Vegas 365 licensing sucks!

David-Williamson wrote on 10/16/2019, 11:47 AM

Does anyone else find the Vegas 365 licensing restrictive? I work on several machines regularly depending on my schedule and here I am. Adobe's CC makes it easy to switch machines (activate/deactivate) so I can work where I need to. Magix's scheme is far worse; I can only deactivate a device once a month?! If they're trying to cater to professionals, they're failing. We need more flexibility than this, especially since for those that have bought into the whole subscription thing. Let me work when and where I need to!!

Thoughts? Am I just being a whiner about this?

@David-Williamson I do not have Vegas 365, but I asked about this recently and got the following answer from MAGIX Pro Support: "Vegas Pro 365 can be deactivated in the same ways that the standard license can, either from your account or from in the software itself."

And this is an earlier answer from MAGIX Sales Dept.: "It is possible to log in and manage your currently activated machines via the MAGIX account. You have the option here to deactivate a machine, should you wish to install and activate on a new computer. This is possible once per month.
An other option is to deactive the devices directly through the program after a new installation and that is unlimited possible.
"

So if I understand you correctly, I can manually deactivate the software on the machine itself and that is unlimited? If that is true, then at least I can do that as needed instead of the "once per month" thing, which is highly inconvenient.

Our understanding is that "From the VEGAS Pro Help menu choose Deactivate the Software on this PC. This option can be used as often as you wish. An internet connection is required."

You could try and confirm that with Online Live Chat which is on right now. See https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/support/

This is simply not consistent with the way Vegas has been available on two machines, always, in the past, and one should be able to work on two machines, as projects are not available to work on while one is rendering and some other tasks. I find this an egregious policy, especially as a long time customer.

I see no "live chat" at that link...I looked through various pages, can't find it

@David-Williamson see here 2nd paragraph and under "Sales Info" here. You seem to have missed it for today. Sorry about that, it was on when I posted.

Btw, this is from Support form suggested answers:

Since the beginning Vegas was allowed to be installed on 2 devices, logically: 1 Desktop and 1 laptop.
It's a shame.

@Sirio @zdogg

I recall reading about this only affecting Vegas 365, which is a subscription, not the regular purchased (licensed) programs. The regular programs can be activated on 2 devices at a time.

Vegas Pro 18 Edit, Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum, Magix Video Pro X16, Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2024, Xara Designer Pro X19, Samplitude Pro X8 Suite, Music Maker 2025 Premium, SF Audio Cleaning Lab 4, Sound Forge Pro 16 and more.

@john-brown yes, for the perpetual versions see the FAQ section 9. Note the two options to deactivate. ("As for the Steam editions of our software, since they don't activate through our system but through Steam we would suggest asking Steam support.")

"The software VEGAS 365 can be installed only on one computer" and "can be deactivated in the same ways that the standard license can, either from your account or from in the software itself." (Quotes from the MAGIX Sales Dept. replies to my enquiries June/July 2019)

@vkmast

The note about VEGAS 365 being installed on only one computer was what I remembered and was looking for. Have you seen this anywhere in the marketing information (Magix.com site) prior to subscribing?

I think that this should now be clear:

  • Perpetual versions can be activated on 2 computers simultaneously. For more, deactivate one and activate another.
  • VEGAS 365 can be activated on 1 computer at a time. For a different computer, deactivate the existing one and activate the other.

Vegas Pro 18 Edit, Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum, Magix Video Pro X16, Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2024, Xara Designer Pro X19, Samplitude Pro X8 Suite, Music Maker 2025 Premium, SF Audio Cleaning Lab 4, Sound Forge Pro 16 and more.

@john-brown I don't recall seeing that info on vegascreativesoftware.com. In addition to your summary, I'd again urge the users to note the difference between the deactivating options as to how often you can use them.

Sorry, it happen a mistake. My second Vegas Pro was installed on a win7, then I upgraded my OS to Win10 and Magix consider this as another computer, then I deactivate the win7 and re-activate it on the same PC with win10 and now it works.

seeking clarification.... I thought you were allowed to have Vegas Pro (not 365) on your laptop and desktop at the same time without activating/ deactivating each time you go from one device to the other.. Can someone please confirm this is still the case?

vkmast wrote on 1/28/2020, 3:15 PM

As in the linked FAQ, "You can use VEGAS Pro (14.0 and later) simultaneously on 2 devices." Also mentioned by @john-brown "Perpetual versions can be activated on 2 computers simultaneously."

Ok, thanks vkmast :)

Which is the "Perpetual Version"? I am not familiar with that terminology for software.

"It doesn't require a [monthly] subscription, meaning that once you go through the one-time purchase, you own the copy forever."

See use of the term e.g. here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro-365/ FAQ and here.
