Please Help! Frustrated with Vegas Pro 16 Import Media File

manny-g wrote on 7/10/2023, 1:55 PM

I'm running a fresh install of Vegas Pro 16 and when I go to Import a File to edit in my timeline it's not reading the audio type accurately. Reading a 5.1 Surround Sound Mpeg 2 file as a Stereo sound? I'm specifically trying to work with Surround Sound files and I can't figure this out! What's even more confusing is that it works perfectly fine on my other computer running Windows 7 SP1 on both PC's. Every 5.1 surround sound clip reads as a stereo file and I've tried just about everything....Ugh! I'm actually a computer Technician and have been working with Sony Vegas Pro Software for over 17 years now. Your responses will be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Please post the Mediainfo report for your MPEG-2 source file.

Mediainfo can be installed from here:

Vegas Pro has all the essential drivers and intricate details embedded right into the software of each version and I have never seen anything like this. There has never been a 3rd party software of any type that I know of that can cause an issue that only affects the audio reading of a particular file. With that being said this isn't an issue with the Movie file itself but a software issue within Vegas Pro. Yet this is a solid identical Sony Vegas program running on just two separate computers both with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. Hardware shouldn't have anything to do with this issue without an error box popping up with details regarding this. Completely bizarre with absolutely no explanation. I've been in this field of electronics for 30 years and have never seen anything like this...

I'll just give you the answer and let you figure out why.

Rewrap to .ts with VideoReDo or FFMPEG or .mts with Shutter Encoder.

john_dennis Good to meet you buddy how's life treating you? Thanks for taking the time in looking into my dilemma with this software program. Now am I trying to figure out why you are giving me the answer? Or am I trying to figure out if your solution works or not? I'm not familiar with (Shutter Encoder) and not sure why I would need it. I'd appreciate it if you could elaborate more on the specifics for this solution with a little more detailed specifications as to what I need to do and why. Thanks

NEVER INSTALL A CODEC PACK! Just install the one specific codec you need!

Sony's last version was version 13 - about 10 years ago Magix purchased it...

@manny-g Because installing a codec pack is never the solution. Codec packs can hurt far more than they help. That's why I shouted it. You should never install a codec pack! If you need a new codec, install only the ONE codec you need installed - then it won't potentially mess up/overwrite the good codecs provided with VEGAS. Yes, it might have solved this specific problem but it could also cause far more problems than it solved. If the issue was a codec, it is much better to install the one codec needed.

Codec packs are harder to get rid of than a bedbug infestation. That should be reason enough not to install them.
