I don't know about Dot Net 1.0 but you can enable back as far as 2.0 in Windows 10.

I'll try that free trial of Vegas Pro 20, thanks for that idea.

If there are plugins in 5 that you don't have in 20 you might need to use your old computer to strip them off before bringing the projects in. Otherwise it should work.

Just thinking, if a Sony Vegas 5.0 project is open in a newer version of VEGAS, you might not be able to open the Sony Vegas 5.0 projects in Sony Vegas 5.0 again because, I assume, the newer version will convert the project file to the newer version of the software (VEGAS). So, if you want to be able to open the Sony Vegas 5.0 project in Sony Vegas 5.0 you may want to back up the Sony Vegas 5.0 projects, then open them in a newer version of VEGAS.

Good point- do copy all projects and append VP 20 to the file name so you can still open the originals in SV 5 if needed.

Vegas gives you a warning when saving an older project with a newer version of Vegas, at that point you can decide to save the project with a new name or append a version identification to the file name.

Hello. I transferred my (very old) copy of Sony Vegas 5.0 to my new computer but can't get it to work. I get these error messages: "This application software requires Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1" and "The code execution cannot proceed because vegas50k.dll was not found." When I try to download those files I can't find anything

Did you just "copy" the files? Or did you actually install Vegas 5?

Leading on from @jetdv 's comment, if you have indeed 'installed' Vegas Pro 5, have you installed it on the C drive rather than another drive? In a recent post, a person was having problems with installing Vegas Pro 3 on a new computer but was installing it on the D drive and also experiencing a problem with a (different) .dll file not working/found.

@jetdv that's a good question. But I THINK I installed it. And if I did it correctly, it was installed on the C drive. That's where all the program files are. Thanks for being patient with me! I'm not as tech savvy as the crew here.

If you installed Vegas 5 from the original optical installation disc, try installing from a downloaded installer. If you have a valid VP-5 SCS registration, you can download it from the 'Magix Service Center> My Products'. All the customer info and legacy products were ported over to Magix in the acquisition.
You can also download Vegas 5.0d (from the SCS archives)

Wow, Vegas 5 is from 2004. Nearly 19 years old. We're talking the Windows XP and Pentium 4 era. I would be very surprised if it works well on a modern OS/computer!

Kudos for Magix for still offering support (AKA license management / downloads) for such old programs. Makes me want to dig out all my old Vegas CDs and register them for the heck of it!

Did you try to right click on the Vegas Icon and select "troubleshoot compatibility"?

Out of curiousity I decided to run the Vegas 5.0d installer on this Win 11 machine. The first thing the installer indicated is:

Unfortunately, the "Yes" option takes you to Sony Creative Software - Downloads - Home which has nothing about .NET 1.1 on it. Further searching lead to this link:

This says that .NET 1.1 will not work on windows 10 or 11. You can turn on 2.0 as indicated above and *maybe* it will work - I didn't try it. So it will not run in newer versions of Windows - Microsoft's "solution" is to have the creator of the program update it to Windows 3.5. In short - it's too old.

Version 6.0d also requires .NET 1.1. Version 7.0d will install with no .NET error messages. However, upon completion of the install, it did want to download .NET3.5 which includes .NET2.0 - so I let it just to see what happens (this is on the older Windows 10 machine). Version 7 did register correctly and did start fine but wouldn't read any of my current video files.

It short, it looks like it might be time to move forward about 18 years and upgrade to version 20.

@jetdv Yes, that's exactly the same process I went through with the identical result. And I think you are correct - so far, I can see no way to get it to work. I am trying the trial version of Vegas 20 and the good news is it seems to read all of my old projects and files. So that's great! Thanks again for your help.

More testing... With the .NET 2 (3.5) installed from the Vegas 7 install test on Win 10, I did a right-click on:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Sony Setup\Vegas 5.0\vegas5_enu.msi

And chose the "Troubleshoot Compatibility" option. After it ran, it popped up an option to "Skip version check". I selected that and then clicked on "Test the program..." and the installer ran!

Running Vegas 5, the registration worked correctly and it did open up!

Naturally, it also won't work with the current file formats I'm using today. It does work with the few DV-AVI files I have left on my system but won't open any current files. And in trying to open an MPEG file it should open, the "activation" process for the codec did not complete.

So, while you *might* get it to run, it will still be very lacking - especially by today's standards.

The next thing I need to figure out is why it doesn't recognize my serial number!! It's letting me use the program but says I need to register within 29 days. Not sure why it won't accept my serial number.

It accepted mine. You might need to make sure you're using the correct/matching e-mail address. You could log into your account at Magix and verify it has your serial number listed. Otherwise, you might need to ask Magix for assistance to make sure it is in the correct account.

p.s. I'd still upgrade to VEGAS Pro 20 - so many more codecs and features available to you there...

@jetdv I may end up doing that - upgrading to Pro 20. Meanwhile, 5.0 still won't accept my serial number! It says it's not in the database. I'm not sure why it won't accept it. When I open Vegas it says I have 21 days left to "activate" it. Will it just stop working then? Thanks again.

That suggests that the registration data did not transfer from Sony to MAGIX in 2016. It may be that your recent attempt to activate VP 5 on your new computer is now in trial mode which means that it possibly will cease to work after that trial period has ended - or have a watermark added. As jetdv suggested, you might need to contact MAGIX for assistance. Try infoservice@magix.net

Whether a Pentium 4 / XP era program like VP5 will function properly on a 2020's computer is another matter. If you've upgraded your computer after nearly 20 years, why not upgrade your software at the same time. Your VP5 serial number may enable you to get upgrade pricing but, if MAGIX's system doesn't recognise that SN, it may not either for upgrade pricing. Again, contact MAGIX for assistance.

Did you have a chance to try this to find your old S/N? But if you do have that try what Dexcon suggest, contact infoservice@magix.net or maybe Online Live Chat, advice here.

@vkmast yes, thank you! It still has my number listed there but when I copy and paste that it into my Vegas... and try to register online, it says the serial number is not in the database. It's a shame because aside from that it's working perfectly.
