My Vegas Movie Studio 17 wont start on Win 11.

I-need-help wrote on 10/26/2021, 6:11 PM

Hello.

Whenever I try to open Vegas Movie Studio 17 it stops responding. (windows 11) I can't make a project anything. I just downloaded it, I have already tried re-installing it.

I don't think it's my laptop's specs, I have 16gb ram, iRIS xe graphics and intel core i7 11thgen.

Please if someone had or has a similar issue I need help I have tried everything I could think of. My only other guess would be a problem with windows 11 that I have recently downloaded but I don't know enough about computers to figure it out. I appreciate your time.

Have you recently upgraded from Windows 10 to 11? If so was your VMS17 working okay previously on Windows 10?

I-need-help,

I am running Windows 11 and it starts Vegas Movie Studio Platinum for me. I have version 22000.194 of Windows 11 and the recent patch Microsoft released brought the version up to 22000.282 The version of the OS package is also the 21H2 development chain of Win 11 Pro. This is as specific as I can get if you check your SYSTEM > ABOUT specifications.

The "21H2" branch of software development stems from the Beta version and the "21H1" stems from the Developers version. The Beta version chain is MORE STABLE and the one I went with since stability is key to working with any OS. Technically, this chain is branched off the Beta channel but it is so stable and so reliable that I am quite shocked that Microsoft finally beat their curse of every other OS being stable. Windows 11 is a beast of stability and NOT crashing for any reason. I think I am getting spoiled now and will expect this in the future!

...but I digress...
Once I installed Vegas Movie Studio Platinum version 17.0.0.204, the update from Magix detected the version after activating it and asked if I wanted to download the new version 17 update (496MB download of version 233) which I did... 15 hours later >.<

The stupid pipe to download it from Magix however was chucking away at 64kb pieces so I thought I would get it finished downloading by the time Magix version 25 came out. SERIOUSLY, Magix are you people starving for bandwidth over there in Germany or something? What is this? 1996 all over again? Do I need to install a MODEM??? Increase the download pipe, you dorks! Jeebus!

Both the 204 and the 233 versions of Movie Studio works with Windows 11 just fine. I no longer restart my OS like I used to unless an install of any major core software MUST FORCE ME (via nag boxes) to since restarting an OS is what was wrong with previous versions of older OS's that were not 64-bit congruent. You can actually cheat and just logout of the OS and log back in and prevent a complete restart but if you have a modern SSD or M.2 drive your restart will be in seconds so its not that big a deal anymore...

The days of restarting OS's are coming to a close and good riddance!

Make sure you have at least one of these updates I think.

496MB to fix ONE bug is one heck of a bug fix! Wowzers! 😮

I recently got a new laptop (the one VMS17 isn't working on) but on my old it worked fine... I don't have platinum version of moive stuidio 17. Also when I went to download those bug fixes it said that it was potentially unsafe and could harm my computer... I see no reason that a legit company would require me to download a file like this. honestly if this problem persist I'm just going to switch to another software or buy Movie Studio 18.

Please note that Movie Studio 18 is "another software". From the product pages (click a message there): "MAGIX our parent company, is now offering Movie Studio 18, based on the award winning Movie Edit Pro product line." (And here)

Please note also that updates/patches/new builds are a full installation package (cumulative, i.e. "each subsequent update will include the features of all previous updates") overwriting the previous build.

More than likely your anti-virus at work - not likely a Vegas Movie Studio issue.

I see no reason that a legit company would require me to download a file like this.

For at least the last 10 years, Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio have provided updates via a full .exe version of the program, not via small patches like some software companies. It's just a different approach to updates which other software providers use as well (e.g. iZotope, BorisFX, NewBlueFX, daVinci Resolve, and so on). I'm unclear about why you consider a company that takes this common update approach to be illegitimate.

The now discontinued Vegas Movie Studio (unlikely to be updated) and its replacement Movie Studio 18 have not advised that either support Windows 11, though it would be expected that Movie Studio 18 will do so in the future.

I just want you to know that I am on now Studio version 17 build 223 after this update lasted over 15 HOURS!!! And it starts running on Windows 11 version 22000.282 of the 21H2 build chain. Although right after I updated (and this could be to having other apps running in the background) the first time I tried to start Movie Studio it crashed and now it starts normally. Running a multi-threaded OS like Windows 11 should allow starting apps while other apps are running. After all, it is called "WINDOWS" for a reason and you should have multiple "windows" open with each being in a separate memory space protected from one another. Why it crashed upon initial start is beyond me but it's running fine now and I did NOT restart my OS at all. Another aspect you should not have to do anymore with 64-bit OS's.

It is kind of pointless to actually have technology if you do not use it as it is intended, huh?

Windows Defender, which is built into Windows 10 and 11, is a very very modern Anti-virus software that is quite adept at being able to have running SIMULTANEOUSLY as applications are started and restarted without any interference of their memory space. I could say this would be true (of what you said about stopping AV software)
about AV software about 5 years ago but modern address spacing and protections that Microsoft has created with its two modern OS's (10 and 11) are quite different especially when they themselves created the Defender software to SPECIFICALLY and Implicitly have running in the background to protect the OS from bad software and intrusive code. If Magix can't code in this specific address space it is allowed to make the procedure calls then perhaps they need to get out of the software coding business altogether.

And if you were to stop Windows Defender, which setting would you stop? there is not just ONE toggle and you're done! You need to stop about 37 different functions and processes that allow this modern virus catcher to work its diligent duty. Which of these processes do you intend on disabling first? The folder exclusion? The process algorithms? The dictionary heuristics? Which one?
OR
maybe Magix should learn to code their address space software better so it does not infringe on protected memory allocations like they just got out of developers' school? Hmmm?

There is no just one toggle to Windows Defender and you are off to Softwareville! You do realize these hackers do not give one rats arse about your toggles anyways! You do realize that modern Russian hackers and bots have implicitly started to wage economic warfare at WESTERN countries with specificity!
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/groove-ransomware-calls-on-all-extortion-gangs-to-attack-us-interests/

If there is a choice to disable Defender or to run Magix software (that can't stay in its correct and proper software lane) then MAGIX loses. We can all always go buy other software that does not infringe on address space incorrectly and does not crash due to poor coding. Magix is hardly the only software on the market for video editing. I will use Shotcut if I have to!

This "disable your AV software to make our software work" is so 1988! Get with the times, bro! The logic you are talking about is due to 32-bit OS limitation which modern 64-bit OS's DO NOT HAVE and you can run AV software simultaneously as you install software. That is the point of 64-bit operating systems. They were redesigned to have more protections and more exclusion of procedure call interference from badly coded software.

Windows 11 has been running for me since October 5th and I have not had even ONE crash of the operating system not even a portion of it. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY astonishing to me how stable Windows 11 OS is! Only badly coded apps crash if they are poorly implemented to exploit the protected architecture of 32-bit apps acting like they are 64-bit apps by hybrid coding. And yes there is backward compatibility to address the apps by giving them a protected structure to operate if they are not fully 64-bit too!

Windows 11 is truly amazing! Get it and use it is free right now!

Both Platinum and non-platinum flavors are offered on that page link. The update is basically the entire software package and not just an update. Instead of offering an update (like they SHOULD have done!) they just recompiled the entire program all over again and force you to download the whole thing. Its a complete mess for such a small fix it seems. Unless, it also updates other things they are not willing to disclose in that text disclaimer.

a.) When you recompile the entire code for the software it will be the same same and/or larger than the original install size.
b.) If it is a TRUE update then the file size will be always much smaller in direct proportion the fix provided (to the original size).

They did the former not the latter. Meh, go figure...

I am also having problems with VMS 17 Platinum. Apart from one or two minor issues it was running ok on my PC using Widows 10.
Foolishly I was tempted to update to Windows 11 and Movie Studio immediately began having problems.
I reverted back to Windows 10 but Movie Studio still doesn't run as it should. I constantly get "Movie Studio Not Responding" error messages.
Whenever I start my PC since reverting to Windows 10 I get an error message saying a certain file is missing or unreadable. Apart from Movie Studio I haven't found any other issues with my PC.

Having spent days on this I have totally given up trying to solve the issue.
I shall uninstall Magix products and never use them again.
