Vegas Pro Workflow Bugs as found in 19 and now Version 20

I'm going to post this here. Vegas 19 Build 643 has some stability issues with HVEC / h.265 files. Reverting to previous release / build 636 resolves my HVEC issues. At least two other people I've found on the forum had the same issue. I believe the software team / developers maybe looking at this thread. I've certainly passed it on.

Issues resolved - bug in latest Radeon Driver (probably not vegas) causes issues compositing in Vegas. Must use Radeon Driver 22.5.1

Legacy HVAC support does not function, causes some machines to crash. You have to disable it under Preferences -> File I/O

I notice Vegas 20 is MUCH faster, but a bit apprehensive as I really want to see some of these workflow concerns taken care of. Anybody else here trying Vegas 20? I installed the trail but don't see many of the items in our list implemented (if any)?

I think it's still early and 20 is very much a continuation of 19. Perhaps check back after the first update or two come out.

Default folder for Mic Arming: I'd like if Magix would populate the open file dialog with the project folder instead of the AppData folder. Then I could check the don't open this dialog box. What would be even better is if an audio assets folder could be defined in the project as I use a structure to organize my project assets w/in the project folder itself. For now it appears as they are simply using a default folder form the open file dialog class in their code, and I don't think anybody would ever use the folder as is now. They should really define that variable in the class as something useful / use the root folder of the project.

Master Audio Selector doesn't always switch: I've never quite been able to figure this out. The master audio level bar has a selector on it to select the output device for monitoring audio. My system has three sound outputs, the HDMI / monitor, Motherboards integrated audio, and a USB monitoring / headset I use. Sometimes I can switch audio outputs with the selector, sometimes I cannot. I cannot quite figure out why the functionality is not consistent.

Timmer panel will not save / remember default button layout: I set the default buttons only for the environment / software to forget them next time I load it. This is a big annoyance of mine, I'm constantly having to reconfigure the work environment every time I load the software. Maybe an issue with my operating system? I'm reluctant to think the issue is on my side as I've had multiple systems all behave the same way. I cannot figure out why the software wouldn't remember your layouts though. It just makes no sense to me.

Trimmer Add to Timeline at cursor button, doesn't respect auto ripple edit: when using trimmer I cannot add to timeline as it won't ripple edit. It blows out any clips already on the timeline.

Audio device conflicts: Vegas 20 Build 326 doesn't seem to gracefully manage audio conflicts. I have one output selected in Master Audio Bus but this doesn't match up with preferences->Audio Device. When conflicts arise, I have to enter preferences and or the Windows task bar / speaker icon output control. Thankfully Vegas 20 remains stable. Older versions would hard crash windows if there was a conflict with my Rhode Al-1 USB microphone amplifier and headphone jack.

Trimmer Pane: Make play button and pause button same button. First click plays clip, second clip pauses clip. Just like on YouTube and other players.

Track Motion Region doesn't always draw: when adding track motion efx to clip, sometimes the region box doesn't draw on the target clip. If I fiddle with the efx in the efx chain, and or slip the clip it sometimes draws.

@weinerschizel please update your topic title to include v.20 or start a new thread for your findings in v.20.

Download Manager: option to keep install files. It's a pain in the butt to find the install files when you need to reinstall Vegas or rebuild your system. The Magix download server is also very slow. Like a little faster than 1mbps which is very slow by today's standards. It'd be much better if Magix provided install files for the software.

Panosonic Lumix Clips Trimming w/ Vegas 20 Build 326

Can drag clips onto timeline. However preview goes blank once clip is trimmed. Issue goes away when using AVC legacy decoding.

I've been editing with Panasonic clips (MOV, AVC, MP4, 1080P, UHD4K, 10bit, 422, etc.) forever and never had the "blank" issue. I used the RX480 8GB up to the middle of last year.

Looking at your video, why is the resolution that high if you are editing 1080? What drivers are you using? What FX are you using? What happens if you turn them off?

One of the photographers forgot to set his resolution to 4k. All the other cameras are running 4k.

Crashes while saving I've deliberately started working more slowly in Vegas. I noticed if I don't wait several seconds after saving (a habit as software crashes frequently on me) that the software will lock up. On a second note, the software is more stable if slow down my clicks and input in the GUI. Back to main point, it most definitely, crashes if it's saving and you proceed to play back the timeline. The software should present an hour glass while it saves and pause or queue user input until the save operation is complete.

Can't say I've seen that crash. I just tried the "recipe". I did a Ctrl S and pressed the spacebar to play the timeline. No crash.

It seems to be around the same time as I save. It's something I'm doing in rapid succession. I cannot quite put my finger on it. I save and then it seems to crash. But now that you mention it, I cannot get it to do it again. It's crashing less now that I'm forcing myself to work slower... but it still crashes and I cannot quite catch what is going on when it crashes.

I'm a "touch typist" going back to the 60's. I'm pretty quick and don't look at the keyboard while typing. I did a Ctrl s to save and then hit the spacebar to play the timeline. No crash and the timeline playback continued along without a problem.

It just crashed now during a cut and paste of a timeline clip. I don't think that's what provoked the crash though. Dang, I wish I could figure out what events are causing this to crash. I only seem to notice if I work slower, it crashes less. It doesn't seem to be the save operation though as I'd previously thought.

Reyfox wrote on 3/9/2023, 5:24 PM

I have no solution for you. I sometimes work fairly quickly and use keyboard shortcuts whenever possible. After doing anything major in editing, I personally do an incremental save myself. When I take a break, so does the software and computer. Everything is shut down while I have a cup of tea and thing about the next group of edits.

This has worked well for me on my computer.

@Reyfox good point. I could try turning off the software from time to time. I tend to binge edit for hours then revisit the next day.

It just crashed. The preview pane where it says "Frames" continues to try and render a frame but only the dots after the frame number cycle. The software stopped responding.

I'm going to get to the bottom of this yet! 💪

UPDATE: The software will respond in this mode UNTIL I try to playback the timeline. After that it locks up. I think this is my symptom. Typically it will crash, then before I can think about what I did before it locked up, I go to playback the timeline and the entire GUI crashes, instead of just the "video preview" pane.

I "binge" edit also. It's just I need a break for myself to stretch. I have yet to experience your symptoms and crashes.

I hope you find a solution soon!

weinerschizel wrote on 3/10/2023, 10:21 AM

I've had two complete editing machine builds now. Experienced same troubles on both machines. I'm on a fresh install on this build and still same trouble. Seems I check the forum while I'm waiting for software to recover haha

You may have told me, what is your build? CPU, GPU, Memory, OS?

I've asked Magix what they test on, but they've never answered that question for me.

Reyfox wrote on 3/10/2023, 12:14 PM

My build is in my signature. Before the RX 6700XT, I was using the RX480 with nary an issue. I just installed on a NVME a fresh install of Win11, migrating over my "stuff" from my Win10 SSD. There was no difference in Win10 or Win11 with me using Vegas. I like using NBFX TP7, BorisFX Continuum 2023, and Ignite Pro and no problems.

weinerschizel wrote on 3/10/2023, 11:23 PM

Weird. Your system seems similar to what I've run other than I have an older I7 architecture. I previously had the RX480 and had similar issues.
