MP3s using wrong codec VEGAS Pro 17

FRW wrote on 4/22/2023, 8:40 PM

MP3 files are invisible when using the "Import Media" button. I can drag-import them, however, the audio is just loud screeching with fully-maxed waveforms.

Doing a bit of research on these forums & elsewhere has lead me to believe the issue is VEGAS using the "mcplug2" codec instead of "mp3plug2", however, I cannot force it to use the correct codec.

I've done every potential solution listed on these forums (reinstalling, factory-resetting with ctrl&shift launch, making admin account and copying files over, etc.)

Thing is, VEGAS was handling mp3s just fine earlier today and only started having these issues after a reinstall to fix a different issue (clicking "Render As" just instantly crashed VEGAS.)

Also, when using a separate Admin account (net user administrator /active:yes), VEGAS imports mp3s perfectly fine.

OS is Win 10 Home, 19045.2846

If you have Sound Forge Audio Studio installed, there has been a history of it causing some MP3 problems including screeching audio.

Please see the workaround here.

Some years ago, I had to do this workaround with Sound Forge Pro.

Cameras: Sony FDR-AX100E; GoPro Hero 11 Black Creator Edition

Installed: Vegas Pro 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 & 22, HitFilm Pro 2021.3, DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.0.3, BCC 2025, Mocha Pro 2025.0, NBFX TotalFX 7, Neat NR, DVD Architect 6.0, MAGIX Travel Maps, Sound Forge Pro 16, SpectraLayers Pro 11, iZotope RX11 Advanced and many other iZ plugins, Vegasaur 4.0

I don't have Sound Forge installed but I do have FL Studio, GoXLR and ASIO4ALLv2 drivers. Could one of these also be interfering?

As @Dexcon stated, by the screeching sound description, that 'was' typically an issue caused by the Magix Low Latency 2016 driver in Sound Forge Audio Studio. AFAIK, that driver is not installed with Vegas or SF Pro.
I do not know about FL Studio, GoXLR. I have not read or experienced that issue with ISIO-4-all.
Try the Vegas reset / clear catche procedure

I've done the reset multiple times to no avail.

The fact that the separate Windows Admin account can import mp3s perfectly fine leads me to believe that, despite completely uninstalling & reinstalling the program multiple times, there are some residual files sneaking around each time. Such as, when I reinstall, VEGAS somehow remembers my email & product registration code without me re-entering it.

Are there any other locations to delete VEGAS data aside from Program Files, AppData & the Registry? I have old VEGAS projects on a separate drive from the install one... perhaps that is causing the issue?

appreciate the links but I've already tried these solutions. I'll open up a ticket with support to see what's goin' on with my setup.

@FRW Have you at any time in the past had any pirated versions of Vegas on your pc? These have been known to cause registry problems with legitimate versions subsequently installed.

nope - only legitimate versions. this PC is newly-built with entirely new hardware and a clean install of Windows... maybe VEGAS is somehow taking info from my previous system via the registration code?

that's the only other thing I can think of for the time being.

I recommend using 'Revo Uninstall' (using the advanced scan mode), which can remove left-over registry entries and other pertinent data the default uninstall leaves behind, which can cause issues to reoccur.. Revo Uninstall is highly regarded by many and has pro and freeware versions. The free version is adequate in most cases, unless a forced uninstall is needed.

vkmast wrote on 4/24/2023, 11:17 AM

Revo Uninstall is also recommended by @rraud in the thread linked above.

After you reinstalled, did you need to re-register the MP3 options?

not sure what this means. no additional options pop up when re-installing VEGAS. how would I do this?

just used Revo and nothing changed. made sure to launch the re-install with ctrl&shift, as well. is there any way to force VEGAS to use the "mp3plug2"codec over "mcplug2"?
