Items not found despite successful search

Tom-Lamson wrote on 12/20/2022, 6:50 PM

I had a project on C drive. The drive died but I was able to move the project directory to another drive (I:). I tried to open the project but it reported that none of the MOV files could not be found. I used the search and was able to locate all of the missing files on the I: drive. When I hit OK it reported that none of the files were found. They appear in the timeline as (Media offline) See attachment.

Why didn't the successful search for the missing files work?

Movie Studio Version 17 build 223

@Tom-Lamson It's the sign you should get VP18 for $25

@Tom-Lamson Did the files work okay with build 223 before your drive died?

Tom-Lamson wrote on 12/21/2022, 12:41 PM

Yes, project worked OK before. Update: I'm not sure if I ever opened it with Version 17.

DMT3 wrote on 12/21/2022, 12:53 PM

Can you move the files to the original location?

Tom-Lamson wrote on 12/21/2022, 1:39 PM

I copied the directory to the original location. Even though the path was correct I had to navigate to the location and select the same file as a "replacement" file. I got a new "unsupported format" error this time. Also I just noticed that both error messages said "an error occurred while trying to open a project from a previous version." I'm not sure what version I used to create the original movie.

What "format" are those files? What is the mediainfo information?

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Have you installed QuickTime and is QuickTime turned on under Options - Preference - Deprecated Features? I'm guessing those files probably require QuickTime to be properly read.

Tom-Lamson wrote on 12/21/2022, 3:20 PM

Installing and enabling Quicktime fixed it! Thanks jetdv

Installing and enabling Quicktime fixed it!

You're lucky as the Quicktime plugin is broken in Movie Studio Platinum 17 build 223. But QT is only necessary for MOV files where the Format ID is identified as JPEG or PNG encoded video. It is not needed for MOV h.264/AVC encoded import. So I wonder what's in your mov files?

Yep, Image Sequence MOV files require QuickTime...

EricLNZ wrote on 12/21/2022, 6:22 PM

@Tom-Lamson Amazing. Are you sure you are opening them in Movie Studio Platinum 17 build 223? The QT plug-in initially worked in the first builds of 17 but got broken later (probably build 221) whilst the Vegas team fixed another audio import problem. Unfortunately the QT issue didn't get attended to before VMS was discontinued. It's a known problem and not just me.

Tom-Lamson wrote on 12/21/2022, 8:10 PM

Yep, Version 17 build 223.

On a separate note I purchased Movie Studio 2023 Platinum and it crashes when trying to open this vf file. It opens and plays another project that uses an mp4 files but pan and zoom don't seem to work. Any thoughts?

You may wish to also post the Movie Studio 2023 question on MAGIX's Movie Studio forum at https://www.magix.info/us/video-forum/movie-studio/ as it is there that you are more likely to get MS23 users who are former Vegas MS users who may have encountered the same problem with .vf projects. Please note that MS23 is a completely different product to the now discontinued Vegas Movie Studio product; MS23 is a MAGIX product and is not part of the Vegas family of products.

BTW, MS23 Platinum should open a .vf project as .vf is one of the project types listed in its File/Open menu:

Unfortunately, I don't have any .vf projects to run a test.

My understanding is that MS2023 will not properly open VMS vf files. It will only import clips with their cuts and not anything else. So trying to open vf files that are anything other than very basic is a waste of time.

READ FIRST: Movie Studio 18 vs. VEGAS Movie Studio

That post from the admin applies also to all later MAGIX Movie Studio products (2022, 2023). The products are supported at https://www.magix.info/us/video-forum/movie-studio/

So, further questions re the MAGIX MS product there please.
