VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Update 3 (Builds 176 & 221) - General Discussion

VEGASDerek wrote on 5/17/2021, 8:41 AM

Dear Community,

We have just released the third update for VEGAS Movie Studio 17 (build 176)  and VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum (build 221). Please give us your feedback in this thread.

If you already have an earlier build of VEGAS Movie Studio 17 or VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum,  there is no need to uninstall it. These builds will overwrite your installation and retain your settings. Keep in mind that your computer will need to be online for activation after the update.

For more information, please refer to our official announcement with patch notes.

I hope you have a great rest of your week.

Sincerely,

Derek

Two problems with this: 1) the prompted update process didn't work (after two downloads, with error message saying it couldn't install as program was running (it wasn't), I simply downloaded and then installed); 2) it will no longer build proxies of my footage (25fps 8bit 4k mov files from Lumix G9, which incidentally still work fine in Movie Studio 16 to which I have had to revert) saying format not recognized. Not too pleased at all: currently MS V17 is unusable.

Would this work with MS 16 Platinum by any chance or is it strictly for 17?

This patch is only for VMS 17/VMSP 17. See this comment on how to contact tech support to confirm.

@VEGASDerek
I also experienced the exact same problem when I tried to update. I thought it may have just been a glitch on my computer, but apparently it is not.

Being a nerd, I opened the AppData folder where the update is temporarily downloaded into, and copied it out of there before the program removed the install file. I then installed it manually.

Had a problem with updating movie studio 17. I found that when the window "saying update can not run while movie studio is still running" when it is not running. Move my mouse to the toolbar find the little icon that indicates installer is running, right click select to run the installer from there. Worked for me.

I posted something about this under "support", please look for my post. The bottom line is that the download took SIX HOURS !!! When it was finally complete, I had to close program and when I reopened it to select download now, it started the download update all over again. I could not find the download that I had already done anywhere in my system so I am waiting another 6 hours. Surely these must be some sort of Zip file that you can build that would be quicker. The file is 496MB. It is taking me longer to do this upgrade than it did to install the program from scratch when I bought it. BTW, this is for Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum on a Windows 10 operating system. The title of my post in Support is Download Issues

😡

My download started very slow then after an hour it suddenly sped up. Presumably internet blockage somewhere around the globe.

Similar problems here for Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum - I followed prompt to download and update...Download finished quickly but update was simply wishful thinking. Any ideas..thanks.

Could not contact support and therefore no tickets raised....my initial comments were raised on the Magix forum which apparently is not valid.

Thanks

@emanuel-schembri Auto update sometimes for some does not work properly.

  1. Download the file from the appropriate link at the end of this post https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-17-update-3-builds-176-221--129201/
  2. With VMS shut down run the file to install.

I was unable to create proxy files for my videos after this update. I used Windows system restore to go back to the previous build and everything is fine now , well ''fine'' by Movie Studio 17 standards. I still get unexpected program freezes which ruins my projects. Possibly I'm overloading my processor but I rather think it's down to faults in Movie Studio 17. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to friends.

Thanks Eric. Just what I did & was successful!

Just one further point....true, downloads are not always successful..lately I experienced this with a new update. Checking that a download has installed well can make the difference between enjoying & hating a product.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/18/2021, 7:34 AM

What seems to happen is that after the download VMS shuts down ready to install the new build. But sometimes it doesn't completely shut down so the installation cannot proceed. The download then gets deleted!

I have this very same issue. Tried also to download the patch/update from the link provided and the page just doesn't work.

vkmast wrote on 5/18/2021, 11:40 AM

@Douglas-McLaurin did you try to download from the "Direct Download Link" mentioned in @EricLNZ's comment above? Working here OK, but sometimes Chrome does not download without a workaround, so try another browser if that's the case. Or try to use other options.

Douglas-McLaurin wrote on 5/18/2021, 1:22 PM

Yes I have. Since yesterday...and I get the same result: once I get to the "redirect" page to start the download I will get this page

Can't get it to work. Not from the program's self-updater nor from the download page. I'm stuck.

Would not update after numerous attempts then I actually had unistall and reinstall four times and now its running very slow and I am furious with this last update.

David-Hancock wrote on 5/18/2021, 10:44 PM

I just installed 221 and over-wrote 204 (oops, big mistake.) I cannot get mov files to load. These files were working a-okay earlier tonight in 204. The issue seems to be with the proxy creation. 221 churns and churns and churns and then gives me an error message about incompatible files. If I disable UHD proxies, the video will play for a minute then freeze and the preview screen turns black.

I have already gone into deprecated features and enabled Quicktime, yes.

Also of note, when I drop a file into the timeline the green bar starts at (1 of 2) and then when I receive the error message it advances to (1 of 3), (1 of 4), etc. Currently, it's on 1 of 8, which is a pretty high number given that I have one file in the timeline.

Here is the error messages' exact wording:

"An error occurred while creating a proxy file for a stream. The file is an unsupported format." This happens every time the green bar hits 100% and then the program fails to save a proxy file.

Has anyone identified a fix for this glitch?

Edit: I reset the program and that appears to have worked (admittedly tonight's video is only about 2 minutes 30 seconds long.) To reset the program's cache, on your desktop shortcut hold CTRL+SHIFT and then double-click the desktop shortcut. Don't release CTRL+SHIFT until a message asking to erase the cache appears. You can safely erase the cache without damaging your projects or files. All the cache does is track your settings. You may need to re-do some settings (I did, but only about 30 seconds' worth.) Currently, the video is rendering and the preview worked just fine with no errors after doing that.

vkmast wrote on 5/19/2021, 2:34 AM

Please note that there is a FAQ on resetting.

Build 221 is trash. It was running just final until the update. It lags, it crashes, and takes forever to load and I need to get the problem fixed or else I will be switching from Magix. Can anyone give me some answers on how to fix this crap?!?!?

Same issues - tried adding media to a new project and has crashed 4 times. Using same gear as every other video.

Please tag the person you would like to respond. In this case @VEGASDerek may not even notice your ultimatum.

@VegasDerek You have 48 hours to fix this s*** or I want a full refund for Movie Studio Platinum 17 and my company is an affiliated partner with Magix and we will sever all ties.

For me, Build 221 still freezes when I attempt to edit a credit roll, even though that is one of the things the release notes says it is supposed to fix. Anyone else seeing this problem?
