MPEG-2 has no audio

erisajd@citlink.net wrote on 3/25/2014, 1:21 PM
I have created several projects using V13. When I render the projects into MPEG-2 files (stored on the computer for eventual incorporation into a DVD with Architect Studio), the MPEG-2 files have no (zerio, zip) audio.

Although I don't want to make a Blu Ray out of these projects, just to test things I generated AVCHD files and they had the audio just fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Probably nothing if it is "for eventual incorporation into a DVD with Architect Studio".
Pls read this thread.

Pls change your username to other than an email address to avoid spam etc.

I know I am dense but if I am doing nothing wrong how is it that I don't have any audio in the mpg files that are rendered by Vegas Studio V13?

I do note that when I am clicking buttons to save the movie (rendered movie) to my hard drive the MPEG-2 option is labeled as "video only" but I really don't think that means "no audio" does it?

And why do I get audio with an AVCHD rendered movie but not an MPEG-2 movie?

I really do need help here.

You can customize (in Advanced Options) your mpeg-2 DVD Architect video stream template to include audio, but in "incorporation to DVD A Studio" it then will be recompressed.
Do read the thread I mentioned, the linked SCS KB article and this other KB article as well.

Because NTSC DVD's don't use MPEG audio. The NTSC DVD spec specifies either AC-3 audio or PCM audio. While some programs will allow you to use MPEG audio and some DVD players will play MPEG audio, it is not part of the NTSC spec and not guaranteed to work. Therefore the Movie Studio MPEG-2 templates that have "DVD Architect" in the name do not include audio because you must render your audio separately using Dolby Digital AC-3 which Movie Studio does for you if you use the Make Movie button.

Also DVD's use a different container called a Video OBject (VOB) file. This contains the video stream in MPEG2 format and the audio stream in AC-3 or PCM format, and combines them into a format the DVD Player can consume. This is why you must render two separate files. (BTW, the PAL DVD spec DOES allow MPEG audio, this is just an NTSC limitation)

If you want MPEG-2 files to play back on your PC, do not use the DVD Architect templates as these are video-only for DVD authoring.

> "I do note that when I am clicking buttons to save the movie (rendered movie) to my hard drive the MPEG-2 option is labeled as "video only" but I really don't think that means "no audio" does it? "

That's correct. You'll find the audio in a file of the same name as the video with the extension .AC3. This probably won't play on your PC. They are meant for DVD and unless you have installed an AC3 decoder, Windows won't know how to play it.

> "And why do I get audio with an AVCHD rendered movie but not an MPEG-2 movie? "

Because AVCHD is program stream that contains both video and audio and is meant to be played back on devices that expect the video and audio to be in the same file. Your problem is not understanding how DVD's are authored from separate streams which requires two files, one for video and another for audio. Feel free to use any of the non-DVD Architect MPEG-2 templates and they will have audio but you will probably have to use the Project | Render As.. menu instead of Make Movie.

Hope that helps. ;-)

MSP 13 (which the OP says he uses) does not have the separate Project | Render As... menu any more. It's all in Make Movie (Advanced options) now.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realize that.
