Rendering Intermediary Files/Preprocessing - Best Practices

Not sure if "intermediary" files is the right word - but I'm working on a video and one of the sources is dark and has a lot of noise. To reduce the amount of processing, I was considering trying to improve those source files separately from my video composition - using Neat for noise removal, improving brightness and contrast, sharpness etc. Is this a good practice, or by re-rendering am I only going to degrade quality further? Assuming if I do this I should try to use a very high quality format (maybe ProRes - although I'm not sure how well Vegas works with ProRes files in the editing stage as in previous issues I've had, community members have recommended converting MOV to MP4).

Any other tips, or best practices to help clean up my video are greatly appreciated. The source video had VFR but I converted to CFR using FFMPEG scripts - here is the result:

How to you use "legacy decoding"? For my project, prores worked great but may have been overkill in bit depth given my source, so I did buy MagicYUV (need to purchase for the Vegas plugins) and it seems to be working well for my intermediate files - although they don't render much faster than the prores. Using Voukoder for my final output (final destination is just YouTube/Social).

Just go to preferences/ file io and select "enable legacy decoding" for HEVC.

I tried the free install, no option during install to choose vegas and after install, no render option.. Then noticed this, and after testing the trials for each, it did install for vegas. Purchased standard since I'm only using 8bit

Thanks everyone for the help on this thread - we released the final project on Friday... I didn't quite get the drum video as good as I'd like because of the way I shot it in the low light (will adjust iso next time), and the bassist only gave me 720 to work with, but overall happy with how it came out..

By the way... is there a thread or category where people share their work? Would love to see what others are working on to get ideas :) -
