders because I would forget to change it back to Original from PC using the SeMW plugin. Now I don't have to remember this additional step before rendering.

Marco. wrote on 9/23/2020, 4:48 PM

SeMW Preview Levels does not need to be set to "Original" before rendering, this is done automatically (unless you configured the plug-in to not doing so).
