001 LINEAR Easing

The following four images are hopefully self-explanatory. But in case they're not... image one has no smoothing applied. Image two has smoothing set to 100% on the first key. Image three has smoothing applied on the first and last key at 100% and image four just has smoothing applied to the last key at 100%.

The following sets of four observe this pattern.

This is the same as 'Smooth'

So far, I've looked at what Vegas currently offers.

Now I'm playing with the idea of using maths to expand the quintet...

With an Exponent of 1

With an Exponent of 2

With an Exponent of 5

The basic formula (if you're interested in building your own spreadsheet) is x = y^n

I'm just exploring at the moment, but in general I think wherever there are keys there should be a consistent approach to tweening / easing. The gold standard, of course, would be bézier curve handles on all timelines and separation of different elements. This however would require a major overhaul of the GUI and perhaps therein lies the rub - how to keep long-time users happy with the familiar feel of VEGAS and cater for those pushing for change in this area.

@Selina - Don't group me in amongst any Luddites, individuals not embracing change, using VegasPro. But you've made your position clear. I see that the "rub" is the revenue available to Team-Vegas to employ staff to do it.

Selina wrote on 4/4/2022, 1:49 AM

I've added a 'smoothing' factor I call SHIFT which can be both positive or negative and makes the curves much more interesting ...

..and an example of a negative value:

Now I'll have to think about a way to easily implement these to the timeline. Scripting seems to be the way to go as accessing VEGAS' clipboard rules out a simple copy and paste route.

I can see, now that I've treated myself to Vegasaur - thanks to @3POINT for the suggestion - what they've done is to use the cursor position between two existing keys or selected events to ascertain the starting and ending points along the timeline in order to calculate the number of keys required and their relative values.

What I'm also thinking is that if each frame is keyed then it's perfectly possible to have individual tweenings / easings for separate elements:

For example, a "slow" movement in the X direction coupled with a "linear" spin in the Z and a "fast" offset of the pivot point. The possibilities are tantalising !!!

A quick demo ... in the first video only LINEAR easing is used:

I've changed the formulae to allow Negative Shift (or smoothing as VEGAS has it)...

Now that I'm happy with how this works, I can think about the next step:

  • Perhaps adding a Random Tween (noise) and an Oscillating (sine, triangle, saw, pulse) one... I won't be looking at R Penner's Easings - Vegasaur offers these.

@Selina Have you tried also the easing possibilities of Vegas ProType Titler? They're a little hidden, but when found, they're endless. Unfortunately ProType Titler is a deprecated feature, but its easing possibilities would be a good example for implementing to pan/crop etc.
