I can understand that. Maybe something like ffmpeg, handbrake, MediaER Tool Kit, or Happy Otter Scripts will help.

Eagle Six - sorry, I do not know what those are or how to use those them.

Provide information in C.

Eagle Six wrote on 5/12/2019, 5:07 PM

Vegas will not open all flavors of MXF, if you have one that is not supported, you will need to transcode/convert it to something Vegas likes, such as h264 in a mp4 wrapper. If you provide the information that @john_dennis request, members can help you from there.

Right. The supported MXF codecs are XDCAM (HD) and XAVC.

arthur1 wrote on 5/12/2019, 5:35 PM

the thing I don't understand is that I have been editing MXF files from this client for the past 6 months and all of a sudden I can't bring them into Vegas. I assume they come from the same camera source.

Marco. wrote on 5/12/2019, 5:45 PM

Which video codec is used in the MXF files that does not work in Vegas Pro now?

Eagle Six wrote on 5/12/2019, 5:49 PM

Can you open some of the older MXF files from that client?

Sorry, Marco... I don't know what you mean

arthur1 wrote on 5/12/2019, 6:06 PM

Marco, how do I find out that answer

See this FAQ.

Eagle Six, are the programs you mentioned at the top (ffmpeg - media ER tool kit, etc ) ones that would convert my MXF files to a different format?

Eagle Six wrote on 5/12/2019, 6:38 PM

Yes, No, they should, maybe! I don't know what you have. As @Marco. suggest, download the Mediainfo app and post the MXF specs so members can possibly help. And/or download the free MediaER Tool Kit and try it. MediaER is probably the easiest to use.

Eagle six - yes - I was able to use mediaER to convert the MXF file to MP4, and started to edit when I noticed that below my preview window I have lost the ability of going to the beginning of the timeline or the end .. there is only the feature of "play - pause - stop", and an icon to use the features(beginning of the timeline or the end) I am used to.

vkmast wrote on 5/12/2019, 7:24 PM

Click that "hamburger" button/icon and from the opening menu choose Edit Visible Button Set...

arthur1 wrote on 5/12/2019, 7:34 PM

vkmast - this is so frustrating, and you guys are so patient - I have the urge to tell you I am a great video shooter, and editor, I just don't pay attention to the tech part ...... silly hey!!

Thank you vkmast ..... now I'm going to bed, and when I wake in the morning I will find that this has all been a bad dream .... now I have 50 or so MXF files to convert, and so I will try to find out why this has happened.

Good night to you all, and thank you from the bottom of my heart (hmmm is that too mushy)

Marco. wrote on 5/12/2019, 7:43 PM

And now to the techy part of it – found out which video codec is in the MXF wrapper?

Grazie wrote on 5/12/2019, 11:45 PM

@arthur1 Well I’ve just woken up, and would dearly like to know how you’ve got on.

You know, when something like this happens, “It’s worked before.....”, I/we can jump to the decision that VP is the weak link when in actual fact there’s been an external variable; not the same Camera; that camera has had an upgrade or the shooter decided to change frame rates. Do do @Marco.‘s suggestion: MediaInfo on MXF that work against MediaInfo on MXF that DON’T work and bring the results here. There’s plenty of chums eager to sift through the Techie stuff for you.

And too “mushy”? Err, no. Praise, when it’s genuine, like yours is always welcomed.

Grazie - sorry to take so long to reply ..... I was not up on the name of the different windows in Vegas, and so in the end what I really wanted was to see the window with my clips in it that were for my timeline. and the button I wanted was the "import media" one. I deleted that by accident. The second problem was not being able to read the MXF file, that my client said came from the same camera I had been editing with all along ...... of course he lied. that devil, it was a different camera, so I finally found out ...... and thanks to Eagle Six, I was able to convert the MXF files to MP4. Thanks to everyone who took their time to help me ..... wish I could repay that kindness.

Thank You @arthur1 and yes, in the future you can pay it forward, that's what we all do. We all started at ground zero knowing absolutely zero, and others helped us. Welcome to the club.

@arthur1 - Could you run both, good and bad, MXF files through MediaInfo so we can see for ourselves just how little or great difference you’ve had to hassle?

arthur1 wrote on 5/18/2019, 10:17 AM

Eagle Six ...... hahahahaha now all I have to do is remember how I got to this forum....... :-)

arthur1 wrote on 5/18/2019, 10:20 AM

Grazie ..... yes, I will try to do that, but it may take me a few days, as, on top of everything else, (as if this was a minor thing), my wife had surgery that has not gone well last week, although there does seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel...... I only hope it is not a train ... :-(
