A simple Border Around a Cropped Video???

Allan-Finney6747 wrote on 12/4/2019, 7:57 AM

Hi - I'm using VEgas Pro 15 and I've read the forums and moved the "border" fx in front of the "crop" fx and in front of the Pan/Crop tool and I've read the forums and looked and looked for an answer. So if anyone has any idea on how to quickly add a simple border around a cropped video without adding stacked track fx's etc. etc. shadow this or that - just like any consumer grade video editing program - I would certainly appreciate the answer. Adding a simple border around a cropped video shouldn't be this difficult or time consuming. Seriously???

Adding the Border effect in front of the Pan/Crop effect works on Version 12. Can you show a screenshot of it not working in Version 15?

Adding the Border effect in front of the Pan/Crop effect works on Version 16 also

Right - well I can't get the border plugin to work on a cropped video. I'm trying for a simple border (all four sides) around a cropped video. I've tried the techniques recommended in various forums, tutorials etc. Somebody even suggested I disable my GPU so I did that and it still didn't work. So I'm still left with the attached results. hope you can make out the settings!!

photo - Border before Crop - shows the "border" plugin ahead of the pan/crop adjustments which I've adjusted to give me a vertical image (blue background to show the difference)

Photo - Border with crop plugin - shows the border plugin before the "crop" plugin which I've adjusted to give me a 1/2 frame view of the video (blue background)

Photo - pan/crop settings - shows the pan/crop settings with the border plugin activated

photo - pan crop with border - shows the pand crop settings with the crop plugin activated

Oops, I missed your comment about cropping. I believe this is a bug that has been around a long time and complained about a few times. I don't know any easy fix.

Not clear to me what you want to achieve.
What do you want for the end result of your project.
1. A cropped photo as total?
2. A cropped photo as part of the total screen ?
3. What screensize/projectsettings do you want/use?

End result is a cropped video with a border around all four sides. Pretty simple really. I'm not sure how the project settings fit into it as it should work in all project sizes and settings but this particular video (see photos above) was from a 1920 x 1080 video. I mean most consumer grade software has a function to put a border around a cropped video. I can't believe that Vegas "pro" requires all the rigamarole to accomplish this one small effect that is used a lot in documentaries, explainers, technical, tutorials, lecture videos etc. etc. etc.

That 's the most simple of all possibilities: drag your wanted Border FX to the preview screen

I must admit that such a simple task is a pita with Vegas. The only way I know to achieve a border around a cropped video, is using track motion as follows:

(and Track Motion)

john_dennis wrote on 12/4/2019, 2:17 PM

As much as I've come to appreciate the Crop fX, it's not an absolute necessity. Combinations of Pan/Crop and Track Motion can produce a broad array of visuals.

I agree with the OP. It should work correctly and you shouldn't have to use mulitude effx to get a simple border around a cropped image.

Allan-Finney6747 wrote on 12/4/2019, 4:38 PM

Thanks Dot - just based on the "workarounds" here - and thanks to everyone that waded in - I'm going to write this off as a bad mark against an otherwise excellent program. BUT - in all my searching I actually found something called the "Cookie Cutter" tool that gets close to the target - although it's a bit of a blunt instrument and lacks any fine control mechanisms. Is there a place to make a suggestion for the software development team? Surely to god they must know about this???

EricLNZ wrote on 12/4/2019, 5:09 PM

I've come across this problem in VMS which might be identical as reading through this thread there appears to be an important distinction overlooked.

The OP is referring to the "Video FX Crop" as distinct from the "Event Pan/Crop" tool. My VMS experience is that I can get the border where I want it with the Event Pan/Crop tool by playing with the FX order but I cannot achieve this with the Crop Video FX. No amount of playing with the FX order gets it to behave. There appears to be a bug with the Crop Video FX.

Allan-Finney6747 wrote on 12/4/2019, 5:31 PM

THanks ERic - Actuallly I've been trying everything - the Border FX, the pan/crop tool, the Crop fx, the PIP and even the Cookie Cutter tool which I think I'm going to be making use of. I know you can use track motion to put a border around a video clip but seriously I can also take a solid color and draw a line between the clips if I have to but really?? All of these are what I call really bad software design myself. But, as in everything else, it's always something.

@Allan-Finney6747 @Former user

"It should work correctly and you shouldn't have to use mulitude effx to get a simple border around a cropped image."

I think both of you are missing an important subtlety. Vegas Pro 15-416 is completely capable of producing the results that you're after with the amount of effort that you desire. It apparently does not do that with every user installation and hardware configuration. You should change your focus from program changes to inspection of why the results are sub-optimal on your particular installation and hardware configuration.

Provide details using this FAQ.

In spite of all my previous (overly-complex) examples, my current system can get it done with little drama with Vegas 15-416 and Vegas 17-353 putting the Border fX after Pan/Crop. That was not the case with 13-453 and 14-270.

Vegas 13-453

Vegas 14-270

Vegas 15-416

Vegas 17-353

How the sausage is made in Vegas Pro 15-416...

My configuration is in my signature.

Allan-Finney6747 wrote on 12/4/2019, 5:45 PM

Well John - I am gobsmacked. You certainly put a four-sided border around a cropped video. I'm using VP 15 build 416 as well but for whatever reason I don't get the same results as you do. I've seen tips to not use my GPU but that hasn't helped. So while I thank you so much for showing me that this is indeed possible, I'm still at a loss as to how to do it on my system. I'll fill out the program details as per your link!

Former user wrote on 12/4/2019, 8:32 PM

John, you have shown that it depends on the Version, not configuration since it does not work on some versions on your computer. This makes it a bug.

But you are right. If I turn hardware acc off, it acts completely different. It works correctly with hardware off.

EricLNZ wrote on 12/4/2019, 9:02 PM

@john_dennis Your successful attempts appear to be all done using Event Pan/Crop. What results do you obtain if instead you crop using the Crop Video FX where available?

I haven't gotten a round tuit.
