Where is the role of RAM in VEGAS Pro?

iEmby wrote on 8/11/2019, 5:13 AM

i have

Intel i5-7th Gen Desktop

8 GB RAM

4 GB Graphic card (Radeon RX 560)

Working on VEGAS PRO 15

right now i didn't face any problem in any thing.

Just want to know if i increase my RAM from 8GB to 16 GB... what will be effective in my V15 ????

Well according to the specifications of Vegas Pro on their website 16gb is the recommended.

RAM: 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB recommended; 32 GB recommended for 4K)

And as a addendum to that, find a fast ram like 3000mhz & up, find a dual channel kit (8gbx2) would be nice to be sure they have the same specs. I think Vegas will love that.

ram17 wrote on 8/11/2019, 7:10 AM

I stand to be corrected, I didn't read it carefully it's V15, thought it is V16, though plenty of fast ram would still be nice for pc performance beyond the recommended & the minimum specs.

If you have the budget, go for 3000mhz & sell your 2400mhz ram, if you don't have yet, buy a single stick for now & buy that same specs later on. And just a reminder that it would be a waste of money if you pair a 3200/3000 mhz to a lower mhz ram cause it'll automatically run at the lowest frequency of the other stick.

"For optimal performance, we recommend the following minimum system requirements" .

It is recommended in 4K editing (32gb) even though Vegas Pro doesn't occupy all your ram but that is the optimal tech specs requirement.

You can set it for your dynamic ram preview, but I don't know other settings than that to certainly use your ram at max. But I think it is better be abundant than to have a shortage.

I am looking at upgrading my memory as I also have 8GB and since I put in a new video card, Vegas seems to be lagging. My memory is specified as DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

My Motherboard spec says:

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
* Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs.
* Refer to www.asus.com or user manual for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists).
* Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default.

So what would be the best memory to get for my board? It sounds like my current memory is outdated based on this discussion.

You can check it yourself by loading a heavy project and do want you normally do with opened taskmanager and you can see how it goes.
My use of my 16 GB DDR4 never goes beyond the 50%.

Spend less than $100 and buy something like this:

I have 64GB of 3000mhz DDR4, it never is fully utilized by Vegas. The only time I've ever used even a nice chunk of it is when doing massive dynamic RAM previews, and those are hit or miss on if they'll render at all, or if they'll play back smoothly once they do (for some reason, some effects do not render into dynamic RAM preview, such as the new slomo effect).

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I have the suspicion VP doesn't really use more than 50% of whatever unless there's a leak; unless this is a windows thing?

my current Win10/64 system (latest drivers, water cooled) :

Intel Coffee Lake i5 Hexacore (unlocked, but not overclocked) 4.0 GHz on Z370 chipset board,

32GB (4x8GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR4-2133) XMP-3000 RAM,

Intel 600series 512GB M.2 SSD system drive running Win10/64 home automatic driver updates,

Crucial BX500 1TB EDIT 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD

2x 4TB 7200RPM NAS HGST data drive,

Intel HD630 iGPU - currently disabled in Bios,

nVidia GTX1060 6GB, always on latest [creator] drivers. nVidia HW acceleration enabled.

main screen 4K/50p 1ms scaled @175%, second screen 1920x1080/50p 1ms.

I haven't done a lot of video work, so I'm unsure how much RAM is involved with editing video. Typically, where the amount of RAM is important is when you get into more multi-track audio mixing and processing while using audio FX plugins. Throw a few good quality Reverbs on an Audio track in Vegas and start watching your RAM usage go up. Audio seems to not get very much attention on this forum, so probably not a big deal for most here and is the reason it gets unnoticed. I wouldn't run anything less than 16GB of RAM, my system which is a laptop is currently maxed out at 32GB.

I agree with both of these statements. VSTs will access memory apart from what the program itself utilizes.

this goes to my main "complaint" about VP, it is now about a twenty year old program, maybe older, and the coding was for machines with less, but very expensive at the time, RAM, so RAM has never been something that this program seems to demand and/or fully maximize if one has, as do I, a boatload of RAM, in my case 64Gigs..

Sixteen would probably be fine, and don't think speed is as important as size. Your machine is not going to go that fast no matter what RAM you throw in there. But, as one mentioned, if you are doing audio with VSTs, yes, Ram is going to be a factor.
