How can I start Movie Studio 17.0 without Bezier Masking active?

Quin-Child wrote on 11/15/2021, 9:23 PM

When ever I first launch Movie Studio, the tracks have Bezier Masking activated. I never use that and don't want it. I have to un tick the box or delete the preset but it will always come back when I start the program again. It even remained after a re-install. And it remains after program resets. How do I get rid of that?

Test....

Click on the FX removal icon to get rid of it and hopefully it should stay away. You must have added it to the track at some time.

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 4:03 PM

I wish it was that simple. It ALWAYS comes back when I start the program. I did as you said just now. I saved before I quit. Then restarted... IT WAS BACK...!

EricLNZ wrote on 11/16/2021, 4:36 PM

Bizarre! Try deleting the track, then insert a blank new one.

vkmast wrote on 11/16/2021, 5:04 PM

Or reset software to default settings. Follow the instructions exactly.

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 5:15 PM

I delete the picture in picture track almost every time I use Movie Studio. But to check for sure, I just now deleted both the video track and the picture in picture track and put them both back in fresh. Bezier Masking came back active in both tracks. Also if I delete the track and then close and open the program it will be there.

This has been a real nuisance for me because if I'm not paying attention it will ruin my video. You might see from one of my previous posts all the trouble this caused me.

This issue always occurs in both tracks, P&P and Video. I really hope I find an answer. My work around is to always remember that when the program starts it is messed up and I can delete or deactivate the Bezier Masking before I do any useful work.

And also I know the procedure to reset the program. It does not help. And a full uninstall and re-install does not fix it. And yes, this is too weird. But I have a reasonable understanding of the program and computers and I am quite sure I am being accurate of my reporting of the issue.

I sure hope someone has an idea to try. Thanks for the suggestions so far. If needed I might be able to produce video of the track as I delete it and replace it. I'm sure out of ideas...

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 5:24 PM

OK...

Specifically to vkmast....

I followed your instructions exactly.... I have done this before, and I did it again just now... And I DID tick the box for the default settings. The program comes back in the original state, with the help screens etc. But Bezier Masking is still active when the program starts...!

If you would like I will make a 30 second video clip of this and share it as a link.

vkmast wrote on 11/16/2021, 5:30 PM

You can do that. It's night-time here now, so I probably see it tomorrow earliest, but maybe someone will find the solution in the meantime.

Here is a link to a video I made of me resetting the computer and demonstrating what is happening.

It is an iCloud link so it will expire some time in the future. So sorry for future people that might be looking at this.

Thanks to all that can help...!

What is your setting in Options > Preferences > General, "Automatically open last project on startup"? (Just to rule something out. And you saved what before you quit?)

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 6:16 PM

It was set to "Automatically open last project on startup" but just to be sure the problem was not from that I unselected that option and then unchecked Bezier Masking and then saved and quit the program. On next startup my old friend, "Bezier Masking" option was active. 😒

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 6:19 PM

I just save the video as though there was a video file. A VF file. Yes, I know that is not relevant. but it seemd prudent to do that in case it saves something related to the issue. The problem persists weather I save or not.

vkmast wrote on 11/16/2021, 6:37 PM

Sorry, I can't repro your problem. Hopefully someone will be able to help.

EricLNZ wrote on 11/16/2021, 7:40 PM

@Quin-Child Watched your video thanks. You have a unique, never heard of before, problem!

Question - are you using "Power User" mode. I'm always in it so forget there's the option. Bottom right in the opening screen gives you the option "Always start as power user".

From VMS's top menu bar try View/Window Layouts/ Default Layout and see what you get. If the Bezier FX still appears then your default has somehow got stuffed up.

Quin-Child wrote on 11/16/2021, 8:14 PM

I normally use "Power User" mode. But after I reset the program it is not in Power User mode. Both ways still present the issue. Just now I followed your suggestion for View/Window Layouts/ Default Layout. The problem persists. I also tried "save layout" from that same menu. The problem persists.

I have about the same issue in VMS16P. My version is PIP on main and on text tracks.

I reset few times in the past, it holds for awhile only to come back.

So I have this habit of removing them until I insert a new track.

vkmast wrote on 11/17/2021, 3:38 AM

@Quin-Child which version of Windows, 7 / 8 / 10 / 11? Which build of VMSP 17 (See Help > About > General)?

Btw, oddly, "reset to factory" did not work for you here either to correct your previous issue.

FayFen wrote on 11/17/2021, 4:10 AM

After investigating it deeply, I might found the culprit.

It's the file TrkVfxDefaults.prefs .

Close VMS, locate it on your C drive and rename it to TrkVfxDefaults.BADprefs

And re run VMS.

** I did not reset VMS, just made that change and I'm back on tracks...

***I'll continue to monitor that folder, should the file reapers and makes troubles.

EricLNZ wrote on 11/17/2021, 5:32 AM

locate it on your C drive

@FayFen Give us a clue please as to where you found it. Windows cannot find it. I have both VMS16 and 17 installed.

Eric, but you do not have the problem as well.

If it will ever pops the file will be among VMS temp files.

**It can be deleted not just renamed.

I searched my computer for TrkVfxDefaults.prefs

Not found as far as I can tell... I'm not sure my search method would be correct to find the file. All I did was put the file name into the windows 10 search box. Would that look in the right place?

No, it depends how you configure search in your system.

check that folder.

Quin-Child wrote on 11/17/2021, 1:29 PM

I looked for the file and followed the file path to "local/Movie Studio Platinum/17.0 but in that folder all is see is thumbnails. I think I have all the "file view" controls on for windows 10. Here is a screen shot of what I see. I don't look for files like this every day so maybe I am overlooking something.

FayFen wrote on 11/17/2021, 1:37 PM

I don't know what to say, maybe VMS17 is different in way it caches.

Regarding search, try to use this utility

https://www.voidtools.com/

if you don't know how to mange that in W10.

But I do think that the solution is that file.
